If you could only own TWO albums

by any band you like..........

This stems from an after gig conversation last night, listening to 'Street Survivors' by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I think that if you pick any band you like, there are always 2 albums that encompass the whole thing you personally like about the band.

For instance, for me 'Pronounced' (the first album) and the aforementioned 'Street Survivors' (the last album of the 'original' line up) cover everything I like about Skynyrd - all the intervening albums are good, but I could live without them.

Also, 'Johnny The Fox' and 'Soldier of Fortune' cover everything I like about Thin Lizzy (although ideally I would need 'Black Rose' aswell!).

What do you think?

Is it workable?

Pick a band and 2 albums and let's come up with the definitive list of albums we should all have.......

a bit off the beaten track maybe here but i'm a massive elliott smith fan

his first album 'roman candle' is just amazing. so raw and poetic. To my knowledge I think it was all recorded on his four-track and was sent off to a record company by his then-girlfriend against his wishes.

my other album from him would be the one released posthumously 'From a Basement on the Hill' - again very raw in parts, this was a group of songs which elliott had recorded for an upcoming album which his record company decided wasn't commercial enough and demanded he made a second disc which was more commercial. The second disc didn't get finished.

my favourite song from that album:

All great choices guys, but I was really after the TWO albums by ONE band that define that band for you.

You can pick as many bands as you like, but can only have 2 albums by them - here's another:

The band - Blue Oyster Cult

The 2 albums 'Secret Treaties' and 'Agents of Fortune' for the simple reason that these two albums contain about 75% of my favourite tracks these guys have ever done!

(And I think we should disallow compilations and live albums - just to make it a bit harder!)

@ al - he's the one artist that got me seriously interested in making music myself. saw him live in 2001 (only downside -it was in wolverhampton) and was one of the most amazing shows i've ever been to - not the best showman but his voice and playing were just perfect

his songs have been in a few films so you might have heard them without realising who it was ;)

but yeah well worth a listen

good idea this thread Al- there's a few albums on here i'm gonna check out now

@ IainRKid - spits tea out - 'Mirrors'? You have got to be joking. It's the most out of place BOC album there is!

@ Anthony TGM - Don't know Spastic Ink, but will check them out.
Loving the others, although i think I'd have to swap 'The Extremist' for 'Flying In a Blue Dream'

The Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks.

As far as I'm concerned just the one album from the Pistols needs putting on this list. My personal favourite album of all time and one of the most innovative pieces of music any of us will ever hear (IMO)

The Stranglers:

Rattus Norvegicus
No More Heroes

DEVO:

Are We Not Men?
Duty Now For the Future.

Buzzcocks:

Another Music In A Different Kitchen (How they were back in the day)
FlatPack Philosophy (How they are now)

Stiff Little Fingers - Go For It / Get a Life
Rush - Show of Hands / Hemispheres
Oasis - Definitely Maybe / Whats the Story

...all very different bands but 'classics' in their own right.

*note: this is not the opinion of the SB just mine, shoulda used my own login really.

Maiden - Powerslave & Piece of Mind

Rush - Signals & Permanent waves

Metallica - Ride The Lightening & Master of Puppets

Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but thes albums tend to be in a 'sweet spot' in a bands career and are next to each other in time!!

@AYP - well we defo agree on Blood on the tracks but I now think that 'Bringing it all back home' should go alongside it (but I may feel differently tomorrow). I think that Dylan is the most difficult to pick because there are so many classic albums and all very different.

@ The Cottonhouse Shakers:

Four amazing songs ( Goodbye Blue Sky, Hey You, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell) do not a double album make ;-)

The rest is just filler to me sorry :-|

Each to their own though.

Best wishes
