Whats going on with our pubs????

If there not closing down, there going up in smoke..........

After a fantastic week-end and feeling very positive about 2010, we drove down to the pub tonight and noticed that the Royal Oak have a sign up saying their main bar will be closed from Tues & it will only be opening the small back room. Although it didn't surprise us, it's still a sign of the times and a bit of a worry of whats going on around us. If that wasn't bad enough, we left the pub about 1.30am and noticed fire brigade etc at a pub even closer! As we've tried to drive down the prom to head home, we were diverted and could see the smoke belching out of The Dutton Arms. Strange thing is, we had been discussing this pub with the last customers to leave and they told us that all the staff had been paid off last week and there was only 2 people left managing/working the pub.............everyone else had been made redundant. Not that I'm one for making assumptions ofcourse. Sad/strange thing is, this pub is part of the Yates chain.........and all us folk from Blackpool and beyond know the devastation and destruction of the recent fire at Yates in town centre.............jeez a won't sleep tonight, think I'd better check my insurance policy!!!!!!! :(

safe in Athy!
fact is most pubs have a greater worth as a 'site' than a business.
Expect more 'mysterious' fires...clubs have been doing it for decades...every time a club needs refurbishing there's a 'mysterious' fire, caused by 'an electrical fault'.
Unless there's something really spooky going on in Blackpool...Keef, we need to know!

lol, went to see that one Alec and it has major damage inside and need thousands spent on it. Sad, as the brewery have turned all heating etc off and the latest weather has caused burst pipes etc. Can understand theres a cost issue but the place is just gona get more and more run down.....crackin big boozer tho....

Latest reports are hat a 29 yr old has been arrested for an arson attack on the pub.
It does seem to be part of an alarming trend in the area tho.

Just seen it on the news. Arson seems to be prevalent at the moment, and quite often pubs that are semi-closed seem to become targets. Often, people seem to think there are soft/easy pickings because of the lack of staff on site.
re: the Royal Oak. Are they closing the main bar where the bands are playing? This raelly sounds like the beginning of the end.

@Rob 1 out of five mate (The Heat). Err Thats this week tho, things may change (and they usually do) LOL

Did hear thro the grapevine that AC/BC have split but noticed a new name on this months Blackpool gig guide ACD, wonder if its part of AC/BC? Time will tell.

If AC/BC have split, that will mean all the others have too - apart from Billy No Mates, of course, unless he's fallen out with himself. If anyone's looking for a good drummer, though, Dennis would make an ideal candidate.

@Rob

I have it on V good authority (and only a hour or so ago) that AC/BC and The Three Shy Teds have gone their separate ways.
As a matter of interest Wasn't Dennis part of Shady from the 80's?
Oggi would know the answer to that one I guess.

Don't know why, but I'm really struggling with this one....after posting last night and doing a bit of housework etc, I thought I must try get some sleep but it was impossible. Although I felt really stupid, Wullie was the same (I think it might have something to do with seeing a strange guy larking around at the bus stop near the Halifax bank after the police diverted us?).

So after no sleep, we've decided to go to the pub and what a releif it was still intact. But when the 1st news report went out that the manager and her 11 year old kid was in the building and alerted the fire crew, it just sent shudders down my spine that have never left. What kind of cold hearted b**d cld do this? If the rumours are true (???) I just can not belive that someone could do this for such petty reasons. What is our world coming to and how much at risk are we? Ok, you might not have the perfect landlord or landlandy but ffs, does it warrant trying to take their life and the life of a child.....what is wrong with this person that they can go to such drastic levels - or am I worrying about nothing and the guy can plead guilty of arson but walk home 'scot free' as theirs not enough evidence against him as obviously there is more to it than the press/authorities cares to report. I might be glad that I did not give this guy a job, I might have totally disagreed with the way in which this pub was run but I hope and pray that if rumours are true this guy gets what he deserves and that the manager and her son can get on with their lives in the hope that this does not have a major affect on them.............sorry for the rant (they weren't even a music venue) but I am totally devastated by this.

Re the Royal Oak, our singer on a Monday day time, sings there on a Wednesday and today when I asked him if he was still ok for his gig he said yes, just that it would be in a smaller room as the crowds just aren't there - so fingers crossed this is not going to have any affect on bands booked. Perhaps they might even be opening the main room at weekends???? Who knows, they just haven't made that very clear and we've had several customers asking us what bands we have on - major shame as we have private parties both this wkend and next!

Apologies again for such a negative post.....

Oggi, our singer is going in to see the bloke at the Royal Oak tonight. We were supposed to be doing a cancellation gig for them this weekend. Apparently there's some confusion as his son has booked another band also.

Given the Royal Oaks reputation of late I'm translating this to be "a better offer has come up", but will hold judgement until later.
