If I can get my basic brain around this, we're talking great 2nd albums?

Again, I offer up Extreme: Pornografitti. The first album was good but you could tell where their roots were. Porno was Extreme with their sleeves rolled up.

2nd up Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny. After Rocka Rolla, this was a masterpiece.

Dream Theater didn't hit their (self-confessed) peak until 1999 with Scenes From A Memory.

second album better than the 1st:

Happy Mondays - Bummed
The Beatles - With The Beatles
New Order - Power Corruption and Lies
Joy Division - Closer
Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free
Lou Reed - Transformer
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation Of Millions...
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Radiohead - The Bends
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy

agree with Nevermind and Zep II too

most artist's 2nd albums are better than their 1st, I reckon

'Thriller' wasn't Jacko's 2nd album, i dont think
