amp problem....

Hi guys.... Just after any advice

I have a (very) old Roland Jazz Chorus 77 amp the cute small one with the 2x10" speakers :-)

ita around 25 years old, the reverb hasn't worked for years, the chorus more recently (I think that's just the switch though) but as I use a boss multi effect non of that has really bothered me

Ironically the distorion does work but given that its one of the worst you'll ever hear I don't use it

Any way I used it at last practice ... and I don't quite know how to describe this ... it sounded shall we say "not clean"

I don't think distorted really describes it... these are some of the cleanest amps you'll ever hear and it just didn't sound right

I've tried all the usual disconnecting pedals changing leads etc but its still the same.... all the volume and equalizer knobs are working but it just doesn't sound clean

Any ideas what it might be ????

alternatively anyone know a reliable amp repairer in the vicinity of Wigan

cheers

Sounds like it could be a tubes thing (Im assuming its a tube amp?) - tubes just a bit old maybe? ( should be changed every 12 months or so if you're gigging regularly)

Otherwise...my bugera tube amp had a problem a while back where the cleans were similar to what you're describing...are all your tubes lit up like they usually would be? because in my case the transformer had blown, look inside and see if you can see any combustion / signs of heat damage, its usually an easy £20 fix if you take it into an electrician.

(don't know if this still applies to non-tube amps, but could well do)

could call Ritchie of Thomson Guitars, Wigan. if he cant fix it he will certainly be able to point you in the right direction of someone who can....MA amplifications at Standish / Chorley reopened a year or two back but I dont know if they have shut again.....Tex

If it's a tranny amp (solid state) it will be the electrolytic capacitors..they do age..dry up...not too expensive!

Try Cue Music in Darwen.

does it make any funny noises when there is nothing plugged in ?, I used to have a roland vga 7, and that started making funny noises, that turned out to be jack sockets not being used and the prongs springing together but not quite touching, shoving a jack plug in all the unused sockets remedied that, its worth a try
