advice needed please

All drum stools are basicly uncomfortable but if you have a serious back problem it can make it 10 times worse,
I have been asked to post this blog to see if anyone knows if there is a stool out there with back rest support, and if so where you can get one / price etc etc

Cheers

Have a look at the Tama HT741 Ergo-Rider Throne. Has a good backrest as well. Okay not a cheap solution worth a look.

Eeeeer Trig? Shazza?

To be honest you only need a round stool. It's all about drum stool height and posture you see.

http://www.sportsrehab.com/drumminghealth.htm

Couple of pics demonstrating the incorrect 'Phil collins' slouch...and the 'Thighs perpendicular to the floor', shoulders back, chest out, chin slightly raised posture.

For years I used a bog standard stool the only problems I got - in the last 5 years or so - was a numb backside (thicker seat helps) r cramp in the left leg. The only problems back wise were sciatica / and lower lumbar region were direct result of the weight of the damn hardware bag and the ridiculous routes you have to take with it to get to a 'stage' or rehearsal room...

Got to agree with drum bloke. It's all about the posture. A stool with a back rest will not stop you from slouching, it will only stop you from leaning back too far. You could try the "motorcycle" style seat rather than the round top. That will help you position your arse further back on the stool which is generally a good start. Good posture will come with discipline over time.

I'm 34 and I still slouch.

Pretty much what Drum Bloke said regarding posture, a throne with a backrest isn't essential...just down to how much you wanna spend.

Whilst I'd always reccommend my beloved TAMA for most hardware I definitely reccommend a Roc n Soc throne. You can buy with or without the backrest but as Shine says, before you order anything go & try a few out at the drum center Eccles.

Good Luck.

Easy peasy - just copy the link in the address bar at the top and paste in here. Same with photos / Youtube vids.

Nod from me for a visit to Eccles (Mcr drum centre)

I have used them on and off over the years (decades!!) they are ALWAYS helpful. Not many music shops in Manchester now where you get a level of service and a very well stocked shop...

Yamaha DS 950 . Its a sq seat, and I find it superb. As others have said, a back rest will only stop you leaning back, wont help while playing. It may give you some respite between songs. The 950 can have a back rest fitted.
Again this isn't a cheap option, but my arse feels so much better :)

a drummer needs a penis to counterbalance and compensate for the back arching forward!

@ Bass Bloke:

If it's a recurring injury then Anne would benefit long term thru healing and prevention. Massage, stretching and exercise are better. You could use supports and back rests but your just masking it and drumming won't help, in fact can make it very much worse and irrepairable.

Get to a Sports physio/masseuse. (I know a very good one in Mcr!..behave you lot! Not the dodgy 'extra's' type)
They'll assess and pinpoint the problem and advise on stretching and exercise to remedy. It's not that exspensive and can get rid of the problem completely.

There you go and try telling anyone that drumming isn't just about hitting things and they won't believe yer..

roc n soc do a cracking drum stool with back rest but they are not cheap but they are drumming luxury!!! if its a recent injury it should clear up wit a couple of deep tissue massages. hope this helps here is a link so you can look at the picture. craig. x

I've had similar problems, and the answer isn't particularly cheap.
Tama Ergo is not a bad place to start, but Roc'n'Soc are better ( I have one with a back rest) You can buy just the seat and backrest seperately if you have a compatible stool base.
The ultimate, however, is Soundseat, and they do have UK distribution. I know of several top pro drummers using one of these, and they all sing its praises. This is the link to the UK site:
http://www.5351.co.uk/seats.html
and, yes, I'm in the market for one. They also make guitarist's seats, too.

@ dakota-bass bloke-hey trig-just been talking to freya-(who's 60 now, still does karate-2nd dan)-all the comments on here are really good advice-only thing is-as freya points out-anne is built slightly differently to us guys (are you reading this, G???).-reckons a "woman centred" physio first call, ask about excercises to strengthen various bits and pieces, perhaps suitable clothing-otherwise may cause problems in later life? ;-)

I havent read all the replies but i changed from a std round to the shaped item, but one thing i keep saying im going to do is fit a flat roller bearing into the seat so it can swivel on the post as i refer a bit of movement of the seat when im moving rather than swiveling my spinal chord.
