only give one, not five! (and you can't choose your own band's drummer)

Mine's Keith Moon

just so dramatic, energetic & unpredictable...

re keith moon this is a classic................

Moon's reputation for erratic behaviour was something he cultivated. Once, on the way to an airport, Moon insisted they return to their hotel, saying , "I forgot something. We've got to go back!" When the limo returned, Moon ran to his room, grabbed the TV while it was plugged in, threw it out the window and into the pool. He then jumped back into the limousine, sighing "I nearly forgot."

ok, could bore you all to tears here, but here's a few of mine;

Bonham...solid, no frills, awesome sound...need I say more?
Moon....the man was effing unique, ahead of his time blah blah
Copeland...you might not like the music of Sting and his pals, but you can't deny, Stuart Copeland invented a totally unique style
Portnoy....just try and get anywhere near those double bass drum fills???
Keith Carlock; you've probably never heard of him..session guy who has played on Steely Dan's last couple of albums, plus live tours (check him out at drum clinic on 17/3 with Manchester Drum Centre)
...and last but not least, Jeff Porcaro of Toto...what a bloody waste of a telent, the way that guy died..pointless.

Probably John Bonham for his dynamics range and feel.

Closely followed by Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Terry Bozzio and Carl Palmer.

This is my favourite local drummer. Jonathon from Blackpool, he's just jazzing about here but he can play anything.

As you can see like most jazz drummers (and John Bonham) he only uses one tom. I would have thought that it would be more difficult to play with less drums. Maybe I'm wrong...anyone?

Alex Van Halen anybody ? - very recognizable sound.

Very predictable from me but Phil Collins gets my vote

Listen to The Cinema Show and Suppers Ready on the finest live album ever
Seconds Out.

He also defined the compressed sound of the 80s with That Drum Fill....;-)

All the drummers mentioned above are awesome though.

# Posted by Massive Electric Storm - 25/02/2010, 09:59 (GMT)

Keith Moon - irreplaceable. I felt a bit sorry for Kenney Jones when Pete Townshend said he regretted using Jones cos he's not a 'power drummer'. Saw The Who in 2001, Zak Starkey did a great job but nobody before or since has been as explosive (sometimes literally) as Moon.
Ginger Baker
John Bonham
I also think Phil Collins is a top drummer, comes out with some ear-grabbing fills. Shame about his warbling, though.

As with most jazz drummers...when uve mastered the art of the "paradiddle"...you qualify as a good drummer!

Hey Phil can warble with the best of them ;-)

I just happen to love his voice matey and have done since I first heard it in 1977.

Best wishes

Mitchell, Bonham, Pert, Collins, Moon - just so many and all different. I've seen Phil Collins live about 12 times either solo or with Genesis, so it has to be P C for moi.

Hi John,

I used to like PC's vox, thought his first few albums were decent. Then he did Another Day in Paradise and gradually went downhill. I think it was a case of over-exposure. Only my opinion, mind. Maybe he's due for reappraisal.

Steve Grantley (SLF), Tre Cool (Green Day), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Thomas Lang (Independant), Joey Jordison (Slipknot), Danny Carey (Tool), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre).

But my 2 all time fave's are:

Neil Peart (Rush) - there'll never be another rock drummer like Neil an absolute legend, some of his arrangements just cant be matched. The only drummer that makes me feel the drums are telling a story, like theyre talking back to him (us)...so melodic and perfect.

Alex Gonzalez (MANA) - saw this band whilst living in Spain theyre massive in most Spanish speaking countries, absolutely blown away by this guy, his stick work is just mid blowing & his stage presence is just as good.

And Alex is the only drummer who can do this so well:

This guy isnt bad either:

Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy)I to agree here with Roj, he has got to be one of te most under estimated rock drummers f our time,
A close 2nd is The late John Bonham Led Zep

So many technically great drummers have already been mentioned but I tend to go for those who are creative within the music that they are playing, even adding "riffs" that become well-known hooks of the song. Also, those who can really nail the groove of the song and drive people to dance. For me, Terry Chambers of XTC would be one such influence.

whitesnake and thin lizzy are 2 of my fave bands ever so its no surprise they were in the running for me

Just one!

Wow that's not easy. Neil Peart was a long time favourite for me. So that's a 'one..'

But Terry Bozzio is an incredibly musical player. But then again Phil Rudd is the king of 4 on the floor, then there's Tony Beard and Chris Layton for the Texas shuffle and for groove Bernard Purdie, Tony Thompson, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd. Carlton Barrett for Reggae. Dave Dicenso, Nathaniel Townley have amazing feel and technique, Sheila E, Airto and Alex Acuna for Latin, Dave Weckl, Kirk Covington, for Jazz Fusion, Gene Krupa for Big band for me, Jazz? jeesh millions...Big kit players or smalll kit ?
.....I'm digressing aren't I have hundreds of favourite drummers me...blimey choosing 'one' ??? It's like choosing you favourite child / pet

I do have a favourite guitarist - Jeff Beck....

But I find Charlie Hunter amazing as plays Melody rythym and Bass parts all at once, Loved Andy Summers approached to Reggae / Rock.
Rory Gallagher....sorry! sorry,...i'm doing it again. :)

oh sod it.. loads of people have put more than one, so here goes (apart from Keith Moon)

Stephen Morris (Joy Division/New Order) - the most revolutionary drummer you never heard of

Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth) - superhumanly good... hired by Zappa because he could play like Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio and Chester Thompson all rolled into one

Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting) - the greatest drummer Zappa ever had... ridiculous polyrhythmic genius

Ringo Starr - for being Ringo... the perfect man for the job

Travis Barker (Blink 182) - turned Blink 182 from being a plodding pop punk band into a punk pop band with fantastic drumming

Bernard Purdie - what a feel... effortlessly grooving, absolutely fantastic
