Rock singles didnt used to get in the charts cos they were not on Radio 1s playlist. Never stopped rock bands playing to massive crowds at festivals and filling the large Arenas when they came along. How much of Cowell and Walsh's marketed shite could headline Reading, Leeds, Donington or Sonisphere etc - none of it.
I seem to recall Ac/Dc and Duran Duran both playing Leeds Queens Hall in the early 80's and DC had the bigger crowd. They were never played on the radio back then, Duran were then "massive" as a pop act.

Didn't stop 'Out in The Field's getting to number 5 though - even without being on Radio 1 shite playlist.
The 'charts' as they are now, with the decreasing number of sales. X-factor driven groups and down loads etc are not really a good indicator of what's popular anyway.
The singles with the most marketing are exactly that - singles.
Rock groups tend to produce and push albums - I think single releases from these kind of bands are usually down to the record companies wanting more money.

singles were great when they were album pre release and you got something decent on the b sides (live stuff etc). I think even albums may die away given time, with bands just releasing EP lentgh downloads from their own sites as and when; just keep the income ticking over

You're not wrong Jez - I seem to recall buying more than a few where I ended up liking the 'B' side more than the 'A' side!
I do think 'rock' bands will keep releasing abums longer than alot of other genres, simply because of the way they write and record, and also because they know the fans want albums.
I'm not averse to downloading a track, but if I really like it, then I want to hear a lot more of the artist.
Hope so anyway.....

alot of the problem is the people who clasify music, 'florence and the fookin machine' - ROCK - i think not, there are less rock bands around in the public eye because of the fabricated crap on TV

The singles chart is dead as a door nail anyway so it's not really worth reading into that much. Ask yourself when was the last time you rushed out to buy/download your favourite band's new single? How many singles do you buy in relation to albums?

In terms of rock's proliferation of the album chart, things still seem to be fairly alright - that's also an area where the reality show stars and disposible pop bands don't fare half as well either.

I do have to question how the Radio 1 playlist can fit in with the objectivity of the BBC as it just renders the station a giant advert for the bands on that list.

Nowt wrong with Duran Duran either.

@Film ! Absolutely nothing wrong with Duran Duran! It was just the point that at the at the time they were probably "the biggest" chart act going. (Strange era looking back - chart acts who could play instruments!!!!)
