their next tour will be their last apparently

now i like the stones music a lot, but they are one band that i dont understand why they are so massive and continue to have these huge grossing tours so i have a question.............

why are they so big? why are they so rich, theres just as many good bands that are better that dont seem to get the same cachet as they do, they obviously were part of the 60s boom that popularised blues which is awesome, Mick is an exciting frontman and keith of course came up with awesome riffs but sitll...........

obviously there is a good dozen songs that are absolutely total classic, and a few well known albums that stand up well in their own right(exile on main st etc) i have the hot rocks 2cd set which is absolute quality from each cd, no filler at all, but that is a cd that only goes up to early 1970s and that is nearly 40 years ago, since the brown sugar era, what have they done that stands up alongside any of the golden era stuff?

do the majority of people that stil go and watch them think, oh its the stones itll be good, or just go for the event?

just a thought as i read the newspaper article today about their apparent final tour of tours tour.............

the below is an example of their greatness, but i still cant understand their hugeness in rock culture?....mmmmm

Hot rocks (or Forty licks) is all you really need by the Stones.
Have you listened to the recent 'Shine a light' CD?
It's pretty sloppy, but THEY ARE THE STONES!!

The Stones hugeness is down to their superb 60's hits and the household names in the band - none of whom (EXCEPT CHARLE WATTS) mean anything outside the Stones.

Beggar's banquet, Let it bleed, Sticky fingers, and Nightmare on elm street (sic) are a run of sublime, essential Stones' albums

You have to get Let It Bleed, Exile, Sticky Fingers and possibly Some Girls and Beggars Banquet - the rest ( though I can't claim to be an authority on the 60's albums) vary in quality but do usually contain 3 or four great tracks and a lot of filler!

spose the point im trying to make is, great band but 3 or 4 great albums...... does that explain them being at the top branches of the tree in rock culture?...... , and massive massive millionaires?, based on about a dozen classics, maybe im being naive and thats all it needs, just the thing that gets me is the songs that people go to hear are over/just under 40 years old,you must know what im driving at, its not just these guys, many others as well being made even more huge by people that probably know bugger all about them and buy the overpriced tickets and packages cos "its the stones", but hey at least its bringing some money back for these bands because of money lost due to the ol' free downloading, but thats for another blog

what does being massive massive millionaires have to do with anything?
I suspect a bit of jealousy,
PS You'll never ever ever see Mick Jagger having to add (Metaleeka) or prefix Lizzy on end of his blogs

..........he's even getting too old to prefix ....young models to the end of his 'blog'

if Mick Jagger ever ever put Metalleeka on the end of his profile name, at least he'd hopefully spell it correctly. :0)

Just another example how you need to be mediocre if you want to make it really big.

Their best album for me, by miles, is Stripped. That's the only one I ever play all the way through. I've got about 4 or 5 vinyl LPs and have never felt the need to buy the CDs.

Don't have an answer for their longevity tho ... would have loved to have seen 'em at a theatre but will never go and see 'em (or anybody else for that matter) in an aircraft hangar.

There is an old music theory that the Stones where the first group to introduce a lead singer with character and attitude....and I must agree that the more I look at it the more I agree

Every time they tour, there's a new album. It's the way it should be and they've been doing it since the 60's. That is why they will always maintain their credibility. They are a money machine but at least they back up there superstar status with albums which is something that other so called superstars can't do.
