Should musicians retire at an age when it becomes embarrasing

No nastiness people genuine question

I am 31 now and have had a year out of WHATEVER to recharge my batteries for myself and family.

I personally cannot see myself lugging my gear around especially those stairs at Marigolds into my 60's.

Do you think there should be an age when it becomes embarrasing to watch old people playing instruments and for health reasons they should stop playing. I know I stay well clear when I see old codgers playing in a band as it will be the same old crap they play.
I saw the bumper blues band at the Market Tavern and they were exceptional probably one of the best pub bands I have ever seen but they are the exception . I suppose its being abit of a hyporcrite but I think it could become in this day and age a concern for a venue to get insurance due to age concerns.

Before anyone starts it was a thought I had today so I post a blog.

cheers guys

Your never to Old to Rock N Roll !!
What is Old anyways?
Keef Richards,Ronnie Wood,Mick Jagger old or Jeff Beck,Peter Green, Carlos Santana too old?

If you still have the desire and the health to do it GET OUT THERE and ROCK till ya DROP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too old is when you question why your doing it or how much longer you want to be playing, Once the passion is gone its time for the pipe and slippers.

Your as old as you feel.
And you could always drag your grand kids along to lug the equipment as you get older, that way you'll always know there's someone in the audience that appreciates what your doing :) win win !!

True but some just cant cut it anymore. look at Paul Mccartney his voice went about 1992 and dont get me started on that hair dye!! just the claim culture we have is something I think pubs would bring in. anything for abit of cash or upset the chavs they ll do it!!!

Errr Paul Rogers (Born 1949),Just as good as he has always been.
Never was a McCartney fan after Wings, But he still gets out (can't be need of the gig money) so he must still have that passion that we all have (or should Have)
Nowt wrong with Hair dye either. Least he's still got hair LOL

I just watched Paul McCartney's Good Evening New York live DVD - his band, his bass playing & singing were all excellent - I was suprised by how good he was

I think if you're a born musician, you CAN'T stop, even if you think ought to... I'm never gonna stop playing

in the eyes of some, i'm too old to play in an 'indie' band really, but I'm not stopping playing music... if you're born to do it, you don't stop till you die

Never too old....after watching Deep Purple last November, Ian Gillan and the gang still have it and they're older than me (just)
If you want to, and still can of course, rock till ya drop.

As far as too old to lug gear in and out of venues: Simple remedy. Invite your kids and their friends along, get them to 'roadie' for you. Establish a solid fanbase that will physically support you in exchange foe a few free beers. Prob solved.

Our singer/frontman Tony is 52 and fit as a butchers dog.
The rest of us are fat and fucked ha ha ha.....
After 2 'high energy' weekend shows it's thursday before I've recovered but I'm ready and willing to do it all again come Friday.
I think we need roadies.....
When I stop loving it I'll pack in.....regardless of my age.

The older I get the less serious I take myself. I have some nerve damage in my left side so have to be aware of what I play and when I can't play something. I've been in brass bands when I was younger and there are guys in their 80s still doing that.

Am I going to let someone tell me what age I should stop? FUCK no.

I wanna be still playing Helix, Rough Cutt and Van Halen tunes into my 80's, with my zimmer, false teeth, rickets and probably a big old piss bag strapped to my fender jazz. I want the crowd to have to help me up when i slide (or drop) to my knees. i want my daughter to think im quite cool for an old bugger even if she doesnt like the music. Shes 5 at the moment and thinks Twisted Sister are ace, but i cant warp her mind forever can i? Saw some old blues guy (i would say mid 70's) a few months ago near bacup in a grotty old dive and he rocked!!!! He didnt look arsed about anything. Plus when you are that age you can say anything and be classed as a character cant you? Who here wants to miss out on that opportunity with a microphone in front of you?

And thinking about it...I wouldn't let anyone under 25 get near a guitar or whatever and let em loose on a stage at a venue where people spend their hard earned money to be entertained..LOL
Oooh...what have I started now :o)

I'll still be playing/performing/dying when I'm older than my current 61 well used years. No intention of giving up playing although I'm sure there are a few people which I already had.

I have reached a point where I get fed up of lugging so much gear round and setting it all up. I often feel like retiring before it all becomes too undignified - then I look at our drummer and feel 10 years younger. He's a good few years older than me and is like The Ever Ready Bunny onstage.

I would never stop playing completely, it just depends how much playing I will want to do in a while - and where. There is always the option of taking less gigs and / or doing it in a bar overlooking a beach somewhere warm, like our former guitarist did.

