Poundering my thoughts

After Gary's tactful blog about Classic Rock and Country (at least its not me getting stick this week lol)I cant but wonder what is Classic Punk for me its not a classic Genre in say Indie but can understand where Gary is coming from.

People are all defending and getting irate when really the question is what is it all about?

I am very under educated in all forms of Punk due to my dad being a Santana/Led Zep/ Hendrix/ Black Sabbath etc disciple so I missed the boat as he hated it.

My perception of Punk was cockney freaks with Mohicans unable to sing or rap so just shouted loudly a cockney rhyme.
I know this is wrong but that was my perception growing up and I hated it for that .

Whether Classic Punk or Rock is a genre is open to debate. I think only Indie is classic it transformed a whole quarter of a century worth of music from 3 chords Rock to 2 chords Punk Indie is powerful and complicated at the same time.

Maybe Paul should include Classic Indie as well so us Indie warriors are not left out. Stone Roses to Oasis its all football so lets just genreise every music style.

For me its right to request this due to LGIT musical persuasion and there heritage of music but can we really change things with only 3 bands needing this section. There are no punk bands anymore so any band is gonna be classic as its a dying music genre imo.

To quote a great man ' FIshes are smelly like an engine run cold but to eat haddock it cant be true that a taste so nice was once an egg and music is the heart of every life soul'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock ... look under subgenres

no mention of Classic Punk there...

this gives punk a 6 year lifespan... so i would say punk is punk. as it doesn't seem to have a "classic" period

There are no Punk bands anymore?? I know you just want a reaction but theres loads of "classic" Punk bands still touring or have toured in last few years:

Sex Pistols
Stiff Little Fingers
Sham 69
Buzzcocks
Uk Subs
PIL
Angelic Upstarts
Anti Nowhere League
The Stranglers
Penetration
999

...to name a few...and ALL sold out venues.

Theres also plenty of bands like us and LGIT paying tribute to these sort of bands....with no shortage of gigs and theres definitely still an audience for it....you should have been at our gig last Fri...none of this 'Sheeple' shit as Gary calls it.

Yep it does exist.

As far as i know anything that is over 20 years old is classed as a classic.

you can get classic car insurance if the car is 20 years old!

so the "WHATEVERMOBILE" that you drive Hulk must be nearly up for it? haha

Please elaborate Outlaw...I may be wrong but are you saying classic Punk only exists in the hearts of those old enough to experience it?

I'd say "Punk" is "Punk" and doesn't need further clarification, I personally don't think it's a big enough genre to have need for a "Classic".

For example, the Covers LGIT plays are the standard bands you'd expect if someone said "punk covers band":
Buzzcocks (check),
Clash (check),
Dead Kennedys (check),
Sex Pistols (unfortunately check)
Stranglers (Check)

and then you have break off forms of punk from these 'godfather' bands, so can't understand what the need is. What the hell are the non-classic?

As LGIT pointed out in his rather poignant other blog, there are derivatives, but they have their own genre as they are a build on the original form.

So, well said Hulk.

The Outlaws "Classic Punk only REALLY exists in the heart of classic punks". That proves the point beautifully, even if not intended.

My last point is, would there be many pubs full of these "classic punk" people and does a "Classic Punk" band not want to broaden the minds of those of us who may not be either old enough or familiar with this genre.

nope, didnt say classic punk ONLY exists in the heart of those old enough to experience it....... I said only REALLY exists in the heart of CLASSIC PUNKS..............Classic punk exists alright the same as 50's rock n roll does...............but .............not quite the same is it?

I think there is a definite division between original punk as opposed to those that jumped on the band wagon later ( an some at the time ) but isnt that punk v new wave? but yea some of those punk bands should really have been in the new wave camp, then there is the new wave of punk bands.......starting to get confusing now

Its always a nightmare pidgeon holing music. Personally I'm a metal fan, or at least i was til about mid 80s, then as RR says - suddenly it was thrach, glam, etc all on the back of NWOBHM and old school heavy rock!!!
I grew up in a massive punk stronghold (huddersfield) and i can easily appreciate what is or could be classed as classic punk - 1975-85 really for me (finished with the Adicts)

This one will keep on rolling i guess

Viva la revolution!!

All the tartan wearing zippered spiky hairs at my school were into Adam and the Ants. They were considered punk around here without a doubt.

Classic-
Means something that is a perfect example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality.
Wikipedia

I'd say Classic Punk is a good description of the music some of the lads on here are playin.

