What's your motivator?

I mean what keeps you playing?

Most of the folks on this site are in bands and (I presume) love doing it. We all go out in all weathers, at all hours to play in sometimes cramped and sometimes great environments, playing to either the bar staff and a passing cat or a packed house. We all know the motivation behind gigging, covers or originals. BUT:

What motivates you personally to keep playing your instrument or singing or whatever it is you do?

For me it's simply that I f*cking LOVE playing electric guitar. I'm never off the damned thing in one way or another. Either learning and re-arranging songs for the band, collaborating with people from all over the world making music on a computer, or playing live. Hell, I even love rehearsing! It's all guitar. I play at work every lunchtime too.

Even when my good lady is watching TV I will be on the laptop on music sites, looking at guitars and discussing them. Have never owned an acoustic and never will, because they simply aren't me and have never given me the drive that electrics do. But even when I watch people like Tommy Emmanuel, I am compelled to pick up my strat and try stuff out.

So what is it that motivates you to do what you do?

to be honest, I dont really know, I do love singin' and the buzz if it's going well you get is better than any drug, (so I've been told). I dont sing round the house, or in the shower or in the car. only time I do is rehearsal or gigs, did have lessons when I was younger, not that they did any good..... I guess it's just I've got a rock n roll heart, head and soul, I'm like you Mick, just born to perform I s'pose!!! \m/ \m/

i love playing live with a band, covers or originals, you just go to a place that nothing else can take you to, hard to describe it really, ha ha !
i seem to enjoy playing more the older i get, and also like to write and record music too..
basically, playing guitar just gives you a massive buzz !

It's the vibe you create when a bunch of muso's hit that "Click" button and it all comes together an the earth start's to move under yer feet an yer fingers are on fire with power from the slightest touch as you rip out them harmonics!!!!
other than that,
dunno really??
Certainly aint the money eh!

My drums are my ultimate pride & joy, I'd seriously be lost without them. Playing my drums to a live audience is one of the best feelings in the world.

But for me, since starting the Sugar Bullets it goes beyond just playing. I love getting the gigs, I love the promotion and networking side, I love thinking how I can make my band better....but I really love it when we've set eveything up at a venue and the lights shine dimly over our stage set-up just before we go on and I think to myself...I'm part of this. That's why I do this.

Amen to that Dean. I love my drums. I gave up playing for 18 months, sold my kits and semi-retired after years of playing in originals bands. I soon realised what a massive mistake it was and now I play in a covers band. For me it's all about the love of playing, the buzz of the gigs and the social side. It's nice to earn a few beer vouchers, but it's not the be all and end all. I also love discussing music and encouraging other musicians, which is why I like this site.

the music coming out of manchester in the late 80s onwards inspired me and has kept me going since. playing live is like a drug.

even nailing a solo in my bedroom when i was younger was brilliant. but its not about the guitars for me, even though im a guitarist, its about the beats and the combination of instruments. writing a song and seeing it grow and develop, then seeing people singing along to lyrics ive written and the rest of the band have written is the best thing about being in a band.

Well for me it's the love of playing, I have wanted to be in a band since I can remmember. But it's also about a number of things, I mean getting out at weekends, doing the thing you love and getting payed for it well what more can I say!. Some times things get on top of you but then somthing happens, a new tune a really good gig and I feel up for it again. I wish sometimes for it to be a full time job, who could ask for more?...

As a singer / frontman there`s a certain amount of shameful ego and nepotism that drives you to perform. Knowing that you are good at what you do , and have a roomfull of people watching and hopefully enjoying it. That, and the buzz already mentioned in previous posts that you get when it "clicks". A great band is more than just the sum of it`s members, something happens to make it bigger than that.
Also..playing Rock music at full tilt is a great form of stress relief.

I've been playing in bands since I was at school.....
I've been a drummer, a guitarist, a singer and eventually a bassist.....
What keeps me motivated....
My mum, girlfriends, wives, my kids (although I Love them to bits) get on my nerves and I need to get out of the house and let off some steam.....I won't be controlled and I refuse to grow -up.....
Also I HATE TV...gotta get out and play.....
I've played in Original bands, heavy Metal bands, cheesy rock covers, classic rock bands etc...but I've always wanted my own 'classic' Punk band.....now I've got it I'm gonna enjoy every minute of it.
If LGIT split (hopefully a long time off yet) I'm gonna form/join a Showaddywaddy Tribute band.....
I'll be in bands 'til I drop, it's in my blood.....

I play 'classic' punk to people who love what LGIT do....
Our audience is our motivation.....the nostalgia factor plays a major part in it too. 'Older' blokes (and sometimes chicks too) don't see bands like us very often and they usually make the most of it.
As long as there are people who want 'classic' Punk.....they'll get it....
I'm the youngest in my band at 45.....we'll play 'til we drop.
COS WE LOVE IT.....

This is how it might pan out ..
Rock Band until I`m too old to belt it out for 2 and a half hours without taking a lie down.
Then Country Band til I get bored ( couple of years I reckon )
Then Big Band / swing stuff so I can croon out the old standards.
Then Folk Music, so I can sit down and sing wearing an old cardigan.
Then Trad Jazz band, til someone else notices Iv`e actually popped off in my sleep during the clarinet solo.
A life in Music....

For me its searching for that elusive one night when everything is just so!!! I love the audience enjoying what we do ..... I love seeing one person who aint sure he is going to enjoy it when we soundcheck still there after the encore headbanging or shaking his cakes ..... I love it when the bar staff are getting off on what we do (they are being paid to be there and to see em getting off on our stuff is high praise!) but as |I alluded to in first sentence .... We all have many many nights Im sure when we are adequate as bands and musicians, the audience doesnt spot the hair raising moments, we get by and produce a good gig...BUT its those nights where, in our case, 5 guys hit a home run at the same time and its magical ... Its the same song we have played countless times but this time its so bang on its frightening ... Thats my biggest love of doing what i do!!

I just love singing!!! :-) I'd burst into song all the time at work if my line manager would let me! And playing with a lovely bunch of talented boys who also love it is the icing on the cake! :-)

Ann x

PS: And if my boys are the icing on the cake, then an appreciative audience is that indulgent second slice!!! Yum! :-)

dunno about motivation... if you're born to do something, you just do it

I sometimes wonder what the point of trawling round pubs playing to drunks is, but I can't stop playing music any more than I could voluntarily stop breathing... I was born to do it
