Big W was founded there as part of the Jam Nights. Our first gig came about when a band canceled at the last minute and Waz threw some of us together to cover it. He'd never sung without his drums in fornt of him. He was shaking for most of the gig.

Was a great venue and some good people worked there. Obviously John worked his nuts off for that place, and not forgetting the late Tony who put on some great food and killer joints!!!! (not the meat type!).

I live in Tyldesley and drive past it most days. Its a shame its in the state it is. Its a nice building and it'd be good to see it opem, even if it wasn't a music venue.

Absolutely awesome pub, first proper rock pub I ever went into! Some great memories in that place, mostly of deafeningly loud bands! What's happening with it these days?

Yes Daz, the famous purplevest (PV) that spawned a 1000 posts ..ended up being moorland heather !!! That ended up on the wall with my Heinz beanz tin on the shelf ...some great nites in there ,,,,,!!! eeeeehhhhhh!!!!

We had some of our best gigs ever at The Barrel, wish somebody would take it on again. If I won the lottery I bloddy well would. Feckin awsome place in it's hayday.

A memorable time was i was gigging with RR and the whole pub pulled off their tops n shirts to reveal .................they were all wearing pink vests .......!!!!.....yes it was purple!!!! ;-)

May have been purple when you started but after a few washes was definatley PINK!!!!!
In fact you're still saved in my mobile as PINK VEST!

When Tony passed away we had his wake over the road from the Barrel at the Catholic Club. T'was like a Barrel reuinion, and the temptation was there to break into the pub for old times same.

I know John was/is gutted that the old place had to go. Lot of commitment from him to keep the place going financially and effort, as he worked full time.