Adam And The Ants were punk if you check out the first album Dirk Wears White Sox, then Adam got new band members in to go arty piraty pop. Punk as any other genre is different things to everyone. To me it was the early 80s anarchist punk, to some it was 76/77 Sex Pistols, Damned etc. If you go to America further back to mid and early 7os ther was New York Dolls, Ramones etc. Punk is one of the genres which never went away, along with a lot of others like Rock, Metal, Rap etc. 'classic' in any genre i.m.o. is the tracks that stood out and everyone remembers, whether from a few years ago or 30 or 40 years ago. Classic punk to me would be all the old favourites. not a genre exactly but classic songs from a genre. Just how The Sugar Bullets do. A classic rock band such as Dyehouse are playing classic songs from the rock genre. Long live Punk and Classic Punk ;)

Adam and the Ants were classic to me - came on the back of first wave of british punk, Car Trouble, Whip in my Valise from DWWS were great etc but in some ways, thier impact was similar to how metal/rock changed, with sub genres like glam and thrash. Kings of the wild Frontier brought AATA mainstream but was frickin quality - at the same time i was mad into motorhead, priest etc then came NWOBHM.

Is is worth trying to clssify genres so much?

If youre 40 years old or more - sabbath and Acdc are classic metal'

If youre 30 years old or more - nirvana are classic

If youre 50 or more Nirvana are new!!!!

I saw Deep Purple reunion at knebworyth and thought how can a band be getting back or still going after 25 years!!! Now i see bands like Slayer celebrating 25 years and accept im just frickin old!!!!

How long do we have to wait for this new Hendrix stuff to become classic..........or is it classic even though its fresh out the bag?

stuff thats been kept locked away is normally done for a reason - its shit! the new Hendrix stuff shags that right out of the water!!!! is it genuine or a really good tribute act?

post for tomorrow!!!

I suspect what a lot of you are forgetting is that the main reason for Gary LGIT wanting the new genre category is because you have bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Bowling for Soup, Offspring etc, etc, etc, all being called punk too. So in that respect, Classic Punk is definitely a legitimate distinction.

I can see a few attempted arguments here again - doesn't take long does it?!! To quote an oft-used phrase, that's 'just my own opinion'.

Adam ant was on the scene in London in 75/76 when the 'new' Punk bands were forming.....a lot of the the guys who failed the Pistols audition went on to be famous in their own right.....Billy Idol, Adam Ant (Stuart Goddard I think) Tenpole Tudor and others.....
The first 'Ants' made the brilliant album Dirk Wears White Socks but then Mr McLaren poached the band to form Bow-wow-wow so Mr Ant formed a new band and forged a new Image for a new era.....
I loved Kings Of The Wild Frontier and saw them live at the Royal Court in Liverpool but then they went all Goody 2 shoes and the Punk Fans dropped them.....
The first Punk wave of 76/80 was fantastic, then the second phase was not so good.....Garry Bushel manufactured OI bands.....
So with Punk 'Dead' I got into Heavy Metal but I always loved the 'classic' punk and still do. The Clash sound as fresh today as they did in the 70's and have influenced many modern bands.....

There were some stamps released by the Post Office to commemorate 'classic' album covers....London Calling (Clash 1979) was one of them.

70's punk is a 'classic' genre and stands out way above all the other shite associated with later so-called Punk bands.....

Music is a passion, maybe when you get to a certain age you stop taking in 'new' bands and stick to the older stuff you grew up with.....My dad still listens to Buddy Holly and The Beatles etc.
With some it's the deservedly titled 'classic' rock.....
With me it's 70's Punk...'Classic' Punk.

Mick 53 Degrees North
I'm a big fan of Bowling For Soup, I've got all their records and have seen them live on a few occasions.....cracking band.
Also Greenday, going to see them at Old Trafford soon.....
I've also seen Blink 182, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte (I've got teenage kids who are into all these bands)
They deffinately have a Punk vibe and it's obvious who their influences are.....I think they're great but they're NOT what I'd call a Punk band in the sence of Sex Pistols etc.....

# Posted by 53 Degrees North - 28/04/2010, 00:37 (GMT)

that's my point - if you wikipedia these bands, and loads of others from recent times, they get labelled 'punk', but obviously not the same punk you play - so for that reason alone, the classic label is warranted!

I don't think there is such a thing a classic punk. There is the original 70s punk and after that it splintered into various sun-genres. The ultimate punk band were the Clash because they didn't stand still. They brought in various influences while retaining the punk attitude. The term 'Classic Punk', like 'Classic Rock' makes me think of 'safe' and 'conservative', punk should never be that. The Sanity Clause are punk!
