Set list etiquette

what if your new band's set is rather similar to your old band..?

ok, first of all, this not about The Fix.. it's about another old band

My newish band, The Subliminals, was formed with one aim in mind when it came to the set... punky, tuneful, loud & fast... so we've got Sex Pistols, Green Day, Oasis, The Who, The Clash, Sham 69...

you get the idea... big punk pop hits and noisier pop rock from that era to the present day

I left a punk rock covers band in 2007, who are still active, but under a different name...

My band and their band do about a dozen of the same tunes (the usual suspects: pretty vacant, god save the queen, ever fallen in love, borstal breakout etc), and I wanted to know how acceptable you guys think it is for MY new band to do those songs, given that they see themselves as the pioneer local punk rock covers band?

is it bad etiquette for me to tread similar ground as my former colleagues?

have you been in a similar situation where you band is in competition with former band mates?

I don't see a problem. It's not as if they own the songs.

Steve, the Classic Rock bands on this site are changing line ups all the time and most of these bands are playing some of the same songs and I personally don't think it's a problem. Same with the Indie Bands as well on here. Good luck matey,

Rick.

What Dave said.

If you check out most of the bands on here, about 40-75% of the set-lists are the same.

Etiquette? My arse! Do you enjoy em? If piggery went west I reckon 5 new bands would spring up doing the same stuff. Wouldn't waste a moment more thinking about it

you play those songs cos they're the hits from that genre - the songs people know (people who like it, and those who don't). Hope you're playing Teenage Kicks... :0)

take the stuff you love - leave the stuff you don't - but most of all - play what the punters want to hear

Every band I've been in down the years has influenced me....if you take the best bits and learn from 'all' good and bad experiences you'll improve as a musician, a band member and a person.
The band you are in NOW is the most important and you should play what you enjoy playing...
It's not like you're just copying another band.....

Just play your best numbers and if it overlaps, don't worry.
After all, there are thousands of classic rock bands playing exactly the same covers, just in a slightly different order...
