Perfect snippets of music

not necessarily a whole song, but.......

I heard a song tonight I haven't heard for ages, and it got me thinking again.

I know there are songs we all consider perfect (whigfield, the macarena etc.....), but I sometimes hear a clip of music and think 'that can't be improved upon'. I wondered if anyone else thinks the same way, and what are your perfect musical moments?

Here's mine:

The intro section to Reptilia by The Strokes
The section at the end of Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order (the 12" version) where he sings the song with all the effects on his voice.
The very end acoustic bit of Rest in Peace by Extreme
The guitar solo to Get the Funk Out be Extreme
The guitar solo to Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi
the guitar solo to Mother by Pink Floyd
the intro guitar chords and the pre-chorus section of My Last Serenade by Killswitch Engage

I'm talking about those moments in songs where it really gets to you - it's so good you could almost cry......... almost I said - there was something in my eye !!

Your turn!

There are 2 guitar "solo" pieces on the first Extreme album. The actual solo piece in the middle of the album that is my favourite meedlefest.
But my favourite piece of GUITAR ever is the one that Nuno plays over keyboards after Rock-a-bye. No meedle at all. Just perfect (to my ear) soulful playing.

@Bad Horsie - excellent to see there are actually some people (well you and me!) that thought extreme were a decent band!!

@Guns or Roses - good call on November Rain! It is a stupendous piece of music.

The synth-nerd that I am, I really like intro to Spacelab by Kraftwerk and the synth-strings build-up in the middle of Vienna by Ultravox. The outro to Underpass by John Foxx is one of my favourite pieces of synth music too.

In non-geeky synth pop world, November Rain's final solo deserves a mention. I hate it when TV and radio cut the song at the end of the piano bridge to it. I love the lift sound and drum solo intro to Fireball by Deep Purple too - Ian Paice is class, I think that's best intro to a song ever.

DOTD's soundtrack is awesome, as is the film itself - one of my favourites. Goblin scored loads of Argento's films as well, which are great (if a little weird). Really like Day of the Dead's soundtrack as well. I'm not sure what the connection between zombies and synth music is but Zombie Flesh Easters also has an amazing synth soundtrack. Truly bizarre!

I am a sucker for pinched harmonics (squealies lol)
So for me it has to be Nuno's solo on A song for Love on Pornograffitti
Yeah the song is a bit cheesy and poofy, but if I had a penny for every time I have listened to that solo I'd have £15:53 pmsl

Also Zakk's solo on No More Tears, love it.

My fav non guitar solo piece of music is probably White Zombie's More Human Than Human, loads happening in the intro then building into a motherfekker of a thumping groove with the slide guitar cutting through yer skull like...er....something that cut's through your skull.....hmmmm cheque please
:-D

Bombs away by the Police,Andy Summers solo,Sting would only let him have 8 bars its cool!

Lethal weapon - Mel Gibson about to commit suicide and eric clapton playing this cool guitar tune while he sticks the Beretta in his gob that well gives me goosebumps

Bladerunner - Bladerunner blues by Vangelis...synth heaven

The wall Pink Floyd the guitar solo is another goosebump special!

Fine calls on the Extreme tracks, especially the acoustic bit at the end of 'Rest In Peace'. For great Nuno moments, I'd also add the ridiculous solo in 'Play With Me', the ridiculous solo in 'Get The Funk Out', the sheer simplicity and brilliance of the opening riff to 'Pornograffiti', all his guitar work on 'Am I Ever Gonna Change' and every fill he plays on 'Hip Today'.

And the sheer ferocity of Zaak Wylde's riffs (I could include every solo of his if I go down that route) always amaze me, especially Desire, No More Tears, Troubled Wine, Losin' Your Mind and Concrete Jungle.

Marvellous stuff.

Great call on the No More Tears - though I loved Mama i'm coming home too!

Who knew there so many Extreme lovers! I thought they were universally hated. The main guitar riff to Hole Hearted is pretty spiffing too!

Seems a whole kettle of worms has been opened here! I used to have the Bladerunner album (it got nicked somewhere) - brilliant piece of music from start to finish!

just remembered this one:

To Live is to Die by Metallica - the section where Kirk Hammett does the 'fanning' over the clean arpeggios. Gives me goosebumps!

Also the chorus to Blasphemous Rumours by Depeche Mode, and the first 8 bars of Enjoy the Silence were stunning! (as is the whole song)

Great thread my two pennies worth pink floyd shine on you crazy diamond when the guitar comes in after what seems an age, night ranger sister christian when it builds up to "motorin" line drums quality, triumph midsummer daydream, journey dont stop believing when the guitar first comes in, intro to deep purple sometimes I feel like screaming with steve morse just immense!

"And if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die. And if a ten ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side - well the pleasure, the privilege is mine"

(There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths)

For every hopeless romantic growing up in the 80's and 90's - brilliant. To everyone else - it's probably a bag of shit! lol

Johnny Marr's tremelo-laden intro to How Soon Is Now.
His fanatastic opening riff to What Difference Does It Make.
Simple but brilliant - The Edge's outro solo on All I Want Is You.
Hendrix's solo on All Along The Watchtower.
The intro to Gun's 'Money'.
Slash's guitar intro on 'Estranged'.
Guitar riff on Janet Jackson's Black Cat.
Opening riff to Soundgarden's Rusty Cage.
Guitar solo on Robbie William's 'Feel'.
Intro riff to Roxette's 'The Look'.
Zakk Wylde's outro solo on CPR's (Coven, Pitrelli, Riley) cover of Stevie Wonder's 'I Wish'.
Brian May's opening multi-layered madness leading into that riff on 'Dead On Time'.
Guitar solo on Jimmy Nail's 'Calling Out Your Name'.

