What I got up to this weekend with my 2 bands...

Gigs in Halifax and Leeds:-

We had a strange gig at the Shay (Halifax) on Friday with Delirium. Not many in, and a fairly downbeat atmosphere after the footy. Still, I was proud that the band gave a very solid performance with no corners cut, and we got our full fee with no complaints from Landlady Babs who seems to be working hard to build the venue's reputation.

On Saturday Angel Of Sin played the Tarn in Yeadon (Leeds). Ian was a very late withdrawal after injuring himself at work so luckily Damian Campbell was available to step in with virtually zero prep time. I really enjoyed the gig and Damian put in a fantastic, musical and consistent performance with only the occasional nod to guide him through unknown material. The highlight for me was Killing In The Name Of during the encores, which AoS hadn't ever tried before, never mind with a dep drummer. You really couldn't tell! Moments like that really do make me appreciate the community that we're part of.

Peace, Jon

Hey Jon
The Shay has been 'dead' for years.....shame.
There are not too many bands on here (NWB) that cross the Pennine devide as regularly as LGIT....we're over in Ackworth Saturday and Huddersfield Sunday.....just wondered how you find the NWB scene compared to Yorkshire.....I think there is a difference, but both areas are suffering the same problems.....

Gary,
We've had a number of quiet gigs at the Shay, but only played there about once or twice a year. We had hopes that it'd be busier with a new landlady who has done quite a bit of advertising but not to be.

I've not actually gigged in the NW this year with either band. Because of the static fees and spiralling costs, we haven't actively looked for gigs further afield this year - shame really. In the past I've found NW gigs pretty similar to gigs in the NE, Yorkshire, Humberside, Lincs etc. More difference between 2 near pubs than 2 counties fer instance. All the pubs are a bit quieter, the better more established venues are still 2/3 full instead of completely full but weaker venues are going to the wall at a rate of knots. Only the strong will survive.

Last year we did quite well in both bands as were picking up club bookings from WMCs that wanted decent pub bands rather than mega expansive club acts. That seems to have dried up.