My husband was a bass player and he packed up playing for more than 30 years, but he still liked messing about with acoustic guitars at home.

He was selling a guitar in loot when a guy phoned up asking a few questions about the guitar and said do you play in any bands now ?, he said no he was too old for that stuff now !, why dont you get in your box now then as you seem to think your already past it, your not dead yet !,Why don't you come and have a go with me I am a singer and I will get some other guys together for a jam. So he did and now hes got his own band. With 3 other guys who have pretty much done exactly the same thing.

one other thought for you h m-iffen you're still playing when you reach your forties/fifties the technology will have made the gear so much lighter and easier to carry-now- in my day.....bloody great wooden framed marshal stacks, steel framed vox amps, you catch my drift? :-D
hang in there young bro, you'll know when it's time to stop enjoying/playing your music-there isn't one!!!
the likes of rockin' ken and myself started counting backwards when we reached forty-works wonders!! now we're too young to die old!! :-D
i know several musos who are in their sixties-they can outlast the "young guns" in the same bands!!
and-the main question would be-embarrassing to who? –D

Funny thing age, because however old you are somebody younger than you think you are an old fart, for instance the blog was posted by a 31 year old and thats almost half way to retirement, funny thing is one of my daughters friends is in a band and the oldest in the band is a guy called Tom he`s just turned 20, and my daughter was mentioning this blog to him whilst talking on her mobile to him, and he said " I dont think I will still be playing when I reach 30".

As for me everything aches I have loads of health issues, I have spent most of my life thus far totally gutting houses knocking walls down putting bathroom suites and central heating in the 5 different houses I have lived in, and I`m fairly goosed, one of the only things I can still do is play a guitar (some would say terribly), and to them much younger people than me reading this blog, my body might be knackered but my brain isnt, and an absolute certainty is that the older you get the wiser you get, and funny as at may seem My memory seems to be far better than some of the younger guys that I have played with in bands.

I know what you mean about people looking older in bands, I went to see the eagles a couple of years ago and they did look a bit worse for wear however they sounded brilliant, and some us old farts still like the old rock stuff but they also like bands like foo fighters, stereophonics, snow patrol etc,so we play that as well as the older stuff, you have to remember we grew up listening to hendrix, deep purple etc.

Mind you in the past when you used to bump into old mates you had`nt seen for a while, the conversation used to go "what you been up to ?, been here been there been with this woman been with that woman", now its how`ve you been "well I`ve been in hospital with this been in hospital with that, do remember bill ?, oh yeah, well he`s dead".

There is one main difference between when we used to play music in the past and when we play music now, and that is because we can do it entirely for enjoyment, buying gear is easier because we have more money than when we were younger, and modern combos are much lighter than 2 marshall 4x12 cabs we used to carry round with us, and apart from that we have a roadie, we dont have to prove anything to anybody because we`ve done it so many times in the past, and lastly we still do it because we can.

@ off the rails- hear exactly what you say-don't play anymore, like to rock out though-get young 'un's saying-"do you always dance like that?" then someone will tell them how old i am-"no! you're never 58??-you don't look it?"-what i don't tell them is i damn well feel it the day after (and, sometimes the day after that)- wouldn't have it any other way, though-music was my first love-it will, i hope be there with me when i go. :-D

@viking to be fair I remember thinking believe this or not, when I was 25 "well I`ve done my bit in the music business its time for me to hang my guitar up and retire", and if it was`nt for a guy called John Kenny around 5 years ago(I was a bass player when I packed up but I always fancied playing lead again) I had a few brush up lead guitar lessons off John, and he said the magic words "your never too old to play". although I`d like to meet the guy who said life begins at fourty in a dark alley some where I`d hit him with my zimmer frame lol.

@grooverman, I spoke to John last night funny enough, Rubian are doing a party next month I think it was, and John is doing an acoustic night, I can find out more about that if your interested.

Rubian are not gigging anymore as such, the vocalist is doing his own thing, (John is a very good friend of mine), he has`nt had a very good past 18 months, however he is now involved with religion and he does`nt seem to have much spare time.

I think if the right band came along he might be interested, John is a really nice guy as you will already know, there is quite a few people on this site who know John and have played in various bands with him, Marc out of Vankwish, and Pete out of Sabre just to mention a couple.

@ off the rails-i tend to find that counting backwards from that particular "milestone" works extemely well-i'm now 22 by my reckoning-so can behave accordingly!! as i said in a previous blog-"growing old is compulsory-growing up is optional!!"lol!! :-D