And, to finish this lengthy list, as an exiled Geordie (moved down here at the tender age of 3), the absolute beauty of Mark Knopfler's 'Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)'. Brings me out in goosebumps every time.

never thought i'd see roxette's name on nwb!! it is a GREAT tune though!

@piggery bandana - an extreme tribute band? now that would be ace! would probably only appeal to nwb members, but it would be great!!

i thought the whole pronografitti album was excellent - funky, virtuoso, great harmonies, well written songs. decadence dance is bloomin marvellous!

this is a dead interesting thread!

I could have chucked a few Roxette tunes in there Mick! Joyride? Guitar solo to 'Listen To Your Heart'. Sleeping In Your Car? Belting stuff! Per Gessle was a hell of a pop song-writer - very underated in my opinion! God - I'd love to do a band rocking up a few of those pop classics!

And I remember getting Pornograffiti as a 16 year old and being blown away by it. We saw them live at the Manchester International II (remember that?!) just after the album came out and Nuno was just on a different planet. A month or so after that they released More Than Words as a single. They returned to Manchester a few months after that and played the G-Mex!

Every song on that album is a classic. As you say, fantastic tunes, great vocals, fantastic riffs and guitar playing which suggested Nuno was superhuman at times.

I saw Extreme at the G-Mex too (wonder if it was same gig?) - can't just remember the year, but they were supported by Hardline (proper widdly stuff - I remember they did a ballad with about 98 screaming solos in it!) Nuno's flight of the bumblebee solo was something to behold!

My first band used to do Tragicomic - that was a bloody good tune too! I wonder if the lads would be up for hole hearted now that there seems to be a bit of interest in this fine band!

@Bad Horsie (Mick) - must have missed your post in amongst the new ones there! Surely we'd all have to wear disguises? Most of my mates thought Extreme were a right old bunch of poofs!!

It would be quite an ensemble though wouldn't it? A drummer, bass player, singer and legion of screaming guitars trying to recreate one small mans amazing guitar playing!

JMJ is a legend, saw him at NEC last year and it blew me away. Absolutely awesome sound and a great showman to boot.

# Posted by 53 Degrees North - 15/03/2010, 13:57 (GMT)

@Socialtornado - not really comparing them - i dont know enough about Sigur Ros to do that. I had a listen to a snippet of them on youtube, and the first thing that sprang to mind was that whole layered keyboard sound snow patrol have going on in chasing cars.

sorry if i offended !!

@Film One - I was supposed to go see him for the london docklands concert in the 90's. There was a serious delay in the date after i'd bought my ticket as he couldn't get permission to do the things he wanted to from the council / police (i heard tell he wanted some helicopters doing a synchronised fly-by!).

As a result, I couldn't go to the re-scheduled gig due to work, so sold my ticket. Gutted!!

@53 Degrees North: Lol. No offence taken. Take some time out to listen to Takk all the way through and you will realise how wrong the comparison is!! Not being a music snob, just pointing out the poor comparison :o)

You missed something truly amazing Mick, even doing his "stripped back" show he put on at the NEC was mind blowing. Walking out of a giant cloud of laser light playing a keytar solo was brilliant, twin that with about a million pounds (no exaggeration) worth of synths on stage, the sound was incredible. Goodness knows what he had in store for your show!

Can't wait to see him again, if he ever comes back to the UK.

Another tune, from a completely different genre, which always leaves an impression on my is the quiet middle-8 on Black Metallic by Catherine Wheel, especially when it kicks in again at full power. Awesome stuff. They could equally belong in the "Bands who should've been huge thread".

I loved Hardline's first album! Yes - a lot of it was just a Neil Schon wnak-a-thon but there were some great tunes on there. I miss a lot of that old hair-metal era - much maligned at the time but there were a hell of a lot of great bands around during the mid-late 80's/early 90's.

Good shout! In fact there's quite a few more on both The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. U2's best two albums by a mile.

# Posted by 53 Degrees North - 15/03/2010, 23:09 (GMT)

@Mick Green - that was my era really. Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Extreme (obviously!), Warrant, WASP, Black n Blue, Skid Row, even Bon Jovi's early stuff. I could go on - so I will! Motley Crue, Kiss, all the english stuff, Maiden, Cinderella, Tigertailz anyone?!, Van Halen, Vinnie Vincent Invasion - the list goes on! And that's before you include the hard/thrash stuff like Annihilator, Onslaught, Nuklear Assault, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica etc etc etc.!

I did buy a Hardline single after that gig - think it's called can't find my way home. I did like it!

Actually, talking of all this, i'm now going to throw the intro riff to dream warriors by dokken into the mix!

'Good shout! In fact there's quite a few more on both The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. U2's best two albums by a mile. '

Definitely - streets ahead of all their other albums. From those 2 albums, I also love his intro to 'One Tree Hill' and everything he does on 'Bullet The Blue Sky'. Rattle & Hum - I love the simplicity of 'Silver & Gold' and 'God Part II'.

@Mick - Jeez, that's a hell of a list! I loved Poison, Extreme(!), Warrant, Skid Row, Jovi, Crue & Cinderella! Add to that Van Halen, White Lion, Slaughter, Great White, Whitesnake and Giant and I'm in musical heaven! Oh for the days of the original 'Headbangers Ball' when we first got Sky back then. Marvellous!
