A Sad Farewell from the Welly for now...

Posted By : Wellington Hotel | Comments : 52

Please read on ....

It is with a heavy heart and a tear in my eye that I have to let you all know, that as of the 1st of June, all bands are cancelled.

This has been one of the longest and hardest decisions that me and Darren have ever had to make. But times are hard, custom is not what it used to be and we have a young family to support. And although we love having live music at our venue, we can no longer afford to keep going with it.

We would like to think that in the future we can maybe look at bringing bands back in slowly, so hopefully you haven't seen the last of us just yet. However for the foreseeable future we will be a band free zone :-(

To all the bands on this site that this will affect, we apologise whole heartedly.

And to everyone on this site, we thank you for your support over the last 8 months.

We have enjoyed all the bands that have played here and will hopefully now have the chance to travel out occassionally to see some of the bands that we would have liked to have seen.

We wish the very best of luck to all of you and thank you again for your support.

Donna & Darren

A sad day indeed guys but its not "forever", its "just for now"! Make sure you keep in touch, if only to take the piss on here!!
Venues like the Welly and management like Donna & Darren are very few and far between. It was a pleasure to play there and we'll look forward to supporting them in the future... whenever that may be!

All the best,
John

Kipper? Khaki? Kuwait?

@ Donna, never had the pleasure, but followed your antics on here and always sad to see a venue close it's doors to the wonderful world of Live Music. Here's hoping you get up and running again soon.

It's a shame and we witnessed your plight last week. I really hope it's not the end as you and Darren made us really welcome and the few that were in obviously enjoy your venue. Good luck for the future

Hi Donna dal'in,

After speaking to you and Darren on this very topic not long back I know how this has to be gut wrenching decision for you both!
Fear not , it's not the end of the world and not absolute end of having bands on at your place!
things can change week by week in the licencing trade!
Most importatly of all is how many friends you've made from all the bands that have had the honour to play for you!
You're a great couple and well respected and I for one hope to see you out and and about at the gigs wherever they are!

@Dalek, fair enough, you collect all the gear, load it up, get us and the gear to the venue, buy all our beers, pack up and load up the gear, take us all for a keeebab, then take us all home and unload the gear and we will consider doin the gig for free !

I just don't understand it.
A venue is struggling, yet none of you will help it by reducing your fee, even though you say you don't do it for money.

At least you'd keep live music going there, so it wouldn't be a struggle to build it up when they start doing it again.

It just proves once and for all that you're all just in it for the money.

Don't want to get this blog into trouble ... BUT ... my first thought on reading this blog was something along the lines of "I wonder if a few of the bands who've been booked regularly by The Wellie or the people who run it (and there appears to be quite a few) would be prepared to do a night for exes (real exes - petrol money, say £50, and a few beers) so they could continue a music night say once a month" 6 bands would only have to do 2 gigs in a year and this MAY contribute to keeping a venue open and alive.

No flaming please - it was a genuine thought - if you don't agree don't be nasty!! eeeeek!!

willows suggestion was a sensible one, yours was just an attempt to cause an argument.

why dont you suggest donna and darren give away free beer to all the punters? they've invested time and money in their business - so the bands have invested time and money in their hobbies.

i actually agree with Willow - you, however, have once again proved what a total cock you are

Hang on a minute guys, it's not just about playing for reduced fees or even for free...the fact is live bands haven't worked for this particular venue ie, brought extra punters/business to the pub, and that's no disrespect to Donna & Darren.

You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

I suggested a few months ago that the bands from NWB should give something back to the pubs that book them on a regular basis by way of a Charity day - bands playing for free and supported by NMB members. The pubs I mentioned included The Wellington Hotel but no one ran with it.

In the meantime, Dave Trig and myself organised one for the Hindley Arms which was hugely successful for The Bands, The Venue and the charity and gave the locals and NWB members who attended the event, a cracking day out,

Rick.

ps, any takers? ( including DLG )

Too late. If I had my way, every post back to the one just before Dalek entered would be deleted as it detracts from the original blog.

Cheers to you all for your continuing support for us.

As for DLG leave him/her? to it, he/she obviously doesn't have full contact with the real world, as if he/she did he/she wouldn't make such rediculous suggestions. He/she already knows that we don't expect anyone to play for free including a band which he/she may possibly be connected with??

I have only once used the phrase 'struggling' to one person which was the wrong way to put the situation. So to make things clear the pub is not struggling, we are mearly cutting the huge losses that are occuring from having bands on from our business. (you know who you are and I think I do too now??)

So all comments will remain posted as this all seems very constructed to me :)

p.s CLS no more pictures of Davros please, he really scares me :(

We were booked in at The Wellington soon and were gutted to have lost yet another venue. I'm sure Donna & Darren did their best and I'm gutted for them too.....I hope things pick up for them and maybe in the future they can attract enough punters to justify paying our extortionate fees BUT how can anyone compete with the likes of ASDA selling beer at 50p a can.....I posted a blog early this year expressing my fears for 2010 and unfortunately I'm being proven right.....We've had 7 SEVEN venues close down on us this year already.....
Maybe the bands aren't good enough to attract people...?????
Maybe people are bored with too many bands playing the same old tunes....?????
Maybe the pubs have priced ordinary people out (£3.00 a pint)
Hundreds of reason why this is happening.....
Either way, it's getting tougher to succeed in this game.
Good luck to us all and be the best you can be....only the strongest will survive.

I don't think a 'free' gig is the answer.....they need to attract more people....you could play for free and still play to an empty house....although If I'm free I would come to support this great gesture.....

Without intending to spark controversy...

We used to play a pub in Accrington every wednesday night (yes, some of you may be able to place me quite quickly). We did this for nothing (not strictly true as we put a "tips jar" on the bar that'd haul in over £40 most nights) and, although I hear what Donna says (and thanks for the gigs we did at the Welly Donna, you and Darren were great hosts) about not expecting bands to play for nothing we had a kind of rationale for this.

Firstly we didn't have to pay to rehearse, OK we had to get the gear there but we would have to do that no matter whether rehearsing or gigging. Secondly we got gig tight - I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes that rehearse all you like, doing it in front of people is very different. Thirdly we had a hard core of people (some actually continue to turn up at gigs from Tod to Manchester via the Welly) which for an originals band trying to develop a following is quite important and finally we got to test new material out on a regular clientele who could use the thumbs up/down approach to make sure that as songs developed they did so with an element of feedback.

Playing for free, or putting bands on for no fee, may not be everyone's idea of fun or fair play but I thought it may be of use to put forward a slightly perspective - OK some points perhaps only applicable to originals bands.

My limited experience on/exposure to this forum suggests I'll get some stick for this post, but hey, if you have a different opinion then whatever, it worked for us...
