Wow !! - What a Tough Crowd !!

What do you do when this happens ?

Friday night - turned up to open the show at a local pub . Everything looked set up for a great night . Good sized venue - good sized crowd , 2 other bands on similar in style to us .
But as soon as the first act (us) was introduced , I could tell the atmosphere was a bit flat . First song played - ended in near silence . 2nd song introduced - sweet child o mine - Audible groan from the punters - yeah , yeah weve heard it a million times before - and no , we dont care if you can play it spot on !! .. and so it went on ..I wouldnt go as far as to call it open hostility .. cant remember any heckling .. but quite a number of the crowd seemed to get their kicks from slagging the band rather than enjoying the music .
To be fair , our lads played out there set in their usual proffessional and energetic way , but I cant say it was an enjoyable evening .
We spoke about it to the promoters after , and he was impressed with us , and said the crowd are always like that .. I`m embarrased for them to be honest ..
I`m just pleased , that even at aged sixteen ,the lads have played over 20 gigs up to now , had some great reactions , and some fantastic nights . If it had been our first live experience , it could have shattered the bands confidence for good ..
I`m sure this has happened to most of you guys .. what do you do when this happens ..how do you try to get the crowd on your side ..ect .

I havent named the venue , it wouldnt be fair on the very nice promoters and staff , but if you really want to find out you will !!!
Cheers , Col .

Or your convinced in your own mind that your performance was up to scratch (and Im not suggesting it wasnt) then I wouldnt let it bother you, there are a few venues that where the crowd are like this (that we wont name) as long as you impressed the money man its a good gig !

Mr Grooveman
''as long as you impress the money man it's a good gig''...?????
Mate, that statement doesn't come across very well at all.....
Is that really how you see it...???

Col
I've said it a few times on here.....people are BORED with every band playing the same tunes every week, you can leave your set list on the wall for next weeks band, and the next, and the next.....
Give them something different, something to wake them up.....
Or was it the venue...?????
Some 'Pubs' try Live music but the locals (who think they own the place) don't take to Bands 'taking over THEIR pub'
Just my Humble opinion.....

Maybe i should rephrase, if you get a rebooking by the landlord that sees bands week in and week out then youve done OK,
some people go to gigs simply to stand at the back and tell their mates how much better they could do it, like in a lot of comedy clubs there are always harcore punters that are there to heckle the comedians, one venue we regulaly play at has a guy who slags off guitarists for haveing too many effects/ playing too fast/ playing too loud etc . yet hes there every week, if you get a rebooking and impress the landlord then,in my view youve done your bit, sure its great to come away from a gig having entertained the crowd,
at the end of the day, selling ale its what pubs are about. there are venues (and Ian from the Kerbcrawlers will back me up here) where there punters are determained not to enjoy the band and yet are there every single week buying ale. I hope i put my comment into context , however feel free to disagree, it what the forums all about

Yeah , its really hard not to be cynical isnt it . At the lads age , were more interested in entertaining the folks and building a fan base , and good reputation rather than making money out of it - we did get expenses , by the way .
The set included 5 of our own tunes and 2 covers . I suppose from the promoter and venues perspective the place was full , they sold plenty of ale - so they`de be happy . But from our point of view its not about taking the money and buggering off and we`ll see you next time . I think we need to think more about the venues we play , try and work out what the crowd wants , and decide if were going to get something positive out of it .

You Sir, are VERY RIGHT!
Same tunes, same oldies all the time. Rock was supposed to have balls, instead it seems like comfort zone attitude is the norm when it comes to build set lists, BORING indeed. My advice, get some fresh covers that nobody else has done, covers that will appeal to people of their age. There are plenty out there! Enter Sandman, Highway to Hell....Sweet Child o'Mine...done, done, re-done, and there are such a cliché for cover bands. Same old tunes = BORING and predictable set, no matter how well they get played. It is also true there are loadsa of boring punters who love to be entertained by boring songs.
On the other hand, pubs are NOT for original bands no matter how many covers you stick in. Crowds can be depressing and many of them don't know of bands outside the jukebox on one of the walls, sad but true.
There are other venues where these lads would go down quite well playing their original stuff and to people their age. Have they recorded yet?

