Musical Tastes - Can you be 'cured' ?!?!?

Just out of interest (Jamie Cullum post made me think). Which Music is not your cuppa..why?

Ok so you don't Like Jazz, can't quite understand Reggae or don't understand the fuss about Punk...

I consider myself to have a very, very broad musical influence - ABBA to Zappa. But...

House / garage / Dance / Hardcore / techno / Trance - Just does not sugar me 'brew' at all. Plus it's not 'live' music. Maybe you need to drop a 'tab' to ultimately get it? If it is playing in the background I don't even notice it's there!

Irisih traditional - penny whistle, bodhran, fiddle. Plenty to offer but does nothing....

I think there are other genre's but these 2 really have the same sensual effect on me as eating a Cream cracker.

BUT if anyone can convince me what I'm missing....

So what can you not get with ? Is it a Personality / Culture / Background thang?

We are mainly musician's here and I have been a great believer that if you don't embrace as much music as possible then your missing out. But I think everyone must have some type of music that does not come across to them.

I used to play Flute and Trombone many many moons ago before I got into Rock and Metal, but I think that's where I got my love for dynamics, expression and passion being embedded within the music itself.
I loved the idea that every classical suite was telling a story through each part of the orchestra.

Hence my love for long complicated metal and rock songs...ie metallica, dream theater etc etc It also explains why I dislike the Metallica black album sooo much....bloody pop album pmsl

A majority of music that I just cannot listen to, to me, just doesn't express anything meaningful to me.

This is just my opinion before I get flamed

The three big sellers in this country do nothing for me at all :

Pop : is just purely written to please as many people as possible to sell as many copies as possible
Indie : Just comes across as bland IMO
Dance : pointless

Showaddywaddy? Excellent!!!

I don't like gangsta (c)rap or much so-called r'n'b (what a bastardization of that genre all the current crop of songs is!), but occasionally something will come along that takes my fancy. For instance, i'm quite partial to a bit of Eminem.

A good song is a good song, but i'd stay away from those genres all day long.

dont care who its by or what genre etc..non of that matters.

With you tho scott on the orchestral stuff (and jazz in my case)..the dynamics etc..this music is the foundation of everything we have today so if you dismiss it - ur denying urself the opportunity to find your musical roots.

The ONLY sorts of music that I absolutely can't stand any of is Big Band Swing/Jazz, and the Crooner ballads. Almost all other music I can find something in there that I enjoy in a few songs at the very least.

So, as well as the music I play, I can also appreciate the groovey basslines on some pop eg Moloko, somo of Wagner's ring cycle is ace (and not that different from proggy metal), I don't mind some folk music (more the lyrics than the music), some jazz fusion I don't mind, same for some death/grind metal eg Nile's blend of death metal and middle-eastern motifs and instrumentation. I don't mind some Beach Boys and Crowded House for the vocal harmonies, and I don't mind some of the more inventive dance music eg Aphex Twin, Roni Size. Even some hip-hop, again only the funny/inventive stuff eg De La Soul.

Peace, Jon

going slightly off tangent, but i cant stand lofi stuff but kids today seem to love it, ie playing music through mobile phone speakers -AAGGHHH!!! put the headphones at least - it sounds worse quality than dial-a-disc!! (people under 35, Google it)... and on top of that , they always listen to dance stuff or worse still, black gangster rap - again, i dont get 99% off those genres either. All that stuff about hoes? whats that all about?...one minute they're shooting each other, next minute they're gardening....

Jazz is the basis for most of today's modern music. i think if you know what each genre represents and meant to the people of that time, then you build a respect for it. Swing was introduced as an 'escape' for people in WW2 and early Jazz came from Black Blues musicians who felt unfairly treated during the swing era! Every genre has a history and almost certainly gonna find the best artists right at the root of the history.

No doubt, there's a lot of crap out there that have jumped on the Bandwagon and i think these people just spoil it for the real people behind the genre.

there's quite a few artists out there that deserve a lot of credit for the stuff that they have done

the likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis,Herbie Hancock, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Sex Pistols, Metallica, Grandmaster Flash, The Smiths, Abba, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder.

probably some i missed out but all genres are really great when u go back to the roots and understand what they were tryin to do

Drum Bloke,

Who knows? But thank God we don't all like the same stuff.

A lot of it is down to conditioning. My son has got into a lot of the same music as me cos he listens to it in the car and round the house. Now he's becoming more independent he's realising there's more stuff out there and he's getting into music his mates like, stuff that MTV spews out. It's interesting to see his tastes change.

I like and listen to music now, in my late 30s, that I never thought I'd be into. I'm just as likely to put Radio 3 or Classic FM on in the car as I am to listen to me fave Zeppelin cds.

I suppose it's called getting old.

Not very romantic to be belting out Holidays in the Sun while making beeyoodiful lurve....

Do you even 'do' romance? I bet you're a big softy inside.

There's certain stuff I've never really warmed to but I wonder if that's because I've not properly sat down and listened to it? Urban music is probably the genre I least like, but it's also the least explored avenue of my music. Then again, I think "Fear of the Black Planet" is one of the best albums ever made. I can't stand modern R&B though, that stuff is tosh - urban music's answer to MOR indie and rock (e.g. Snow Patrol) if you ask me. Bling culture's just awful too but quite funny that people are that sad and materialistic.

