There are lots of other pubs that are closing who dont do live
music and dont have the costs you stated.#
I think you will find it is the recession and cheap booze from the supermarkets etc that is causing most problems for pubs.

Also "Reduce your fees, give the pubs a chance"

How about reduce the prices of ale in certain expensive pubs? £3 a pint is a joke, no wonder they're half empty when bands are on..

In your example, musicians are like the footballers, the fans are the spectators. So, if a club or stadium had to shut down, would the football players play for a lower wage or none at all?? Doubt it.
If you work, you should be rewarded. The more work you put in, the better you become, the more pubs you fill - the money should reflect that. A band starting out should expect lower rates, than a seasoned, experienced quality professional.

P.S. The smoking ban and as others have said, price of alcohol, tax by government and pressure from breweries, these are the things that are causing the pubs to shut, not the musicians.

Dalek, out of curiousity, have you ever played in a band?
cos if you have, then you would know how much effort, time and expensive it is to run one, have the transport, afford the equipment, etc

The pub industry is suffering because of 'brewery' monopolies forcing the pubs to sign contracts with them charging them astronomical rates for their beer. Cover bands are actually helping the industry, as they draw punters into the pubs to pay prices that they couldn't otherwise justify.

Blaming bands that charge fees for the world's ills is becoming a little tiresome. If pubs can't afford bands, they won't hire them, it's as simple as that.

@dalic loves garlic, I seem to remember you mentioning in the past that you have done one or two open mic nights,so why dont you help some of the struggling pubs out like some of the bands on here have in the past, and do some free gig nights for them, I assume that when you did your open mic nights that it was all your own material and not covers ?.some of the struggling venues would appreciate it especially when you were doing all your own material, infact I`ll bet a few people off this site would even support you by going to watch you !!!.

to be honest this is a valid point, if a little delivered wrong.
I agree if we dropped our prices that woulds help, how many of us really need the £20 we get for doing a gig, we spend most of it in that place anyway!! so most venues get the money back, true??
Imagine this, bands get together with breweries and the government, make them charge the same price for a pint of draft as they do for a can, they cant blame overheads, with deliveries, cost of pasturiser for the cans plus the cans themselves.
Its common sence Mr Garlic, we go to get people in the pubs, people go to listen to us for a good night out, (hopefully) and then to get ripped off with over priced beer.
I dont see how bands are the problem, maybe your Mr Brown looking for a scape goat???

Plus I'd say the average band fee is more like £200...which equates to £1600 per month..... 8 bands with 4 members of each band (not including friends/wives etc) spend say a minimum of a tenner each...that's £320 sales.
AND
If bands venues are having bands on TWICE a week (according to this hypothesis) then the management must think its worth it...there aren't many pubs that actually drop live music as a cost cutting exercise...but there are a lot of badly run pubs that start getting live music on as a last resort to save the pub!!
And, as has been pointed out, there are a LOT more pubs closing that don't have entertainment on than do.
I think if Mr Darlek is so concerned, he should write and complain to the local councils re business rates, the pubco's re rents and the government re smoking ban and the economy in general...and the bankers who seem to be syphoning money out of the economy at an extortionate rate!

Dalek, I love my job but I certainly would not do it for nothing or less pay. It is not the Bands who are causing the Pubs to close it is the large Supermarkets selling cheap Beer and pushing the Pubs out of business. There are lots of Pubs who do not have bands on, that are empty most nights so whose fault is that? I think it is you who has Blinkers on!

most cover bands are playing for the same money as 10 years ago, so in relative terms we are infact playing for less. A tenner 10 years ago was worth alot more than it is today!

Most cover bands would disband if they were forced to play for free. Fact! Maybe I'm selfish but I wouldn't travel round the North West & play a 2/3 hour gig for free. Dya think I'm stupid.

Most originals bands are just playin ac/dc, nirvana or killers re-writes. Good uns are few and far between. Covers bands wouldn't get booked if the punters didn't want em. Ask the venues

I run venues, I work with Bands (Originals and Covers) they work with me. We ALL get along very well.

