at The Old Market Tavern, Altrincham
With a large range of bands to choose from last night, myself, my bro (Iain) and John decided none of us wanted to drive - I drove on Friday to dep for The Kicks, and last night we were celebrating Iain's birthday. So we decided to stay local and chance a band at The Old Market Tavern. I mentioned that I'd been on line and The Plot were playing, and John replied that he'd seen them before. What were they like? To which John replied with the understatement of the year "I seem to remember they were not bad"!
We arrived to an already pretty packed pub, and the band sounchecking 'We Rock'.
When they then went on stage about 15 mins later, the singer announced that tonight they would be performing a tribute to 'the late, great Ronnie James Dio'. And that's exactly what they did - all night. Basically a classic three piece line-up of guitar/singer, bass and drums, they also had a very talented young lady helping out with occasional keyboards and backing.
Let me tell you - these guys do indeed rock.
Holy Diver, We Rock, Rock 'n' Roll Children, Hungry for Heaven, Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, Starstruck, Neon Knights, Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Children of The Sea,Country Girl, Die Young - the tunes just kept coming!
I managed to catch up with the guys (and gal) in the break:
Howie on guitar and vox
Lyndon on bass
John on drums
Nicole on keys
Turns out they normally play a mix of 'classic rock and original stuff and had only decided to do the RJD trib last week (and Nicole hasn't played with the band for three years!) and had never played Sixteenth Century Greensleeves as a complete band before!
The P.L.O.T. actually stands for the primeval Leviathan Of Truth, and you can find them on myspace, although they are not on this site (!) and they are based around Crewe
After a second set of nearly an hour and a half, they encored with Stargazer and (ofcourse) Long Live Rock and Roll and (to their credit) wouldn't be drawn back on even with the whole pub shouting 'we want more'.
A truly incredible band - I cannot urge you to see them enough.
I have seen a lot of bands recently, and none of them have been less than talented and highly entertaining, but these guys were just that little bit special.
I'm going to have to use that word:
AWESOME
