Over taken Teenage Kicks!
Sex on fire has taken the top spot in the Set List Chart, over taking Teenage Kicks by a good margin. Discuss!
I hate that song. SO much.
I hate that song too...and all the chavs that sing along with that chorus
I fuckin' love it. :) (yooooooooooo-oooooouuuuuuu..............yer sexxxx is onnn fiiiiirrreeee!)
hows it work? is a cross section of all band members set lists taken and added up? if so there are one or two suprises in there but its a great popularity guide
Garbage tune, their old stuff is soooo much better.
Funny, when we started playing it last Summer, I thought we were in the minority...til I joined NWB in October , only to discover everyone else and his dog play it too. Time for a rethink. Shame it goes down so bloody wellllll.
Their old stuff is shit hot, got all the albums.
Chris is right, it does go down bloody well, we play it but don't like it particular, Rick. Chris have The Windmill been in touch?
not fussed on either song but you got to admit SOF's popularity. Prefer Molly's Chamber for a KOL song, and got to admit I've been very very surprised by their popularity with the younger people - better them than the X Factor tripe and stuff! Willow ps.. younger people does NOT mean under 40!! basterds! :0)
Horses for courses.....but this is for another ovine/human crosbreed.....
yep we do both sex on fire and use somebody - both go down a treat!
we thought we were in a minority too when we introduced it. it goes down an absolute storm though, and all of us actually really like it.we've just introduced molly's chambers too and have considered use somebody.dunno what's not to like about it - it's a well written anthem destined to become a classic!Mick
use somebody is at bit more difficult on the drum rythmn front so more interesting to play
we played until very recently with drum tracks which I used to make up on my pc (and damn fine they were too if I say myself!) - and though I had no problems playing it with them, I am finding the intro to sex on fire difficult with a real drummer!(Just in case she's watching in - I blame myself, not you!!)Mick
The only sex on fire I like is when I thomas the tank too hard and the friction sets my pubes on fire.....hee hee
that's not a good image dude!no offence intended though.Mick
its the I PREDICT A RIOT of today, will last at least another two years then there will be another song [ or old revamp ] its ok and yes i do it[ but only when requested ]
BY ODIN'S MIGHTY ROD--mr nwb!!! this site needs more CANESTAN!!!!! ;-/
Yep we do it too and have done since it came out. I predict a riot is still played by us too. So what sue me.
Can't see us ever covering it, have heard plenty who do thoMark
popular songs are popular because lots of people like them.we do i predict a riot too - it goes down really well, though I have noticed less of a reaction for it recently than before, so maybe it is time to hang that one up.Mick
Sssshhhh Mick ST might hear you. I still like playing it. Aiden
lol! I like playing Riot as a bassist, it has a pretty interesting bass part. And it's quite a funky song when you get into it.Bring it on ST I say!!!!!!!! I have a new weapon to counter his 'sword of sarcasm' - my 'rifle of ridicule'!Mick
i would offer an opinion-"i predict a riot", along with "S o F" goes down very well with an audience that have had a few ermmm-bevvies?-and can, therefore, sing along to lyrics that the macho men can shout (i p a r)-slur?- and the general audience can make lewd gestures to (s o f)?
Rifle of ridicule...ha ha ha I like it. Aiden
I Predict A Riot has had its time. It's gone past being a cool song to being a cheesey song and most audiences are bored of hearing it. I know I'm bored of playing it. I can't say Sex On Fire is in that position yet. That's still got some mileage.
Agree with Socialtornado on that. Still got some mileage.Especially up here in Cumbria where it`s viewed as cutting edge ha ha. @Rick- Yes thanks mate. gig booked.
People still like it though. Are you the drummer who said lets do Mustang sally at our last gig.. Now that is f*cking cheese!!!!!!!!
i wonder iffen the song would have it's "mass appeal" if the hook was "this heart is on fire"?
Spot on ST. Does anyone on here play Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition? Someone needs to. Infact I'm half tempted to form a cover band just to do so.
Is he bollox Viva. Mustang Sally i rest my case!!!!!
