what i went for, and amp review within, warning, may contain guitar geekery

after selling my rack setup in december(sounded awesome but got fed up with all the fuss with it) i really liked the look of the new Peavey 6505+ 112 combo(i have had the 6505 head and 5150 212 in the past), they are at a very good price point and will be available in the UK shops within the next week or two, check out that new 6505 cos theyre gonna sell like hot confectionary at the price of about 450 but.........

after much deliberation and thought i decided last week to go for the amp ive been lusting after for ages, the Marshall JVM series, ive had so many Marshalls over my 19 years of playing,JMP-1 and 8008 rack, 30th anniv, JMP master volume head, valvestates,mg practicers, dsl tsl,and love em, i couldnt help thinking if i got another brand i would end up coming back to Marshall, (as i always always have done)

the one i have bought is the JVM 205c combo, its a 2x12 with a programmable footswitch, the two channels have three gain modes and you can save the settings to the floorboard giving you a wide range of Marshall mayhem from many of their classic amps over the years, with the hottest gain modes they are really competing with the high gain usa amps, you can even program a solo boost with the twin master volumes and switch fx loop and reverb on and off remotely as well as midi control if you want to go down that route, the celestion speakers are both different types(a trick used in many american boutique amps it also has the superb Marshall emulated xlr line out , and for a 2x12 it is a good compact size with recessed carrying handles at each side as well as one on the top.controls layout is intuitive and not at all confusing and after half an hour with it i had it all figured out and the sounds saved, with my Boss Gt-6 in the fx loop its the cherry on the cake and a very versatile and superb souding rig, really happy, as i was striving for versatility that i had with my rack in a smaller but still powerful format, this achieves it for me

stay awake at the back!!

how does it sound, awesome, unmistakeable Marshall but with such a smooth tone and the clean tone is one of the best i have heard from them, the high gain and classic gain tones and fluid and warm and make you play even better and totally inspiring, love it

ive seen Megadeth using the JVMs and ive heard Joe Satriani is using them for the Chickenfoot stuff, another classic amp from the legends!!

It's a great feeling when your amp sings to you. Personally I like my amps to be simple and I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't have to work hard at getting a good sound from your amp. If an amp is compatable with a guitar then it will sing. I use a basic Marshall JCM 800 series 100W valve head and a 140W (4x10) angled cab. I don't think that it's ever been higher than number 6 and it sounds great with both Fenders and Giboes.

dont knoww why but i had a marshall for about two years and never fell in love with it. not sure what type it was or owt but it was a proper cab and head. it always sounded too fizzy for my liking. looked the mutts nuts but soon got board of carrying it up three flights of stairs to practice.
got rid and got myself and fender hot rod deluxe combo and have never looked back.

Taking bets on how long Rob keeps this one.
He changes his amps quicker than his grundies.

i have found that the simple amps tend to have a more natural/pure sound than multi channel amps(my fave is my Laney GH 50 L with an overdrive pedal...very, very close to a jcm 800 2203 but with a bit more gain and bottom end), and using my guitar's volume for clean/dirty sounds, but some players will need more options so compromises have to be made.
it's all down to an individuals taste at the end of the day, enjoy your amp Rob and let us know how it was at a gig
