Own up!!

Me: Level 42 and The Spin Doctors. That's pretty much all I listened to i my college days. Good job I expanded my horizons but the jazz funk has stood me in good stead as a drummer. I like to mix my rock steadiness with a bit of funky goodness lol

The reverse: I can't stand The Smiths or The Beatles and everyone thinks I'm wierd because of this. "How can you call yourself a musician and not like The Beatles?".... Oh get lost. They weren't THAT good. Get over it!

I have a lot of time for the Spin Doctors.

My list:

Bjork ( some genius surrounded by utter shit)
Disturbed
Evanescence (Dude, they're a pop band with heavy guitar!)
Die Krupps

I can see a debate forming. A real one, not barbed bullshit.

OK. My take on KISS.

Im not a FAN per se. I can, however, see the appeal. I like a few of the songs. The thing I like better is the spectacle.

It's about live shows. If I go to see a show I want my eyes to be entertained as well as my ears. I love a great number of bands/solo artists/orchestras etc and listen to them on my phone mp3 player regularly. There are some I wouldn't go and see because there is no visual stimulation though.

Spectacle and interaction are what I feed off in a gig environment. If there's nothing to see I may as well be at home listening to the CD.

I think KISS, and bands like them (Rammstein anyone?) have the opposite effect. They can make you like music that is possibly not the strongest because the spectacle is recreated in the listeners mind when the music is played.....? At least that's how it works for me.

How Neil Young made it I have no idea though. *runs away*

@bad horsie (mick) and there, for me, you have the crux of it. take away the trappings, and what's left, for me, is an average american "safety first" rock outfit-hence their mass appeal? no quibbles against the musicianship-my quibble is with the delivery.

Hate:
AC/DC (overplayed, over-rated & over-covered)
Oasis (for lack of originality and crass attitude)
Amy Winehouse (for obvious reasons)

Like:
Some techno/dance music
The Beatles for what they were when they were, and some of the great songs they created.
Take That (for one of the greatest comebacks ever)

I think that the approach to any band from an introductory stance is hugely subjective bro. I LOVE listening to music. Something I should also have quantified is that I will avoid going to see certain musicians or bands because I don't want the visual distraction. Not that I'm intolerant or anything. Ahem.

I always saw KISS as Paul Stanley/Gene Simmons Inc. The music was never going to be groundbreaking was it?

Ace Frehley: "So that's a Les Paul then?"
Music shop salesman: "Yes. Yes it is".
Ace Frehley: "Coooool. Where do teh bombz go?"

Again AC/DC have to be understood. I disliked them for 25 years because of their style of music, but over the last few years I've warmed to them. I wouldn't get the back catalog, but I can understand the simplistic Rock & Roll approach they always had.

I would be hard pressed to think of a band that go out and do "what we do" as well as AC/DC.

And I've come to think that Back in Black riff is one of the best of all time. Perfect for the intro scene to Iron Man.

@Socialtornado I'm loving the ACTUAL music discussions, but I'm perplexed as to why more people are not getting involved.

Discussions like this and the Quizes are great, but they disappear too quickly off "Page 1"
That's why i prefer the format of the Play Pen, or whatever it is now called. At least the popular topics are kept visible.

Right McFly, they are actually shit-hot musicians. They all have some sort of musical parentage and can play a really mean blues.
Never bought a Beatles record, when Please Please Me was No1, I bought Green Onions.
For spectacle got to be early Earth Wind and Fire or The Tubes.
Hate The Smiths, Oasis.