Gaviscon would have loved it Viking!
@ whatever-gets the women ermmm-dancing?-though, aiden?and yep-there y'go-point made-all it is is a commercially driven advertisement for the pharmaceutical companies!!!!
touche Mr Tornade!I actually agree with you, but I think Sex on Fire will be around a good while yet.@Viva la Coldplay - that is a corking tune! Couldn't remember it but i'm watching it on youtube right now.I may just suggest this one to the lads - not sure Jay can wail that high though!!Mick
You lot play what you wan't ...I don't care anymore cos I'm in a 'Classic' Punk band now......
Mustang Sally - now that IS cheese!I used to play that in a band with Adam from Steelfield years ago. It was cheesy then - and I was one of the 'female' backing singers... man we laughed about that!!@LGIT - are you saying the whole 'Teenage Kicks' debate was a thinly veiled cry for 'Classic Punk' help?!!Mick
Would rather eat my own ears than play that bollocks.
Bloody hell Mick you turncoat :0( Lol Gary...got there in the end eh. @Viking....good point i will have a rethink. lol
@whatever-and, (see comment above yours-asp now)) "from the mouths of the young there springs forth wisdom"!! lmho!!
@53DN Do it lad! Will fit in nicely in your set next to Embrace - Ashes, another cracking tune.@viking Great point made there. Using the word 'sex' in the song title not only gives that song the mass appeal it otherwise wouldn't have had, it is pretty much the sole reason why KOL now sell-out stadiums and have their own tribute acts. Odd, the way things work out.
@Whatever - I just re-read ST's post, and i'll revise my comment.I do think Riot is getting a little cheesy now, but it's still a classic song, and although I have noticed it doesn't get quite the reaction it used to now, there's still a fair amount of punters that do the whole point-your-finger-in-the-air-and-shout-'choon!' thing to it, and I still enjoy playing it!Mick (should have been a politician!!)
Mick No mate, the TK debate was when I used to play in an ordinary Punk band.....but now I'm in a 'classic' Punk band I'm above all this childish time-wasting piffle.....
PMSL Gary..... Man of the people. The voice of reason now.
@Viva - I am going to suggest it for definite. Just finished listening to it - it is a great tune.also, are you suggesting that if I rename one of our original tracks to, say, 'Nothing to SEX for', we'll be instant rock gods and a legion of copycats will follow?Cos if you are, i'm totally on board :)also ditto Whatever about Gary!Mick
@viva la coldplay-maybe-BUT!!! have you read the rest of the lyrics? total gobbledygook-and-yep they might be "filling stadiums " on the strength of it NOW-how much longer i wonder?-and what will they have to come up with next to better it?? and-i make no apologies for this-but i would feel rather uncomfortable if i wrote a song that had masses of chavs prancing around,p*ssed out of their heads, solely on the use of the word "sex" in another wise insipid tune!!!
and, of course-popularity is not always a measure of quality!!!
@vikingWell their older stuff has alot more substance. Have a listen to 'Milk'. Hopefully now they've made their millions they'll get back making decent music.Right about the lyrics though. Funnily enough, I did a disco a few weeks ago and the guy whose party is was asked if I could play SOF and him and his mates sing along to it because it's their favourite tune. The ONLY words they knew were "oooooh your sex is on fire". It's almost as though KOL chemically engineered a song they knew would instantly click with common or garden normal folk, and what has happened isn't the release of a hit single, but a wildly successful yet sinister social experiment. You head it here first!@53DN You bet mate. I'll have my 20% when you're ready pal. Just make sure the copycats are up to date on their PRS licenses or there'll be hell to pay!
@viva-yeah-my friend sandwich slayer rates their earlier tunes-always a shame when a band succumbs to the commercial pressures? "social experiment"? lol!! shame it only seems to work on the socially inadequate!! (what? controversial? moi? nahhh!!!-people'll be going around saying "that viking don't like "kiss" next!! )lmho!!
