Gigs, England and the World Cup

To play or not to play that is the question?

We are being offered gigs on the nights when England are playing their World Cup matches. Is it a good idea to play gigs on these nights, or will the bands end up playin' second fiddle to Beckham, Gerrard and home barbecues?

We played what was normally a great gig at the Wagon and Horses Newhey [now defunct] on the day of a England World Cup Match!
The place was heaving when we got there which was early before the end of the Match!
Unfortunately England lost and they all went home sulking!!!!
Shit gig!

The band I was in had a German tour completely go a**e up when Germany got through to the finals in the late 70's.

Don't forget that the match won't end until 10.30pm (I presume that you mean the Saturday kick off) and people will probably be drinking all day to get into the mood. It could be messy, boisterous and prone to kicking off (obviously depending on the venue).

Take from that what you will. lol

Yeah, it would be a Saturday evening kick-off. I guess the mood of the people depends on if England win or not, and what stage of the competition we are at. Could be interesting either way... a huge celebration or a drowning of sorrows. Maybe we should learn 'We are the Champions' by Queen or something equally cheesy. Brings to mind when I played in an originals band,a local radio station used one of our songs as the theme tune to their World Cup programme. It was called 'Everybody gets there in the end', obviously we didn't. Lol.

LGIT had a gig booked on the night England play their first match against the warmongering Yanks....we rang the venue and both parties agreed to move the date to avoid the Match.....
See earlier blog.

Hey Steve, you lot don't need to do Teenage Kicks, you're better than that.....
I always say 'play to your strengths' the punters will like you if you're good at what you do rather that playing a 'popular' sheeple pleaser that may not be 'your' style.....