@bad horsie(mick) again, you hit it on head, bro -from an introductory stance it is, by definion subjective-and always should be-for, isn't music both an intellectual and emotional medium? -however-after years of intense adulation, especially by (certain) quarters of the media, i reckon closer inspection is warranted? and-after doing that...same conclusion-they're entertainers, not the hard rock band they (or their publicists-or both) convey themselves to be?. i do acknowlededge that i may always be in a minority holding that view re kiss. however-until i hear them play something to make me think again??
and-"ace frehley"???pmsl!!! :-)

I like The Carpenters... I know people don't usually HATE the Carpenters but I never hear other rockers say anything about em... LOVE Karen's voice

amongst rock types, I feel out of place expressing a liking of Steely Dan, 2Pac, Prince, Abba, but I don't think people tend to HATE em

oh yeah, I LOVE the Darkness... rock is inherently silly (ask Freddie, ask Mick, ask Iggy... they know that the magic formula is to look ridiculous while sounding fantastic), and it amazes me that rockers thought they were having the piss taken out of them by The Darkness... I always thought Justin was great

OK time to turn the love around.

I can't see the value in:

R.E.M.
Neil Young
Bob Dylan

I also strongly dislike anyone who tries to convey a political message in a song. We're not stupid. We can make our own minds up thanks. You have a record deal not a big "save the world" brain.

Are you reading this Bono?

Ok here goes

Love Level 42 = great musicians (Im a bassist and the drums and bass playing are incredible)
Kajagoogoo (Hearing you all cringe!) - great bass playing and Too shy is ace
Neil Diamond - Voice!
Billy Joel - What a songwriter.

Dont let the rest of the band see this!

Totally in synch with earlier comments regarding beatles - its good but is it that good ..... hendrix would have happened regardless of beatles they were good pop with little real competition.

Oasis - cannot see a valid reason for their rise to fame ... regurgitated from their record collections for me

Kiss - At xmas it was our drummers 40th (big kiss fan) so we went looking for some classy memorabilia - x records in bolton - selling pretty much anything with Kiss logos on it! You can buy a remote control american dragster with KISS all over it (Where is the relevance there). Some of their songs are rock staples and work, I dont hate em, just think it got overtaken by a "how much crap can we market on the back of this band" type of deal.

Thats my go over with!

Hmmmm.

Billy Joel...

I've been in first hand contact with a band that were a BJ tibute, but didn't play the hits. Pretentious bull. I have never met a more anal bunch of "musicians" in my life.

I had a conversation with the singer (best mates potential father in law at the time)
"THese songs are pretty good but you didn't play the songs the audience know."
"Well people don't know that he wrote music that was more involved than the singles. THis is a warm up gig. We're doing theatres after this".

Shelf life: 3 months. Aaaaand gone.

Ha ha ha, I always call U2 a "generic Irish rock band" and it infuriates people. Can you imagine that? Me? Upsetting people lol.

It's blogs like these that allow and encourage debate. I've loved these last few hours on here. It's actually re-established my interest in the site.

It's individuals that bounce in here like tigger after a couple of lines of toilet duck that ruin the place with their Harry Potter stealth cape (we can SEE you. It's toilet paper you silly puppy!) comments.

Bring these threads on. They bring smiles and thought all round. :o)

Am Sooooo glad to see the stones being mentioned as a "didnt really get", also U2 "One man come in the name of love...delay pedal set to max". Previously mentioned bono trying to save the world, wherever a photo opportunity arises.

Another hate (or severe dislike anyway) is Clapton - I believe when hendrix famously jammed with cream, that clapton (alledgedly!) ended up as a rhythm guitarist cos he couldnt live with jimi.

Unpopular likes:
Slipknot (don't go for the image etc but ace riffs)
Pixies/Breeders
Sisters Of Mercy
Suzanne Vega

Popular dislikes:
Elvis
Sinatra
Female singers that do that god-awful warbling rather than singing out properly (I really like female singers usually).

Guilty pleasures
Ultravox - incredibly unfashionable but they're top
Dead or Alive - gorilla-fur coats and collagen aside, some cracking mid-80s tuneage
Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls is just the coolest album ever
Pet Shop Boys - Until they went super-camp in the mid 90s they were awesome

The bands I should like!
Hot Chip
Elbow
Coldplay
U2
Rolling Stones - aside from the odd song they do nothing for me.