Dont listen to Aid he was that drunk at the last gig ST wanted to play Mustang fucking Sally and Aid went for the longest piss in history. I even had to talk on the mike what is the world coming too????Hulkamania for president of the Y club
They play all that stuff in my local....great when your pissed with yer mates but personally couldn't play those sort of tunes in a band....do my nut in.
Hulk Get Aid some radio gear so he can take his axe to the bog and keep playing....would anyone even notice?????
It is the no.1 request we have..and consequently it is the no.1 song request we turn down. It's a terrible song quite frankly, surely it's not worth playing something so bad just to please a crowd! That's just my view point though...
20% !! i'll go to 15 and that's as far as I can go (feel like Dragons Den yet?!!)and I hope there isn't a Kiss-related backlash starting! Simmons, Stanley and co can do no wrong in my wonky eyes!!Mick
Re Mick's comment - "we played until very recently with drum tracks which I used to make up on my pc (and damn fine they were too if I say myself!) - and though I had no problems playing it with them, I am finding the intro to sex on fire difficult with a real drummer!" That's a very good point and I wonder how many of you who play it actually play it "properly" (definition of properly here is "exactly like the recording") - Now I've never tried it but it always sounds to me like one of those where the riff is "off kilter" to the rhythm and the vocal. I wonder even if KOL play it to the recording ... will go and have a look on youtube! Willow
its a great song, i love the album, i like the fact that kings of leon have become popular due to the sheer quality of their songs and calebs got a superb distinctive voice , rock on!
Chances are this blog is a 'set up' and I aint biting.....
I need to clarify my comment. I DO hate the song, but that doesn't invalidate it. Music either hits your ear right or doesn't. I have to switch most indie style music off. Same with Reggae. This doesn't make it bad. It just means my tastes are different.
Yep - KOL play it live as the recording (not a surprise as they feckin wrote it) But the two bands on here that I can find recordings of on their myspace or website don't come within a million miles of the intro and verse riff/vocal/rhythm. (and NOT in a "this is the way we do it revision") Don't know what that means - don't even know why i'm posting, but I am. Its better than cleaning golf shoes ready for next week! Willow
Dudes, we play both riot and sex on fire, and always blow the venue apart with both without fail, it's not how old tunes are, it's how you play them!!!! peace and great gigin to all ;)
We played "Riot" for a while. A metallised version. We called it I predict a leaflet campaign.Who the fuck is Smeaton anyway???
when we did it with drum tracks, by necessecity you have to have a hihat or similar playing behind intros so you know when to come in! so I used to count it from when the geet started - just can't get it with no count!i am a failure as a muso.....Mick
everything goes full circle...................or do we need to buck the system?
mick + willow - try startin counting on 4 when the guitar comes in rather than 1...i know what you mean its a bugger to count but this is defo the way! difficult to explain but the 1st low guitar note in intro is on 4th beat of first bar..av a dabble n let me know what you think!
dont let the side down ricardo...u'l make people think drumming is easy! u doin ur own version then!??
pah...only to beginners rick - ur far too experienced now lmao!!
ps its the brass band training that makes me count beats in bars etc...instilled in my rythmic roots (and i aint talking hair!!)lol x
really? - ithought it was only once, and that was with a different line up...5yrs ago xx well u'l see us again at charity night (mite just play KOL!)then we've time off cos guitarist away so no excuses u'l be first on my list!!
yeah i spose ur right..i still owe pete for that!! see you the 14th!!!
@Karen re - "mick + willow - try startin counting on 4 w..... etc " Cheers for that Karen, I'm sure you're right but as I said I've never tried it and nor will I ever have to hopefully! :0) Willow
"# Posted by Shine (karen) - 29/04/2010, 01:06 (GMT) ps its the brass band training that makes me count beats in bars etc..." Same here. It's also why I don't turn my guitar up louder than the rest of the band. It's ALL about the balance.
yeh willow - i didnt think it would be ur cuppa tea somehow but glad ud noticed the technicality of it whilst listening! sign of a good tune..when it appears easy on the listening ears then causes havoc when u try n cover it!
