Self Penned Reviews

What's the point?

Reviews from other bands or other independants I completely have time for. I just dont see the point in bands reviewing how they did on a Friday / Saturday - "crowd was up for it" "sound was great" "new songs X and Y went down really well" "place was heaving".
Paul (Mr NWB) - if you are listening - can you create a new Tag - 'Self Review' so I can filter out the bull. Ta

even worse....... is making up false log-ons to do a self(from another log-on) review!

you can do a self review, maybe discribing the venue, it could be a new one or they have had a new stage and you was the first to use it, but i do think bigging yourself up in a review is a little naff,
also if nobody in the pub is there off nwbs you arnt likly to get one are you.

think, as said, if tells about the venue, crowd (what songs they like/dont like) then its usefull. If people want to say theyu they're the dogs, then they have to live up to it dont they!!! Now completely contradicting myself (its hard being schizophrenic!) you couldn't really give much kudos to a self penned review of how good you were - sure we've all been in bands we're someone never really appreciates how bad they are outside of their own mind!!!

i find venue reviews very usefull, parking, electrics loading amount of space, issues with being paid etc.

rapturous self reviews mean nothing, (We blew the roof off/we were on form/the crowd loved it etc) . in fact they annoy most people i know

I'm past caring tbh. Seems whatever you write on these blogs these days, someone takes issue with it. The motto these days appears to be "If you don't like it, don't read it".

its funny no one ever writes "there was no one there, we played appalingly and the sound was terrible" id be more inclinded to believe a review like that LOL

To be honest Grooverman, I've seen plenty of "ironic, humorous" reviews like that and they're just as tedious IMHO.

No problem with reviews of venues.
@Jez C - even if you talk about which songs the crowd likes seems a tad too self congratulatory to me!
I've turned into and old cynic.

Can sorta understand where you are coming from guys but I tend to do a fair few self reviews and am usually reasonably honest about it. Would never say "god we wuz pure unbridled dogshit tonight". Mainly cos everyone who has seen us knows that's a level we hope to achieve someday hahahaha. Personally read all the reviews with a pinch of salt and try to dig out the useful stuff. Grooverman usually puts summat useful on about nos of plug sockets etc and have tried to adopt that in mine. If someone says the punk stuff went down really well at such and such a place it may influence some choices in our set. You can usually tell if I didn't like a place if I don't biggup the owner/barstaff etc. They are useful to some degree is my view!

An independant review or even a one-liner from someone you don't know is always good, we all love a little big-up every now & again. Out of the 300+ fans on our Facebook page I'd say we don't know 80% of them, just people who've seen us at a gig and want future gig updates...and its always nice to get the odd message of praise from someone who doesn't know the band personally.

A self-review of the venue, loading, stage area etc is fine...even saying you felt you gelled well as a band on the night is OK. But any further and most people just switch off & click back.

Remember 99% of people here are in a band themselves...I've recently re-discovered the 'fun factor' of playing in a band again and I love it! Nowadays I don't take much notice of whats said about us, we just enjoy playing and entertaining an audience however big or small.

Well bands are supposed to big themselves up but not in the company of other bands so this is a tricky one because all different people come on here. Better to play it safe and do a venue review and let others review your band.

I like us. We always go down well and we normally get rebooked.
The band is the best I've played in for years.. However, I
wouldn't ever dream of bigging my own band up ANYWHERE but on
our own website www.thekerbcrawlers.co.uk and I don't go into a
flowery 'Fantasy Island' style on there either), as it's a valid
promotional tool and needs to be used properly.

I believe firmly that it's a venue's job to review bands.
Audience reviews are just as valid. We welcome either and we often
invite venues to review us.

Bands writing glowing reviews of themselves just doesn't work. Just
wait 'til the night the same band gets a booking on the back of a
glowing review and they sail into the new venue and suck.

Leave reviews to independent reviewers.

I have done a number of venue reviews.
They are factual precise and unemotional. Hopefully useful.

If a venue has given us a bad time, I just won't review them.

we just say thanks to everyone after a gig and tell it like it is. Not a big fan of the self review bollox myself.

Promotion is, and always has been, a huge part of rock'n'roll. A 'buzz' surrounding a band gets more punters in, which generates a better atmosphere which the band use to perform better and the punters have a better time - it all feeds off that 'buzz'.

I prefer not to write about how well we've played but happy to say the gig went well and we/they had a good night. And I WILL say if we've had a cr@p gig - but it hasn't happened yet in the 18+ months that I've been in Delirium. We've had pubs that are empty who seem surprised that we've only brought 2 carloads of fans with us (eg The Shay in Halifax) - I don't regard that as a failing of the band, especially for an out of town gig.

its not logical just egoistical(sounds like a prog song) to give a glowing review of yourself as a fan i get slagged of for giving a unbiased review of gigs i have been to,in the words of roy walker i say what i see and hear, its usually people who big themselves up who are the main culprits on a lighter note good to see CRAZY TRAIN back in the mix

Your reviews aren't unbiased. You don't like Duos for a start off. The music is the same. Just played by 2 people. Also I know a certain guitar player on her that you used to snipe at with monotonous regularity. Unbiased? No. You are not.

not tasking sides here but i cyber stalked Steves anthem review 25.1.10

"went to see the band anthem use that term loosely at the oddies last night,no drummer no bass player basically rock karaoke, sorry to be negative but live music should have a heart and a soul and played with passion,i didnt enjoy"

"anthem are no doubt good musicians but backing tracks etc do nowt for me and a lot of people who were there at the oddies rick? dont lets nwb get pc we all love live music "

again not taking sides I think Steves got an opinion, thats valid, Ive never seen Anthem but my mate Chris says Marks a great player and a nice guy and he knows his onions so thats good enough for me !!