Do you honestly think a venue that's used to paying covers bands (which is what the vast majority of people want to listen to at these places) would actually pay the same rate for some original band they've never heard of? It would be a managerial disaster.

Original bands usually play at designated places where even cover bands wouldn't dare touch.. It's the name of the game..

As for getting paid.. I've been in a few original bands many many years ago and I never got paid for a single gig.. You know why? Because I wanted to get famous and spread the music around.. A gig was a gig then.. Now it's different.

Maybe it's time that you got your own band together and move away from this forum to an original bands forum.. Mind you, you'll probably piss all them off as well...

Just by way of interest, how old is Mr Garlick? He seems to be old enough to wind every body on here, up a treat. Maybe he's a young guy who cant appreciate the cost of actually being in a band. Personally speaking it costs me a pair of drum sticks each gig we do, sometimes more, busted Zildjians dont repair 'em selves Diesel for the van doesn't grow on trees, and insurance.... The point dalek is missing, is that cover bands and originals bands aren't simply split into good and evil camps. The overall aim of being in an original band is to make money, and the end of the day. Bands play for free now, to hope to get the exposure so that one day they'll get paid enough to make a living out of it.

Cover bands aren't earning enough to make a living, and £250 is absolutely sod all for an evening's worth of entertainment, sound, lighting and transport. If you gig often enough, you can make a decent bit of pocket money, but really the deal pubs are getting is a good one in my opinion.

If you really want to level your frustration at musicians in a time of recession, why not complain about having to pay £50 to see Bon Jovi, and then pay £4 a pint in the arena? Surely that's alot more morally repugnant than wanting £50 for a night's hard work, whether it's music-related or not.

It's simple economics. Supply and demand.

Originals bands need venues to play at and get heard so they can get famous and collect the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Other venues need covers bands to provide entertainment for the weekly trade.

If what Dalek is saying is true, then the reverse would also apply. When the pubs are packed and making good money, the bands should be paid extra. I can't see that happening.

The decline of pubs is nothing to do with the price of entertainment. If a pub is not making enough money then they shouldn't be booking bands. It's all about the socio-economic factors - general recession, above inflation rises in price of beer, cheap supermarket beer, no-smoking in pubs and a general apathy of our generation for a night out down the pub when a night out on the town - cinema, gig, nightclub etc can cost roughly the same.

Dalek's argument is ultimately flawed and given his post history regarding originals and covers bands, he sounds like a broken record.

I'm sure most of us have been at venues where you are supported by Originals Bands. We certainly have and one thing sticks in my mind is:
"OK to use your PA? Can I borrow (insert a number of different items here). Can we use half of your Drum Kit
We have worked with some really good OB's but one thing that is ALMOST consistent is that they do not have anywhere the investment that Covers Bands do when they are starting out. That will come when they hit the Big Time I guess!!!!!!
There is a new Originals Band just registered and introduced themselves on NWB and they aren't doing it for nowt......Cause they said so....

I am trying (very Damn Hard) to put original bands on at one of my venues on Friday nights (good prime time and in a prime location) and although they will play for Drinks riders/expenses (which can amount to a quite a few quid) they also ask that I provide PA plus Backline plus Drum Kit. It means that at the end of the night I could have got a covers band in at the same price. So please don't tell me their is a difference between Covers and Originals when its all costed out. The only real difference for me is that its a lot less like work getting a covers band in.

Can you get me three different bands every Friday night for the next 3 months to do Fridays for me (Not Metal tho). The Venue is in Sheffield city centre. 9PM till 11:30PM. Only stipulation is they cost nowt and they provide their own PA/Backline/Drums etc, I will be more than happy to give them gigs. If it works I will gladly have them back again on regular basis. Now I cannot be fairer than that can I?
This is not a wind up but a genuine offerat a genuine venue from a genuine venue booking company.