I predict a riot? I predict Meatloafs new one Los Angeles loser or summat to start climbing up soon........been rattlin about my head for days now, cheesy but catchy as fook
@Karen - I know thats how we start it when using pre-baked drums, but when we play it now, I get waylaid listening to the guitar and forget the counting thing every time!!It's almost like when i'm listening to it, my brain rearranges it so the guitar bit 'sounds' right (not explaining this very well at all am I?!)Mick
haha @mick53 - i know its still the only song after all this time where both myself and the bass player actively nod our heads counting out the intro!! quite funny we joke about it now but STILL have to do it! 4,1+2,3,4,1+2,3,etc..pmso!!!!
Well, I can't stand the bloody song. I find the lyrics embarrassing (and I'm used to singing lyrics such as 'Squeeze my lemon til the juice runs down my leg' - The Lemon Song) and thankfully there's no pull within the band for us to do it. I'm not a big fan of the Kings of Leon, so that doesn't help. More power, though, to the bands on here that do it well - it must go down a treat if it's so popular (and I haven't used the term 'sheeple' in this!) Just wanted to rant about the song, really, I'd drone on at me mrs about it but she's not interested either. Time for my injection. Louis PS I love doing Teenage Kicks.
Louis.... I REFUSE to bite....I've found my 'happy' place.....
it's more like 4, 1, 2, 2, 3, shite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lolsomeone should do a Teenage Kicks / Sex on Fire mash-up..........Mick
hahaha! x
ok mr nwb-how about -1,000 cr(a)p points to ANYONE who can claim to understand/explain the lyrics (except for the obvious "hook" and even THAT is somewhat ambiguous!!!), p.s. damn good blog this-good exchange of views, calmly put and with humour, also, in my view, hilighting the underlying dichotomy all musos face regarding maintaining "artistic integrity" and commercially driven imperatives. love it!! ;-D
it has all been rather civilised this one hasn't it?!!what went wrong.........lol!Mick
@53 degrees north-yeah-have been waiting for the grenades to be thrown-fortunately...??? still reckon those "1,000 crp points" are safe, though! ;-D
haha. no good asking me to explain it - i'm just a bass player!!Mick
@53 degrees north-lmho,mick !!! -i reckon it would take the combined talents of a group of "philadelphia lawyers" to even start to make sense of them-even i couldn't do it on my way home from the crickies on a saturday night and, at that time, i'm FLUENT in "gobbledygook"!!!:-D
i wonder if i read the lyrics to my 2 boys a line at a time they could translate it?....Mick
@53 degrees north-lmho- probably, mick-but YOU might be slightly embarressed as they try to "translate" this bit, though? "The dark of the alley, the breaking of day The head while I'm driving, I'm driving"- wtf is that all about????
it's about the nicest thing a girl can do for her man is what it is pmsl!!Mick
Karen from Shine is talking to her "imaginary Friends" on this blog, I'm getting worried for the shift worker ! - scroll back till you see 6 of her comments in a row, Rick.
I really hope she goes and sees the Doctor soon, Get well soon Karen, Rick.
deleted comments on this blog? surely not - it's just so nice!!Mick
RICARDO 45's - you just dont want everyone else to know that it was YOU chatting me up at that unearthly hour, and that originally your comments were in between mine that i shall not be deleting, just for the memories!! love ya loads...cant wait til our next sesion xxxxx OOPS - were we sposed to be keeping it secret??
SCANDAL alert!!!!!!Lets have a biggest outrageous rumour blog!! lolMick
pmso...he mekka me look an arse...i returna la complimenta!
@53 degrees north- "it's about the nicest thing a girl can do for her man is what it is pmsl!!"-okaaaaaay-in that case -shouldn't the verse be-:- The dark of the alley, the breaking of day The head while I'm driving, I'm driving"- here comes a lamp post, straight through the car, there go the airbags, now you're biting me hard!!!! ???? :-D
i'm going to feed those lyrics to jay!! excellent work Viking!!Mick
@53 degrees north-pmsl, mick! however- THAT is going to hurt in the morning?? heh heh!!!