INUENDO.....just had a listen to your myspace stuff.....Now I'm an old Punk, but your music sounds good to me, none of this 'caveman, grunting' shite.....sound more 'conventional' maybe 80's influenced Metal to me (not judging of course)
I know there are LOADS of metal events put on for bands just like yours, in Runcorn we have 'Monsters of Mayhem' nights once a month and there is a bar in town that have 'new' original Metal bands on a Monday night.....point is, Every decent sized town will have special nights to give new / original bands a chance.....and I'm sure there are enough Metal bands and fans in Bolton to warrant such events.
Good luck
Gary

Yeah - cheers Gary - like I said weve had some good gigs . Funny you should mention Bolton - we had a great gig at the Moses gate a few weeks back - supporting a GnR tribute act - not one from one here BTW . Just found it strange that a similar venue in a different town could produce such a different reaction - but thats folk for you, I suppose . Maybe Bolton folk are friendlier than us Prestonites !!!

It's the old story can't please em all, if one person comes and says you were great that's enough to keep going.

Quote Innuendo:

'I think we need to think more about the venues we play , try and work out what the crowd wants , and decide if were going to get something positive out of it .'

I wish you all the best dudes, just need to look for venues and gigs where your original stuff is the main course and people your age can come and see you. I've been listening to the tunes on myspace, great stuff indeed. Keep up the good work bearing in mind there's always room for improvement, always, get writing as many songs as you can, exercise your creativity. Keep it exciting and new to you more than anyone else, and with time you'll look back and listen to your old tunes, just to realise you've moved forward indeed. It feels great when people asks for a song you have written, doesn't it? One or maybe two covers per gig?, yeah, maybe but no more than that as it's the original material what matters.
Just, don't worry about pleasing people, or what people want. Play because it feels right to you, nevermind the public, be honest to yourselves first and foremost. All the best dudes.

Luis

Play to your strengths. A lot of bands go out of their comfort zone just to please their audiance and it stands out. You'll never please everyone but there is respect gained by being yourself. If you play well but they didn't like you...bollocks to them!

it can be tough when the crowd doesn't react - probably worse than booing! i think the best think to do is adopt the 'paid rehearsal' mindset, and just play as best as you can. that way, at least noone can say you haven't tried.

your original stuff sounds pretty good - like Gary from LGIT says, kind of 80's rock/metal influenced (and nothing wrong with that!)

If you pleased the people that booked you, then job done.

We played at a pub recently and the only people that showed their appreciation was a couple of musos who we met afterwards, the rest of the boozer were listening apparently but couldn't be bothered to put their drinks down for a couple of seconds. The landlady re-booked us and said the crowd really enjoyed you tonight. I was dying to say " well they've got a funny way of showing it" but you don't.

Good luck guys and go watching Asparagus now, they are a young band writing own stuff and doing covers - you'll learn off them, I promise,

Rick.

just my two penny worth iunnuendo and this is just my opinion mind you!

For a young kids band or a band in their early days I dont think a tough gig is such a bad thing!! Too many really top 'awesome' nights breeds complacency i reckon... If they have rebooked then you can always use it as a bogey man gig..."Remember lads its the xxxx on saturday and you know what they are like" concentrates the mind.

If they turn up and play tighter and better than ever before its job done... Its a barometer job cos the day you get the tough gig bouncing thats the holy grail acheived aint it?

Good luck

also-try and see (or talk to)bands like helvellyn2, decadenze or fury (uk)-they all started where you are now-with persevernce, dedication and determination they're all making their way to big things. keep the faith, put it as "one down for experience"-and that counts for such a lot!!

@ Piggery Bandana - wise words!! We went over a year before we had a truly bad gig (essentially cos the wags etc come to every gig, it always feels like the crowd is with us all night!), and we were fairly bloody shite when it happened! We even offered to take half the fee...... anyway, dark times - don't want to think about them anymore.....

You definitely learn from such things - think of it as having gotten your yellow belt with 2 orange tabs!!