The pay off for originals bands is the get known and recognised, thats the value in it for them, they arent doing it for 'nothing' because they get 'something'...a raised profile.

Q. Why do pubs hire entertainers?
A. To try and bring people in to spend money over their bar.
Q. Why do entertainers who play their own original material do so for little or no money?
A. So they can raise their profile and hopefully make more money in the future, by selling their incredibly original stuff to people who have money to spend on it.

We have done gigs for nothing, for the local hospice in Oldham, for the British legion in Bolton, for the Kids affected by the Chernobyl nuclear plant explosion… (not in Chernobyl I must add) and we were very honoured to have been asked to do so, that was our payment, get me?

But honestly Its not all about making money… I am lucky if I can say I have cleared £20 quid after a gig, and then I’ll spend that on the bloody kids…usually to buy some obscure original music :o

Covers bands are basically a live disco, DJs charge on average the same if not more than most covers bands, the pubs that pitch the right bands to the right crowd are busy, Pubs are under no obligation to put covers bands on, its up to landlords to pitch the right entertainment for the crowd in that pub. be it kareoke, covers bands or open the box etc. a lot of people on here have been playing 20 - 30 years and spend £1000s on gear, its a little whimiscal to presume the will perform for free, thats not to say we wont under certain conditions eg the recent 45 charity do where everyone gave up their bank holiday Monday to perform for free as well as assist in providing sound and support etc, so much for greedy covers bands.

hehe psml here, from a venues perspective wouldn't it be great to get a live band for £50 - jeez I'd av em on 7 nights a week!!!! Would I ever expect that, erm no. Most bands do reduce their rate, especially in the current difficult trading times - unlike the dj/karaoke guys who are getting around £100 themselves for pressing buttons on a computer (jeez that must have taken a while to train for eh)! But hey, thats entertainment for ya, and if its what customers want then so be it. Personally, I rather pay the extra £100 and listen to a live band and it does anger me that the guys doing Karaoke etc get paid so much when you have a band with anything from 3-9 people in it getting a fee to split between them when there is NO comparison into the work involved, training, setting up equipment etc........

Are bands a factor in pubs closing down, absoloutley no way. If anything its the pubs that do not provide any entertainment that are worse affected. In the current state of the market, people need a reason to come out and gone are the days that having a drink was sufficient enough. Smoking ban, supermarket prices, rising costs of utilities, rent, business rates (ours has just doubled for some strange reason) etc etc etc are all factors having a major affect, let alone the fact that people do not seem to have the 'spare' cash that they used to. No-one else (i.e. utilities, rates etc) reduces their prices, so why should we expect bands to?

There is a major drive on at the mo which has been ongoing for some years - the affect of alcohol to the public and how it is affecting NHS costs - for some reason pubs are getting the blame for this even although most pub drinkers drink sensibly and less than house drinkers or the ones on the street corners with their white lightening.......due to this, further legislations have been put in place which have affected pubs to a certain extent - but the biggest thing affecting pubs is the fact that neither the government or local authourites want pubs to exsist, therefore are doing nothing to help us and indeed are happy to see closure of most. The drive in Blackpool is that no pub will operate that does not sell food - customers will come in, have a meal and hopefully only 2 drinks then go home and all our problems are solved - yeah right!!!!!

If bands were a factor then this could easily be solved but unfortunately its the big wigs causing all the damage as usual....

Gona try get down tomorrow to see Northern Riot (they are gona go down a storm at the Eddy) but I'm having to change rota at last minute as we are going to view another pub 2mrw (that is closed at mo) so might have to do a few hours mesel at night. Then again, it's only Karaoke on so I might not be needed lol, will play it by ear and hope to get down at some point though.

I gave John and the lads from riot a gig a while back, but it was so quite that I felt I had to make it up to them, and what do they do? Threaten to crank it up BIG TIME LOL. I for one am well up for a good night of Rock.

