NWB - Community Blog

Can everyone just stop complaining please?

You've got exactly what you wished for

All these people moaning about the site, the quality of the content, the users and the format. Just cast your minds back 12 months when you were all complaining about the "lack of banter", the format of the blogs, how the site should be what the people want it to be.

You've got what you wanted. Tedious repetitive blogs, spamming, trolls and general abuse interspersed with the odd gig promo and items for sale and we've lost some community favourites, some decent venues and some loyal fans along the way.

I just think it's a bit rich that people are complaining now.

I've seen blogs on here the last few days that the Dalek would be proud of. He's been hounded out of town for less and now you're all at it. It's a disgrace to be honest.

But then you're all going to disagree because I'm ST.

Well said ST, I am inclined to agree with what you are saying.

I have been a member of this board since March and I must say the change over the last few months has been incredible - not entirely for the better though sadly.

I am not the most prolific poster, I make the odd contribution here and there (mostly for open mic/jam night promos), but mostly I tend to be a fence sitter, happy to observe and read.

I must say that I am finding myself spending a lot less time on here in recent weeks - which is a shame.......

I have read a lot of blogs on here in the last few days all discussing the 'community', the problem with this is that the community only really consists of a core group, the rest of us live on the peripheral edge, posting our promo or for sale items, usually to little or no response.

Anyway I'll get to the point....(Ed: Yes please do!) there are many uses of a board like this, debate discussion, selling - these are all expected - but the primary purpose has to be one of support and encouragement, there are a number of young bands on here, just starting out and looking for advice / help / a leg up and whilst some constructive advice is given it is rare. Most of the core group on here are gigging every weekend (more than once in many cases) I do not see any of you offering the support slots that so many of these acts need, I also see an edge of contempt and almost professional jealousy coming to the fore in some posts.

Doesn't seem right to me, anyway I am sure most of you will just think that I am a nobody with no real knowledge or experience just mouthing off to be noticed, that is your opinion to take, however if there is one thing that I say that anyone pays any attention to it should be this....

A community is a open group to anyone that wants to join, the elder members look out for the younger and help / nurture where they can, a community looks out for all within it's borders and should not dismiss or alienate from within.

I thank you for your time.

Dom

I agree...
I come on this site most days to have a look whats happening and keep up... I try not to post any blogs unless I feel they would be of some interest to somebody or I am promoting a gig. We have all made this site what it is today good or bad we have done it...
Personally I don't read all the blah blah blahs cos you can just tell from the title what its gonna be like in that blog.
I wouldn't change anything about it..I have met some fantastic people on here... I also wouldn't complain about things cos they could be a lot worse.
The site is for the majority of the time amusing, informative and helpful...isn't that what it started out to be...I've been on here from nearly the very begining and I have no plans to move out any time soon. I will just read what I WANT to read and not complain about the stuff I don't want to read.

The simplest thing to do is just get on with what you do and IGNORE anyone who does things differently to you. It's not as if they are fucking your life up by posting a lot or not posting much or whatever it is the individual person gets pissed off with.

This is, of course, aimed at EVERYONE who whinges.

My opinion is...People join this site for different reasons and it means something different to everyone. You might get someone just signing up to promote one gig or to sell one item then they might not come back again, that's fine. You'll get people who just come on to check if there's any gigs going and won't get involved in any of the other posts, that's fine too. And then you get the people who are interested in the community banter side of things. All of those people have a place here at NWB and as long as people continue to get SOMETHING out of the site then it's worth having.

@ST - totally agree with you pal! for the past couple of weeks its been a moan here and a nag there and quite honestly, iv not a clue whats gotten into everyone!

Regarding the site 'community' i think were all quite lucky to have a guy like mr.NWB who has set the site up for the general publics use, and has spent his own time crafting and making it better, sure its not perfect, but what is? this is the best blogging site ive ever been on and happy to know that everyone gets (reasonably!) on together, and everyone is as helpful as the next man.

So folks, lets stop the complaining and be thankful to the gods of rock and of course mr.NWB!

as always common sense views have prevailed, still a great site, and like in life ya makes your choice, if it annoys ya or you dont agree, why waste the energy on moaning. and the so called "clique" thing is bullshit, my view of a clique is a group of people that get on and are similar, thats why they get on, people being envious of banter and friendships forged on here is very misguided and sad

we all love music, were all different thats what makes things interesting, people will always disagree but key is the respect of others opinions.

@Rick - You've not missed much Rick. Just some of the more frequent users of NWB spamming and trolling the blogs. The sort of behaviour that other "less popular" users e.g. Dalek got hounded out for. But as usual, if you say something it's gets misconstrued as something else. Was talking about it last night and it's time to retire the ST profile methinks. Also, not sure why the reference to cliques?

ST, Dalek got blasted because he or she was a troll specifically set up to cause friction. Nothing more. Dalek was not a real contributing member of this site and you know it.

# Posted by ST Photography - VIVA LA COMMU... - 07/11/2010, 14:24 (GMT)

It's still double standards. Spamming and trolling are ruining this site IMHO. I accept that that is only my opinion. Others view it differently. The blogs will be around long after I'm gone. Just a shame that people can't see that bands and venues are moving away from this site because it's turned into more of a social network than a functional site. But that's what the people want. Let them have it.

I've decided there is no right or wrong about it. The site has evolved into what it is and it seems the majority are happy with it.

Ive not been on here long enough to comment on whether bands and venues are moving away but I am surprised that some venues aren't on here that host NWBs (such as Pics and Im sure there must be others in other towns).
If the site has evolved into a social networking site hen maybe thats just the way things are now with twitter, facebook etc.
It still seems a pretty unique site and really usefull. It gave my current band a great starting point with regards to venues etc, its great for picking gear up without the nonsense of ebay (sorry Smitten - I will pick that guitar up one day!!). The trolling thing only seems temporary - since Ive been on I caught the back end of Dalek and that guy who talked in txt language but they've come and gone.
Think you just have ride with the odd little bit of handbags and appreciate what is there.

# Posted by The Cottonhouse Shakers - 07/11/2010, 15:14 (GMT)

@Jez C - some good points made and your right the site goes through up and down phases. 80% of my comments tend to be light hearted which could be interpreted as irrelevent and off topic. I suppose that this is true but sometimes I feel that the mood needs lightening a little. Those who don't like it delete the comments which is fine by me as I know who enjoys the banter and who doesn't. If this is the banter clique then I'm happy to be part of it.

There's a fine line between a community and social networking - would the site not funcion better with a tighter community?

As for troll blogs, if nobody replies then they go away very quickly.
