Classic Rock/Punk - Three chords and a guitarist playing with himself?

Classic Rock/Punk - To Easy to play!!!

Having resurrected Pretty Vacant from our archive and learnt Cant get enough of your love in half hour . Its something I have thought for ages my opinions are this:

Punk - No talent 3 chord songs with a unique style cause there easier to play than Guitar Hero on the playstation.

Classic Rock - 3 chords all set up for the guitarist to caress his axe believing that after his first solo we all want to see 10 minutes of self indulgent bullshit.

We have been learning Use Somebody and Fast Fuse this week both Rock based indie songs but with so much more going on they are putting old music to shame. Obviously they are influenced by the old style Rock but as music matures it shows how bad musicians where years ago to spaced out on magic mushrooms to construct a proper song.
And as for Punk shout chord shout chord end of song.

I like Punk and Classic Rock but its not the most skillful music to play!!

Even Stairway to heaven could be boxed off in an hour tops .

I know I am gonna get some shit for this but if you cant voice an opinion then free world it is not.

And to quote a great man ' Secretly, I wanted to look like Jimi Hendrix, but I could never quite pull it off. '

Interesting point hulk. Kind of agree with you a tiny bit but having watched a really good punk band last night I've realised that it's perhaps not as easy. Don't get me wrong, musically there's not a great deal going on but to get the band sounding tight, hitting all those stops and breaks, most of time at about 100 miles an hour is pretty tricking. It's easy to do something hard badly, but very difficult to do something easy brilliantly. I can't really comment on the classic rock side of stuff but to my knowledge you need to have a certain level of profficiency to handle some of them tunes. Indie-wise I don't think bands like us get enough credit, especially a really good one like THE FIX. bands like arctic monkeys, kasabian, the fratellis, tlsp etc are making some really interesting music and it's great fun to play, I love the newer stuff in our set (and we will be doing fast fuse soon as well pal, bet I sing it better! ;-P
all in all there's probably an argument for both sides

I don't even think this is 'your' opinion Hulk tbh, just another attention seeking blog (just my opinion tho eh).

You know what mate, I really wish you'd have been at our gig at the White Hart last night, twas electric. Chords don't even come into it; its supposed to be a passion for the songs you play. The raw energy and the way that gets tranferred over to your audience. That feeling is second to none irrelevant of how many feckin chords there are.

And I'm sorry but 'Use Somebody' and 'Fast Fuse' are putting "old" music to shame? Err..right ok then!

putting live music under a microscope isnt always a good idea live musics never about whos the best musician, you could wheel in hundreds of singers with a greater vocal range than Elvis but with none of his charisma, you could equally find dozons of guitarists with a greater knowledge of music than Hendrix , but with none of the "vibe" that Hendrix created, dismissing genres of music becasue they ar easy to play is missing the point of live music, its more about entertainment than musicanship, thats the differance between a gig and a recietal, but i understand the point your making !

No hulk your right, I am shit and maybe I should give it up BUT then again I have got time to practice and get better haven't I. I unlike yourselve do not have the age barrier staring me in the face. Your recent posts have the whiff of an old, worn down, pathetic man desperately firing shots as he slowly loses his battle with age, trading on past glories as well hulk? There's nowt worse.
So you carry on pal, unlike you, this time next year I'll still be SINGING in a band. Catch

Right Hulk I've read it again and your original post still says:

"We have been learning Use Somebody and Fast Fuse this week both Rock based indie songs but with so much more going on they are putting old music to shame."

Then in your reply you say "No there not putting it to shame" - make your mind up.

Hulk I presume you're in band then right, but I don't see any links or reference in your profile?? Would it be possible to post a link to your website or anywhere where we can make our own judgements.

You can't criticise other bands and not have the balls to let people see yours in action.

Hmmm. Assuming you're being serious then I have to disagree. A lot of the music that is simple in format still needs playing well. Many bands play oversimplified versions of some of the 3-4 chord songs. How many bands do you see where the bassist just plays the root notes of the chords rather than playing the authentic bassline (eg She Sells Sanctuary, Ever Fallen In Love), or the guitarist misses out certain open strings that are supposed to ring through chord changes on an Iggy/Stooges song?

