And a great jam night it is too. Not one of these palavers where the house band monopolise the event with stuff they gig and whose sole purpose should be to get the session started...not to, with mock humility, say they are limited to playing three songs and then stick two fingers up to everyone else there by playing a 4 song medley as their last song with barely an attempt made to creatively segue from one song to the next.

In my opinion, jams are for musicians, not bands. I can't see the point in getting up as a band and playing stuff you have rehearsed or gigged to death. Have the guts to get up with people you've never played with before, try musical styles you are unfamiliar with, or songs you've never heard of. These are opportunities for people to hone their communication skills, work on improvisation and to put themselves out there and bugger the consequences. Who cares if it doesn't sound anything like the original. Just enjoy the collaboration. The room lights up when something original comes out of totally disparate sets of people coming together to try new things.

Fair enough if you are an originals band and want to test your new material on an audience before you gig it. I can get with that but
who the hell wants to see classic rock covers by a band who gigs them week after week. I can go to a gig for that.

Anyway, the Woolpack jam has been a real quality night every time I've had a look in. Quality gear (not a broken down kit with faulty hardware and broken cymbals) and always plenty of folk in for you to try your hand at something you might not have had the opportunity to in your current band.

Oh and you can get chips from the takeaway next door AND bring them into the pub which makes this jam night entirely made of win!

Oh...part 2....it's hosted by a bloke who used to be a stripper and has some signature move called a "foreskin smash" so any long haired guitar widdlers who want to play "Whole Lotta Rosie" because it's "safe" can expect a face full of bell end cheddar

Rant over.