DLG' if as I recall you ran a 1000 seater venue in Portland why don't you do the same here and just have originals on there. Surely it's a moneyspinner waiting to happen?

Actually John, he did, but it was removed almost as quickly as it was put up. From what I can remember, he said it was Locals Only, but when I googled it, it was an independant radio station/label. I didn't see a venue, though.

Told you all (well not you lot) years ago that it won't stop with persecuting smokers .. alcohol next! How much of our tax money goes towards the govt/NHS stop smoking packs/counsellors/groups ...

Mr D says original bands do it for nothing ... well this last few years I have been to quite a few original band gigs and most of them I've had to pay to get in ... I'm assuming (although I may be wrong) that my money somehow finds its way to the the artists concerned, you know The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Andy Fairweather Low (although he played mostly covers!!, how dare he!!)

Mr D I can understand your concern for our licensed premises, but your theory that paying bands are to blame for their closure is as wide of the mark as your mind is narrow on this subject.

Jackie hunny this goes back to late last year where a " debate" was started by DLG. He just hates cover bands and says this every chance he gets. That's his choice.

I did ask him on an earlier blog to come down to the Banner and meet some of the bands and NWB folk at The Charity do, but he declined as he was visiting family over Xmas, presumably in Portland (Not sure if thats Oregon or Dorset tho).

All I gotta say to D is you go on about knowing plenty of bands that play for free .... But can you name them?? And I am sure if you have ever played in a band and gives for a year you would want paying and would value and understand all the hard work guys in bands put in !

No band should work for free, be it covers or originals, and the only reason some originals do it for free is that they have to, cos the venue won't pay them cos they aren't well known and can't guarantee a turn out. The only reason they might do a free gig is to expand their fanbase and to gain kudo's from playing there. The next time they play, they might get paid.
If an originals band never asks for money for every gig they do, then they will soon quit the band due to debt - they won;t be able to afford it. Cos money, my friend, makes the world go round, except Darlek doesn't want to admit it. And without money, you're gonna end up screwed.
We are all selfish and greedy cos if we weren't, we'd be homeless, living in a box by the canal.

from where i live to rochdale is around three miles-on that stretch five years ago, there must have been at least eighteen pubs.with one exception (spring mill tavern), none of them had "live music", by way of bands (covers OR originals)-more than half of those are now closed.

I didn't see signs of a venue, though, and their sight is full of Paypal/Visa/mastercard banners saying click here to go to checkout (ie pay!). So it would seem that they don't practice what he is preaching.

Well let's just call this another chance to prove that Dalek has the qualification he says he has. I have access to over 100 relatives and a forum of over 300 people in the US. Most of the forumites are giggers. What an easy way to prove that Dalek is in fact genuine.

I suspect, however, the response I'm likely to get will be "I don't have to prove myself to anyone". Which is the usual Trollese for " I got nothing".

@Willow lol, yeah just a shame people take it personally and get so down abt it...that's life and it aint perfect and neva willow be. It kinda gets a bit boring reading the same stories over and over again and I think we've all just got too much time on our hands lol.

I think it would be unfair to expect bands to play for free or £50 - we're all in the same boat at the end of the day and have bills to pay, cars to run etc etc, and most of the bands that I've came across do loads to support venues and will reduce their fees etc as best they can....I really don't think it matters who this guy is or what he has to say, it's about being happy about what you are doing yourself....free comedian....yeah you do it all the time anyway lol - just a wee twist here and there puts the humour back in lol.

Say what you like about Dalek, but I do believe he is the creator of at least three 100+ comment blogs which have encouraged debate about originals/covers bands and venues in the last few months. And he tolerated stupid threats, didn't report the offenders and STILL came back and stuck to his guns. I may not agree with him, but I sure do respect the little bugger!

Much better than reading some of the "mutual felatio" that seems to dominate the blogs these days. This whole place is full of "internet warriors" who have nothing better to do or say. There, I said it. Now run off into your little cliques and discuss.
