Putting the feelers out there.

Hi everyone

I am (by my own admission) a very amateur photographer. I have no examples of my previous work, as I have none. However, I do have a good eye (some people say I have two) and I fancy taking photos of bands; either portraits on location somewhere (as I have no studio), or live shots at gigs. I have invested some money in a new digital SLR camera and I'm ready to get out there.

So, like a band with no reputation, how do you get experience? You keep your prices low and hope that satisfied customers will recommend your work to others. With that in mind, I'm offering the following service. Subject to mileage costs agreed prior to the session, you name your own price for the photos you want, if you want them. And if you dont want any, then you don't even pay the agreed mileage costs. No negotiation on my part, although I can't promise not to be offended if you take the piss!

I will meet you at an agreed location or at your gig with my camera. I will take a load of portrait or live photos or a mix of both. At the end of the session, you can review the photos on the camera. If you like some or all of them, you name your price. I will send you the colour photos either on a CD or via e-mail (depending on numbers).

If that's sounds too good to be true, then it's because I am relying on your honesty in offering a fair price for whatever photos you decide you want. If it works for Radiohead, it works for me. But this deal cannot last forever, so the first few bands to register their interest via a PM will get first refusal. And be quick, because my time is limited.

PM me your details if you are interested. This offer applies equally to venues who may be looking for promo shots.

Rgds
Asa

@ ST, I have sucessfully taken millions of photos with my old Olympus 10 SLR (daughter growing up, conservatories ect) The missus bought me a digital SLR last Christmas and it's doing my head in. Don't know if it's fooked or I'm thick but the flash has a mind of it's own. I'll bring it to the next Headbanders get together and maybe I can pick your brains, for a pint or two,

Wick.

Good luck Asa - I've picked up a lot of work from the good people out in La La Land and continue to do so. I'm sure it will work for you aswell.

I'll have a word with the lads......

Cheers Al. You've done some fine work for me on banners and bass drum heads, so you can have yours with no min fee either.

For everyone else, an example:

Say you want me to travel to Bolton to take some pics. The mileage fee will be approx £10 for fuel from my house in Stockport to and from Bolton. I take photos, we review them at the end of the session and if there are photos you want, you pay the agreed mileage fee (agreed prior to session, so no surprises) and make me what YOU consider a fair offer on top for the photos. I accept your offer, no negotiation. If you don't like ANY of the photos, you don't pay anything. Not even the mileage fee.

The fee is entirely at your discretion with only the mileage guaranteed IF you like the photos! Practically risk free. But hurry, this is a limited offer.

That's a great idea ST and some decent gestures thrown in. I am sure you will get some work out of it all.

I am a very keen photographer and interested to know what kit you bought including lenses? For the record, live shots and portraits it's very hard to beat a 'Nifty 50' Cheap lens but very effective for band pics.

Good luck pal.

p.s. sorry for the hijack !

Thanks Dawg. I went for the Nikon D5000 with the AF-S 18-35mm lens and the AF-S 35-200mm lens. They came highly recommended by friends of mine who are professional photographers, so it's the real deal!! Thanks for the recommend on the lens. I will bear that in mind for future upgrades ;o)

Two takers so far. No Boundarys and Poison Whiskey.

if you're serious about getting work just go to a local music venue, have a word with bands and take pictures of the night. straight away you've got examples of work to tempt new business and the bands are happy because they got some free pics out of it.

would have thought thats pretty simple to be honest.

Thanks for the comment Mockingbird. That is a very simple idea. Close friends will get the benefit of freebies. I don't care how little experience I've got, I'm not in the habit of giving things away for free to people I don't know. And besides, covering my mileage is hardly going to break the bank is it?
