Myspace lost the plot years ago. I think it got confused about it's identity when Facebook rose to prominence. It was a perfectly good social networking site, it just needed to have a few features added to it. Instead they tried to emulate Facebook, rather than play on it's own strengths, which was a miles better multimedia aspect.

I wouldn't be surprised if Murdock pulls the plug and if he does, it'll be a shame. All I can say is I bet the guys that wrote it and sold it to Murdock are laughing all the way to the bank!

I bet they are...the Bank of Maldives pmsl

Yeah, I still use myspace to chuck my solo pish up there and we have the customary metalleeka page but I don't think many people use it any more.

Talking of facebook, does anyone know of any good music apps that you can add your own tracks to your profile?

Myspace's problem was that no matter what theme you stuck on it, it still looked fugly as hell!! They should of changed the look of it years ago and the move to the new myspace is too little to late unfortunately :(

As for facebook can't you just upload the music to the profile? search facebook for "From Eleanor" the have a cool thing when you click onto there page is that what your looking for?

I think the problems arose when News International realised that you can't actually make any proper money out of Myspace. I think they envisioned it being the world's biggest cash cow. Instead, it's just become a useful free resource for bands.

Unfortunately Rupert didn't get to be ludicruously wealthy by helping people or doing good deeds. I guess we can wave goodbye to myspace soon.

there is an mp3 player gadget for facebook. Paul installed ours, so I can't run you through the ins and outs, but it can sit on your page like any of the other 'boxes'

the big hassle is you have to get approval for every track you upload! i think they're trying to avoid copyright infringement, but it's a serious pain.

when it works, however, it's great - works seemlessly with the rest of the page like an integrated video.

hope this helps!!

Update!!

There is a bug with this mp3 player - it will only play your songs in order - ie you click the one at the top of the list (in bigger type), it will play that and move on! You can of course click towards the end of a track to move on to the next song but it's a terrible issue.

Apparently it is a known bug so I assume they're working on it, but it has been this way for over a year!!!

Reverbnation also allows to to integrate with Facebook, but it wouldn't be as elegant as a properly working Facebook mp3 app.

I think myspace is brilliant from a bands point of view:
You have more control over the layout
You can put up more information on one page
You can change the background so it looks pretty
The track player is s much more simpler and easier to use/add tracks to/install
It's easier to find people on it
Because of this 'more sense of freedom' i suppose, i will continue using it till the very end!

I have always used facebook for friends/family and myspace for band stuff, and it will always be that way for me, I think the facebook musician page is a lot more boring and complex to use personally.

I agree with almost everything you say Neal, however, consider this...

If you give people so much control over layout etc, a lot of them will produce godawful looking pages!!! For those that take the time, it's great, but it's so easy to make a real mess of a myspace page.

Also, myspace is far less popular now than it was, and way less popular than facebook. If you're trying to promote yourself, ideally you'd use both, but if you can only do one or the other, doesn't it make sense to use the one with the biggest potential audience for your band?

I liken it to when you submit websites to the search engines. There are loads of them, but the one you really want a good page rank for, and the one you spend most time on, is google.

Totally not having a go - just my 2 pennarth!!

@ Mick - yeah suppose, with the layout thing. And also agree with you on the popularity side, its just a shame more people don't use myspace.
But yeah we have a band facebook as well, still prefer the myspace!

I've been on myspace tonight and had a shock when I got there. I am sad to see it die off but at the same time, I can't be bothered with new lay outs. It took me long enough to suss the old page out!

I find that for music soundclick.com does a great job once you have uploaded your music and pics etc. you can just paste in the code and forget about it, the player alway loads quick and plays, I find the myspace player either doesnt work or crashes out more often than not and it's fucking slow to load as well.