the Wish you were here album was recorded on 8 tracks because the band didn't rust the tape to hold 16 tracks (16 track had only just come out) compare it with most new stuff which has the benefit of unlimited digital tracks, VSTs, you would expect it to be more complicated. However, from what I have heard of a lot of modern music i.e. Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Greenday, Kaiser Chiefs etc all they succedd in creating is a wall of noise which is usually very badly produced and far from complicated. And I have noticed Musicians who accuse others of fret wanking are usually those who can't do it themselves. Which is a bit like me telling Ryan Giggs he's a shit footballer

the sugar bullets were ace last night, i watched them, and also, ive been to watch the damned a few times, and though i dont think they are at there best these days, but, in their day i.e. 78/79/80 they were effing awsome, and captain sensible was one of the best guitarists i ever saw, just my opinion, but some musicians would not be able to play punk because they dont understand the punk scene, it was just not about the music, it was a movement and a attitude, guess you had to be there to comment on it !!!

Too true ride on.
I think the comments came from a rehearsal we had as stated.
Some tunes as stated have the trusted intro verse chorus bridge solo etc.
Some have more stop starts etc and can take longer to learn and get tight between the band.
If a song sounds good no matter what, end of in my opinion.

Some points to consider:

1. Some people on here are wayyy too precious. It's a fuckin giggle mate. Calm down.
2. We (Whatever!) have got the patience of saints.
3. Whatever happens within the band stays within the band. The comings and goings are nobody elses business and are of no relevance to this blog.
4. We are cross genre legends. We play classic rock/punk/indie/skiffle/jazz/bluegrass anthems. End of.

mmmm read these blogs and I had seen these guys before towards the end of last year and was pretty well entertained both by the overall sound and a frontman who entertained so I took some mates and went to see them recently in Darwen - firstly can I say it's not the same band!!! and I've checked their website and the videos are NOT the band I saw. The current singer is well 'in key sometimes' with no stage presence and the overall sound lacked a decent sound engineer. This band have lost their X factor !!! So be warned.

2. @brian Ferry - I wanted to look like Jimi Hendrix, but I could never quite pull it off.

You wanted to sound like Bob Dylan but you did a shit job of that as well. haha

3. @Ian Runciman - Ryan Giggs a shit footballer? nah, just a shit head!

Just a few little tongue in cheek comments guys, lighten up a little eh? It's the Hulks preference to perform challenging material. Nothing wrong with that, it's his choice. Personally I like to practice challenging stuff (the only way to improve your playing) but when I gig I want to relax more and get into the groove.

Hello TheMinister. I'm not sure if you're referring to Whatever! or another band. If you are referring to Whatever! then many thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. May I enquire as to where you saw us play? We always welcome constructive feedback, so maybe next time you can come and say hi. We have had a change of personnel recently but surprisingly, your feedback goes against everything that the venues are telling us. We're getting exceptional feedback from venues and fans on content and quality of performance and sound and lots of repeat bookings (including venues that had refused to book us previously).

Now come on John had a few sherbets and thought what the heck lets stir it up.

Couple of points I am certainly not the singer on our website videos - Thank fuck for that I would rather be who I am than an average elephant impersonator!!!!. But if you had looked at the site properly I am the singer on the demos - enough said so who sounds more in key?????

I am open to criticism as some of the songs we do I am abit weak on but the fantastic band behind me more than makes up for it. As ST said I can take the critcism but when its our ex singer still reeling from being sacked as he was shit I for one will not take the stick. Every venue we have played since I have come back have commented on the fact as was stated when you were in the band that your vocals to nick from little Ben - 'The only key you know is a YALE Key'.

And secondly to be fair the EX singer was a good guy for interacting with the crowd but more they were entertained due to him acting like a cock in the audience and that is not from the band that is from the venues WHATEVER played whilst you were in the band.

As for the sound engineer......hhhhhmmmmmmmm sour grapes one thinks. Where did you see us at Marigolds or Goostrey??????

And also we never had the X Factor to start with even when Olive from on the buses was the front man.

Critcism is accepted there are better singers than me but when the landlord said ' we were the best band he has had on in along time' says it all.

I thank you

Hulkamania man of the people singing out of key but getting paid and getting laid ( by his wife). And alot of stage precence 18 stone its all there son.

Minister you are right we are not the same band and the landlords are very happy about that believe me.
Funnily enough the darwen gig the "new landlord" is dubious about bands at the minute but couldnt give us his mobile number quick enough at the end of the gig.
Guess what we even had people dancing at the so called gig you were at.
Maybe its because they felt safe without an elephant impersonator standing in front of them.
There is a gig in Stcokport next month i want to go to maybe see you there eh?
