that I forgot to big up the band!
It was, ofcourse, Phoenix, Saturday before last.
A pleasure to meet the guys again and to see them play.
Steve the singer is just such a good frontman, great voice and stage presence.
T'other Steve on drums is one of those annoying guys who manages to get big, thumping rhythms going, whilst looking like he isn't even trying (I thrash about like a landed fish just doing a straight 4-4 beat!)
Lloyd is another bass player with a constant smile on his face, and meshes with Steve seamlessly.
Sam, the young man with wizards fingers on lead guitar is just awesome.
And John? Well, he pretends to be a rhythm guitarist, but is actually a bloody handy lead player aswell.
The five of them played to a very appreciative and pretty much packed Old Market Tavern, with every song well recieved. From my personal favourites 'Slither', 'Rock Bottom and 'Play That Funky Music', to a new track for them 'Synchronicity II' and the roof raising 'Freebird', the band rocked and you could tell they were really enjoying themselves.
They kicked off about 9.45, did an hour and then went back on after about 20 mins and stayed on 'till nearly 1! (Mind you, they did have to do about 4 encores!)
There was a piece of unbelievable irony aswell - last time I saw these guys (also at The Old Market) in March, John's Marshal head stopped working second song in.
So when I arrived, he jokingly said 'I've brought my spare this time'. And? Second song in - yep! Dead head! So he got his spare out of the car while the guys soldiered on and carried on like nothing had happened!
So there you have it :Phoenix - awesome!
