Lynyrd Skynyrd

How good are they?

My big bro just gave me the entire back catalogue of Lynyrd Skynyrd on CD,( 'cos he's gone mp3 nuts and doesn't want CD's 'cluttering up his space' anymore) and WOW!

I've always liked them, got 'Pronounced' and a 3 CD compilation, but the first 5 studio albums plus the live 'One More for the Road' are just fekking awesome.

Some of the later stuff with the new line up is Ok, but none touches the earlier stuff.

But it got me thinking, how many more bands are there out there where everyone knows a couple of singles or albums, but a select few know how good they are in their entirety? (Another one for me is Blue Oyster Cult - everyone knows 'Don't Fear the Reaper', which is almost entirely like nothing else they do, but they are actually a brilliant albums band with an amazing guitarist in Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser).

So come on guys, turn me onto some new music; I love getting into new stuff.........

I was introduced to Skynyrd in the 70's via " Pronounced " and was fortunate to see them at Knebworth with the Stones and 10 CC. Great band. Watch Hard To Handle, Max is well into them,

Rick.

Awesome band, they were awesome at the apollo a few weeks ago, new stuff sounds fab live too, first time i saw them was at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis in 2001 and honestly never seen a crowd atmosphere like it, there mustve been 70,000 in the crowd that night, Pronounced is favourite album closely followed by Second Helping.

Skynyrd were THE BAND from the states. Pronounced is one of my all time favorite albums, some great stuff on it.
The epitomy of A BAND. There was nobody in Skynyrd who was a premier league muso, perhaps barring Leon Wilkeson - but only bassists will know that! The success of the band was the way they gelled together.
When the plane went down Skynyrd died. I cant listen to the new band, it would be sacrilage to do so. Lynyrd Skynyrd were a band of the 70's and should be remembered as that. The present band, just like todays Thin Lizzy are mere tributes at best.

Hey Rick I was there at Knebworth too! 1976. First time I'd heard Skynryd and I remember to this day the goosebumps I got listening and watching them perform Freebird! Then that guy had a wank on stage whilst everyone waited for 10cc to get their act together! LOL!

@ Rick
Thank you - my favourite Show Finale..............

@ everyone else
The best album is their final in '77 - STREET SURVIVORS
Featuring their "new" guitarist Steve Gaines - Absolutely AWESOME guitarist, singer and songwriter.
The only person RVZ felt comfortable sharing singing duties with and his guitar playing injected a whole new venom into the 3 guitar line up - check out the many Knebworth 76 videos on Youtube.

Songs such as :
Whats Your Name
I Know a Little (written by Steve)
You got that right(Steves vocal is the higher of the two)
Honky Tonk Night Time Man
Ain't No Good Life(Steve on main Vocal)

Street Survivors is just ahead of the finest Live album of all time - One More For/From The Road

There's a whole lot of decent Southern rock out there Al.

Blackfoot
Molly Hatchet
Gov't Mule
The Allman Bros (to an extent)

Max - I totally agree with you, 'Street Survivors' is absolutely brilliant, the songs are all well crafted and superbly executed. It makes you wonder what they would have achieved if the trajedy hadn't occured!

And 'One More For/From The Road' is right up there with the best live albums.

What a band!

@ Rob - I'll check out Black Stone Cherry - heard quite a lot about them, but for some reason have never listened to them.

@ Mick (Bad Horsie) - I'll certainly have a listen to all those mentioned, although I'm pretty sure I've already heard The Allman Bros. Still working on getting to see you!

@ Peacemaker

I won't hear the existing band flamed........

The Awesome Gary Rossington - writer of most of Skynyrds top songs is still on guitar

Ronnie's little Bro on vocals

And the Fantastic Rickey Medlocke - Skynyrds original drummer(yes its true!) on guitar - the ultimate showman!

The rest of the band are all top class musicians

Billy Powells replacement Mike Keys is Brilliant

The 3rd guitarist whose name i've forgotten was pinched from the Charlie Daniels band - plays the cleaner Strat parts superbly

They were in TOP form at the Appollo 2 weeks ago..........

@ H2H - I was tempted to go to see them at the Apollo BUT I just can't get on with the new album at all.

I like most of the stuff the 'new' Skynyrd has done, but this new one ('Gods and Guns') just doesn't do it for me.

I wonder how pissed off they get that they are still most well known for 'Freebird' and 'Sweet Home Alabama' even after all this time and all the new music they've made?!

think they only played 2 songs from new album - not much a fan of it either really

Don't suppose they can complain - playing all the old tracks - keeps them on the road and living the "lifestyle"

OK Hard To Handle - no way was I dissing the new band mate, not in a position to, coz I aint really sat and listened; as you say yourself the new stuff aint riviting is it? On your recommendation I will dig out Street Survivors though, a Synyrd album I have probably neglected, due to the shock of the planecrash. Saw Skynyrd on their maiden uk tour, probably 74 or 75 - now that sure was some band! Those were the days my friend!

Peace - I wsas there for that tour I think ... or maybe a slightly later one, but before the plane crash ... supported by Clover who were ace as well. (Was Huey Lewis with them .... no idea!!) but John McFee was, ace guitarist who I think ended up with the Doobie Bros.
Great gig, one of my first, certainly in the first half dozen, if i remember rightly.
Not listened to them for some considerable time - may be time to dig out the vinyl

@ peacemaker........

I don't really think its a "new" band........

As and when someone needed replacing - unfortunately thru death - they have been replaced

But they've had mega bad luck - and thats happened alot - so over the years and lets face it , its 23 years........ so the original "reunion" line up in 87 was pretty much Skynyrd....... and as times gone on........ Leon went and then Billy etc.........

I'm a big DC fan - but people say the original singer is best blah blah blah - i agree.......... but to say Brian is the "new" singer is a tad optimistic - makes it sound like he's been in the band 9 months.......... 30 Fuckin years - all credit to Mr Johnson!!!

I'm just glad that there is a decent band - with some original members and a "proper" connection to the originals - keeping what is my favourite bands music alive on the touring circuit........
