Wow! Another legend passes - seems like loads of musical giants are passing over recently.

He deserves a lot of credit for what he did with the pistols and beyond. The Manchester Free Trade Hall gig in '76 is probably one of the most important and influential events in music history. That was pretty much the catalyst for the Manchester music scene, Factory records, the Hacienda and much more. I can't imagine what Manchester would've been like today if it hadn't had that music scene.

Plus by bringing punk to the popular masses he saved music from the double-album prog-rock hell hole it was in at the time. Goodness knows what would've happened to music without the pistols. We'd probably all be listening to 45 minute songs about enchanted goblin wands with improvised duets between a flute player and a bloke in a cape playing a modular synth the size of a house.

So all I can say is, love him or loathe him, thanks for what you did Malcolm... though double dutch was a bit rubbish.

I agree
love him or hate him, ya gotta respect him. He put a foot up the arse of music, changing it for all of us.
RIP

It's really sad as I can't see who'll do it now. There's no more Tony Wilsons and Malcolm McLarens. I'd love situationlist nutter to unleash some truly mental music movement on everyone to take the smile off Simon Cowell's pearly white cakehole once and for all.

Somethings jumping in my shirt, buffalo girls, Double Dutch, madame butterfly...not to mention the pistols, upon release simply did not fit into the quo of their times...but in retrospect defined them.
sad sad day for the world.

Thought John Lydon was very gracious in his statement about MM's death, showed a bit of class rather than slag him despite the bad blood between them.

"For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that.

"Above all else he was an entertainer. I'll miss him and so should you"

Not really a big fan of Sex Pistols, but music has lost one of its greats. RIP Malcolm.