Dance's problem is that it's become far too set in it's ways and formulaic - partly down to how easy many sequencing packages are to get into, partly as the scene is nearly 30 years old and partly because it seems lots of the people making it have limited musical ability so just recycle the same ideas (either that or labels just want nice, easy music). There's some amazing dance music, Orbital, The Orb, The Beloved, KLF, early Prodigy, Future Sound of London - great music! Happy hardcore I can't tell if it started out as a joke, a mistake (pilled up DJ playing 33 rpm records at 45) or just something that sounds awesome when you've had a "vera" (to quote Mr C) - I can't comment myself but plenty of glow-stick waving nutters seem to really like it!

Jazz can be trying at times, I love some of it but then some of the more experimental stuff is unlistenable for me. I draw the line at "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis, anything further down the road of insanity and self-indulgence just doesn't appeal to me.

Accent-pop (e.g. Arctic Monkeys, Kate Nash, Ting-Tings etc) is a pet-hate - I don't know why. In the case of Ms Nash, possibly as she's been born with a silver spoon in her mouth and pretends to be "one of us".

Probably what I least like in music is bland, treading water, MOR stuff designed purely to get played on Radio 1 - never doing anything new, exciting, risky or experimental. Coldplay, Keane, Snow Patrol, Oasis (post 1995) are incredibly guilty of this and obviously anything that's been remotely near the lofty trousers of Simon Cowell.

I, like a lot of others, don't really get Dance music, don't really appreciate the really heavy dub reggie stuff, but, you've got to realise that some kinds of music aren't really meant to be listened to .... clue in the question ..Dance music .. I bet with a few large Js the dub stuff is uber cool!!

So i think we have to temper our opinions with circumstances .. i.e. you're over 16 - then the charts (pop) aren't FOR you .. yes you may like the odd couple of tunes but you've had your day!

Got to say tho - following up from CatDog - I've tried and tried but can't get The Smiths ... just can't!! Give me a welsh male voice choir anyday!!

Rap, apartfrom the crossover with rock music, eg rage against the machine I don't seem to be able to get into it

jazz, there are many types. I think I like jazz that has the blues crossover, this is one genre of these that I'm most likely to get into, and when i do it'll be stuff like Ella and Duke and guitar jazz like Al Di Meola, Wes , Pat Metheny,Robben Ford etc

Northern Soul something I wanna explore

Country is something I wanna get into more, I hate that twee sickly sweet country like tammy w etc but the real good stuff with the vocal harmonies and tasty guitar kicks ass. If somebody could recommend some classic country must have albums I'd love to know

dance, I like 80s and 90s dance classics, and the odd trance tune here anx there but a lot if the stuff up to date they play in clubs is garbage, I like certain talented standout dance groups like Moby, Prodigy, Massive Attack etc

black/death metal, the severe grunting stuff, it's just too much for me can't find enough melody there to draw from, pantera and slayer is as heavy as I go

I like most music as long as it's well done and there is something I can appreciate in its conception for e.g. the music, the lyrics, the musicianship, the production etc

There is no genre I really despise, just certain aspects of it. For example I love soul, funk and Motown but don't like modern r n b or dance.

I like some of the bands from the 80s or certainly some of their tunes, I like the odd song by metallica but I don't really like them as a band because he can't sing IMHO of course.

I love some crooner stuff, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole. I don't like trad Jazz but quite like bebop

I like some blues and other stuff I find boring. I like Hendrix but after 3 or 4 tunes he bores me to death.

I love what is referred to as Classic Rock, Sabbath, Rainbow, Purple etc but can't stand led Zeppelin. I like the odd tune by Rush and Yes but overall I couldn't listen to an albums worth

I like Floyd a lot and can listen to them all day as long as it isn't the early Barrett stuff which I do not like at all. I like the odd tune by Camel and some Collesium 2.

I like The Smiths, The Stone Roses and James. I don't like The Artics,Radiohead, Coldplay etc

I like some Keane even though I am a guitarist. Their songs have good hooks.

I love the Pistols, The Clash, The Buzzcocks, 999, The Damned but can't stand Sham 69, The Exploited,

For me music is about the tune. I either like it or dislike it based on that and not the genre, I can listen to Abba and Chic and enjoy it as much as Floyd, Rainbow or the Clash

All music genre's have good stuff and bad stuff. I like what UI like and what I don't like I skip

There are very few musical genres that I dislike wholesale. Reggae, Manc beat, Drum & Bass readily come to mind.

It's specifically timbres, tones and frequencies that put me off. If something hits my ear wrong I'll never get "cured" of it. It's not a choice. It's akin to a physical condition.

For instance I'll reach for the off switch within seconds of hearing Axl Rose. His voice makes me cringe. I like a fair portion of his songwriting, but can't listen to it because of that shrill, nasal barrage.

I'm not too bothered about it though. For all the music I can't listen to there are a million and one songs I can, so it's all good.
