Waiting for the Punch Line: Extreme. What happens when you put a band in a studio with free rein.

I actually like Van Halen 3, as it goes...

I hear what you're saying about Be Here Now by Oasis being a bloated mess... it IS... but I find it's the Oasis album I always stick on if I want a bit of Oasis... there are some great songs on there, and the fact they rumble on far too long, and are all mired in a soup of dozens of pointless guitar overdubs doesn't really put me off... to me it's just part of the Oasis story arc: form band in rainy manchester, practice, get good, write some good songs, get signed, tour the world, snort EVERYTHING, become massive (in the UK anyway), snort TOO MUCH and finally run out of good songs.. Be Here Now is a band right on the edge of losing it big time, and it's fascinating to me for that reason... it's the kind of record a band could only ever make once, and it IS bloated and self-indulgent, but I kinda like it for those reasons :)

Truly rubbish albums by great bands:

Cut The Crap - The Clash
Dog Man Star - Suede
Yes Please - Happy Mondays
Wings - Back To The Egg
The Beatles - Let It Be

Lou Reed's 'Metal Machine Music' wasn't a band, and was orrible, but then I think it was deliberately so...

oh... 'Jazz' by Queen

I've just remembered that 'Tin Machine' thing that Bowie put out - truly awful!

Marc, I think it flat out sucks bro. It's a Zakk Wylde album with Ozzy singing on it. BLS riffs and squeals are guaranteed to make me put down the headphones.

If by Van Halen 3 you mean 'Women and Children First' - Excellent record! Just headin down a slightly different direction.
Dog Man Star too is bloody brilliant (especially the last 25 minutes - aweswome!)
As for Bowie - I'd say that apart from two or three tracks on each , both Tonight and Never Let Me Down are worse than anything he did with Tin Machine

Stone Roses second coming is a top album....not as good as the first but certainly not rubbish.

Fuzazi???? brilliant album.

I agree that some of the post For Those About To Rock albums were not very good but what about some of the Whitesnake albums post Saints and Sinners?

The Pogues - Pogue Mahone (not very good)

I think it's necessary to consider the evolution of bands and artists before dismissing an album or a song because it doesn't fit the mould of the previous offerings.

For instance I think the Whitesnake album with Steve Vai is very good. It's not traditional whitesnake but it works well.

Come and get it was the last Whitesnake album really, then they became Coverdale and his egotistical shenannigans snake

Avatar

# Posted by Bad Horsie (Mick) - 16/06/2010, 16:01 (GMT)

This is what I'm talking about. Whitesnake was ALWAYS Coverdale and hired guns. There never was a Whitesnake as a band.

Anyway. Put yer helmet back on. You're not home yet! lol

had some stability for 3 albums and some fantastic blues stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love slip of the tongue and the sykes stuff but it just isn't the whitesnake I fell in love with

Nice one mark good points there I totally love 1987 and slip of the Tongue I don't understand why people slate it,apart from 2 duffer tracks it's a hell of a piece of work,1987 is like a later snake greatest hits, but also the early stuff, a compilation called whitesnake the early years I'd fantastic every single track and the live in the heart of the city one oc my fave live albums ever, I love it all!

@ robertos - I actually really like St. Anger! I see it more of Hetfield's solo album than an actual metallica release, but theres a lot of raw emotion in there

Kiss Solo albums are soso except for Ace Frehleys which is really good , "back in the new york groove" is fantastic , Ace was a great player when clean and sober

Stanger has the worst recorded snare sound in rock history. lol.

Also Jaymz is in trouble if SOAD hear it and demand their riffs back. :oO

disagree with be here now, what other band could get away with releasing a 9 minute single - and it getting to #1!

AND it was released on a Thursday and still became the fastest selling album in history (even having missed out on Mon, Tue and Wed sales)

yes its over produced and the lyrics are lazy (apparently written in 2 weeks - the whole thing) but i like it!

i like it, but i dont listen to it.

I'm probably putting myself in a minority of one here (with everyone on earth - not just this site) but I don't think Chinese Democracy stank as much as everyone claims. Ok - it certainly isn't up there with their classic stuff (but what rock albums (by any band) are?) and there are some shite tracks on there but there are also some belting tunes for me. There Was A Time? Chinese Democracy? Better? If The World? Great songs for me. Some great guitar playing too (is it Robin Finck who plays the outro solo on There Was A Time - fantastic stuff).

Anyway - considering it's probably my favourite band of the lot, it pains me to say I'm with Rob all the way on Queen's 'Hot Space'. A real smear of dog shit on an otherwise phenomenal body of work. That album is utter shite.

slayer undisputed attitude, go back to what you do best guys

status quo aint complaining, we are and famous in the last century, another turgid offerin from these great legends

nirvana beach apart from one or two songs, theres not much showing what was to come for them on the next album

skid row subhuman race, apart from an awesome song called into another, maybe slave to the grind was too tough to follow..

bad company rough diamonds, even paul has off days

journey look into the future, steve perry thankfully wasnt far away

Too right Roj - I think Jiohnny the Fox is one of the all time best Lizzy - especially Johnny, Borderline and Jimmy The Weed.

@Bad Horsie (Mick) - that extreme album is the one I thought of first when I read this!! Bloody awful album (and shows what Paul Geary did for the band as he'd left before they recorded this album!)

St Anger is a given.......

@Alyerpal - I really liked the Tin Machine stuff!

For me, anything after the Police by Sting - wishy washy claptrap!!

Did anybody hear the drum and bass kind of thing Axl recorded before the actual Chinese Democracy was released? Now that WAS truly awful!!!!!

Virtual XI - Iron Maiden: Blaze Bayley was rubbish

Black Ice - AC/DC: A case of 'we've heard it all before'

Load/Re-Load/St.Anger - Metallica: Just plain crap!

I'd say:

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Liverpool. Frankie minus Trevor Horn are like the Jimi Hendrix experience minus Jimi Hendrix.

G&R - Chinese democracy. It's the mediocrity I hate, if it had been the worst album ever it'd be awesome. But it's not, it's just very, very average and that's somehow worse?

Kraftwerk - Electric Cafe. Kraftwerk bought a sampler and lost the ability to write music. There's about 30 seconds of melody on the whole album, the rest is just random sampled noises and rubbish beats

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut. Conclusive proof Roger Waters destroyed that band.

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother/Ummagumma. Proof that EMI obviously put a lot more faith in their artist then than they do now. Thank God they didn't drop them as Meddle is bloody brilliant!

Ultravox - U-VOX. After Vienna, each Ultravox album had less and less good songs on, this was the point where the good song quota reached zero.
