TIME TO NAME AND SHAME GILLIBRAND ARMS CHORLEY

A THOROUGHLY DESPICABLE LANDLORD, BE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF

we have just got back from being totally ripped off after sweating our nads off for 2 and a half hours. We agreed a fee in advance, the pub was full, people were dancing on the tables yet the landlord (had the pub for 2 weeks) saw fit to chip us £90 and lied that he had us booked for that amount. When we questioned this and asked for the correct amount he grabbed my mate by the throat and wrestled him to the floor. Rightly or wrongly my mate retaliated and smacked him........the police were called and everyone was interviewed for the best part of 40 minutes at which point the police concluded that the landlord was in the wrong and could be charged with ASSAULT. My mate will not be pressing charges and we are the best part of £100 out of pocket (merry bleeding christmas). In this time of recession I would not wish anyone to go to the wall but if this is how someone trys to get by.........THEY DESERVE IT FULLY. Thankfully this practice is very very rare so hopefully the word will spread and spineless snakes like this will not last very long.
Sorry for the rant but emotions are running high at the moment, AVOID THE GILLIBRAND ARMS IN CHORLEY LIKE THE PLAGUE

Dear me, thanks for the heads up. We had a similar experience last month in the Butchers Arms, in Dewsbury, where the landlady and her mates tried to bump us used to excuse that we were shite.. but at least we got our fill! This sounds like madness. Hope to the prick gets taught a lesson, after working hard for a performance and getting a crowd going the last thing you want is to get insulted, let alone assaulted, by the guy who's benefitted from you being there. And £90?!? Some bands earn that per member, and still feel hard done by!

Yep. us too. Chorley based and not going anywhere near 'THE GILLIBRAND ARMS'. Thing is though, whilst initially this blog will turn bands away from this venue, it will eventually be forgotten. I can remember reader about U2-II's experience a while back but TBH it had completely slipped my mind 'till it was mentioned here.

So, do we need a Tagged blog (like those to the right) for named and shamed venues (and even bands) who dont play fair? I think so. It would be a good reference point, Mr NWB?

I think we do need a blog for things like this and for pubs that close down or landlords leaving the pub and not canceling gigs happened to us loads of times, all have a good christmas DECADENZE

Thats really bad to hear that, especially when they must have made enough money as the pub was so full.

I'll make sure they never go in the magazine.

Keep rocking though guys!

Thats absolutly shamefull...I feel for you Guys.
Glad you named them, why can bands not be paid upfront, before a gig? I know its not traditionally what happens, but as we hear more and more about this sort of practice maybe it is the way to go ? as you have fixed a fee before hand why not ? why wait till you have played,to late then, just a thought.

we have played a few places where we have been paid up front and then given extra at the end of the night. We are still very upset about the whole insulting scenario, but very moved by the show of support from the other bands and venues on here. Our best wishes go out to all on here, keep rocking and have a great Christmas and New Year.

I would like to add my 2 pennorth in...recently I was booked to play at southport fc at the grandstand bar...gig was confirmed 2 weeks in advance and posters were dropped off. I got there at 7.30 to set up only to be met by the booking guy outside saying " ooooo I don;t think this is going to happen tonight mate ", "come in and wait for half an hour and we'll see what happens" well I'm sorry but if your having a bad time of it at least have the decency to ring me up earlier for a start then at least I can TRY to find another gig , or if I turn up PAY ME !!!!!.
I have since put a claim in against them through the smal claims court which I expect to win my fee back AND they will have to pay costs..... to many venues are doing this and it gives the decent hard working great venues a bad name... my advice....don't let em get away with it...a verbal contract is as good as a written one ...CLAIM and weed out the bad apples and teach them a lesson..maybe they wont be so quick to treat you like sh*t next time.. I will let you know how I get on with the claim...rant over

I agree to having a name and shame list but it also works both ways were we have had bands let us down on the day.

fucking disgusting! cannot belive that somebody could be so hard faced over 100 quid. we've had some problems in the past but nothing near this and we still maintain that there should be sort of formal agreement or contract to end any sort of dispute at the end of gigs where payment is usually made. at the mo its sort of a gentlemans agreement where either side can potentially back out, of course if they are that way enclined!!!!!
still think itd be gr8 to get a ratings system on here, the only people that have something to fear are the arseholes that let the rest of us down!
rant over!!!!

A tagged name and shame blog would be an excellent idea but the venue or band being named should have the opportunity to counter any allegation before publication. This would increase the workload of the site administrators who do plenty already by running the site. With all parties putting their sides the validity of any dispute would be confirmed or disproved, ensuring a just and fair result.

An alternative to this suggestion would be to have a spare guitar. At the end of the gig it could be ceremoniously wrapped around the landlord's head in a blaze of glory in the event of being ripped off.

now now, a guitar over the head could get you into
more trouble, i think the pa top speaker on its stand
accidentaly falling over in he,s general diection would be difficult to prove in the court of law, oh yes how about a mackie with a built in amp in it, owch that would hurt!

ohh i forgot to say, dont worry about the speaker
cause the landlord will cushion its fall.

i think D on a D is speaking sensibly. perhaps the 100mph mag boys could speak to bands and venues in their Journo capacity to try and get both sides of the story...???
