Just bought one but it's shit???

Can anyone give me any guidance on how to get these things to sound right?
I may have bought a duffer?
I get massive drop in body and the tone goes tinny and overdives on clean ???
I've been trying to adjust it with all thats on it and even the little screw in the sender but It doesn't seem to make a differance?
Anyone clued up on what this could be?
