Sticky Fingers @ The Cheshire Cheese!

An impartial revue!

Good vibe going here!
mostly down to the Bass and Drums combination which was bouncing to say the least!
Vocalist has an excellent set of lungs on him but can’t dance much better than yer average drunk [keep the bugger still guys its embarrassing?]
Guitarist was also very competent but does what a lot of guitarists do and that's put in his own solos!
This I don’t like as I always feel it's disrespectful to the punters!
The punters are experts on lead solos! They know when it's not right!
Anybody who thinks "they won’t notice the difference" is kidding themselves!

This said don’t be put off! This is rock'in band no mistake!
They kept my interest to the bitter end!
Couldn’t have left early as there was too much of a vibe going on!

Looking for a band for your venue?
You won’t go wrong with these guys!
Get em booked!

it depends on the solo, some wonderful songs have terrible guitar solos

theres a vid somewhere of Slash playing "beat it" with Jacko and he does is own version of the solo .. one can only speculate why .

Good point but solos dont have to be played note for note.
Surely you can put your own take on them.
I used to play with a shit hot guitarist years ago he could play solo's note for note but wouldn't.
Playing by numbers as he would call it.

Some songs require the solos to be played "as the record". I'm thinking, in particular, "Queen" songs for example, because Brian's playing is very melodic and can be hummed along to...
However, bluesy-type solos in songs can be elaborated upon. The "Paradise City" outro is one were the guitarist can just go "off on one" and do their own thing, as Slash himself does. However! "Sweet Child O'Mine" is too identifiable and must remain as intact as possible...apart from that E harmonic minor lick @ 3:22, when every guitarist I've ever seen (even Slash @ The Roxy '86 gig) gets it "not quite right". LOL ..

Basically, fair dooz if you can nail the solos spot on, but if you can improvise a little bit, why not? When I first went to a Jam Night many moons ago, I played Clapton's "Crossroads" note-for-note, and the guy running it said it was very unusual for someone to learn it in such detail. I assumed (wrongly..poor kid!) that everyone had to play it exactly as the record. I tend to improvise a lot now.. Makes every performance a bit different and special then. :-)

"Vocalist has an excellent set of lungs on him but can’t dance much better than yer average drunk" Whats that? calling someones dancing.. you cant do that..thats like telling a new mum her babys ugly...lol... i get into trouble for 'cutting shapes' however i usually just make the rest of the band laugh, and to quote somebody who said it... dancing is just a vertical expression of a horizontal desire...and if i can get that acrross succesfully then i'll be happy..

When I said "Dance" I was being overly polite!
It's more the kind of thing you'd see when someone's on Acid at a Rave party?
But the guy can really sing!
I'd work with him no problem but I'd show him a video first of what he looks like when he's performing?
If that didn't work I'd strap him to an upturned table!!!

Everybody will have an opinion on whether or not to put the extra effort in and learn the correct lead solo! but at the end of the day I can tell you from my experience that punters really appreciate hearing it done properly!
You’re going out as a covers band and you don’t change the main structure of the song, so why change the lead solo???
those who do this should maybe go out as a Jazz impro covers band???

Nar! but I know what punters say to me about it and if you consider how much time and effort that goes into the construction of a lead solo on these "classic" tracks that we all adore then you have to look and listen objectively to your improvised lead solo and draw your own conclusion as to it's place in that song?
The majority of impro solo's you hear just don't fit the song?
Fret Wanking I believe is the correct term?

I play bass with the Lazzies, but I've been playing guitar for longer. About 20 years guitar and 12 years for bass.. I'm that rare breed of guitarist...the one that treats bass with respect. b-bum ;-)

I'm with Red Zoo on the dancing thing. Anyway I wouldn't strictly call it dancing just moving to the music cos I was that singer. Just don't say it was out of time!

I prefer the ORIGINAL band not to do solos as they were recorded. There are exceptions to the rule notably when the solo is playing a strong melody which is a big part of the song. People like Dave Gilmour, Toni Iommi and Steven Rothery are good examples of this.
