A big thankyou to The Old Market Tavern and Phoenix

for another great Saturday night......

Me n IainRkid n StuartRkid'skid arrived about eight oclock to a pretty empty Tavern, but early days and all that.

So first pint of the night was Drunken Duck - light with a citrusy(?) after taste and very nice too.

Said hello to all the boys in the band: Steve (singer), Steve (drummer), Steve (John), Steve (Llloyd) and not forgetting Steve (Sam).

Just having a chat with Jimmy when Dave who works with Stuart turns up and we get into a lively discussion about punk and new wave and vinyl and mp3's. Then it's another pint - this time Thin Ice, an even lighter bitter and absolutely delicious, so me n Rkid decide to stick on that for the night. 'Mind you, they'll probably run out' jokes Rkid....

Now Steve Blease appears and has us in stitches because some guy at the bar has been bending his ear about whether or not swearing should get you in trouble - only it turns out he was swearing at coppers in the early hours of the morning whilst completely w***ered and ended up in court for it!
Steve also tells us that the OMT has been not so busy the last few weeks and it's looking ominously like he's right.....

Then Andy from Jump The Shark walks in and we've got a proper little NWBers party going, along with members of the band drifting in and out of the conversation.

9.45 Phoenix go on, and about 2 songs in the place is rammed! I kid you not. The usual excellent song selection, and equally excellent playing, including 'Synchronicity' by The Police, has the drowd singing along from the off.

Half time brings LittleMinxDi and Guitarman (whom I hadn't met before - always a pleasure), plus an old friend of mine from work who is trying the Lemon and Ginger bitter (not bad - bit odd, couldn't drink a full pint).

I also ended up having along chat with a really nice guy called Patrick from (wait for it) Lymm (but originally from Ireland!) and his partner Karen, both lovely people and then one of those 'it's a small world' moment happens. Patrick is telling me that his lad sing with the Halle choir and that they were on stage with Elbow at the MEN last night, and I'm thinking 'someone told me they'd been to Elbow last night.....' And then I remembered it was Andy, so I get him over and introductions etcetc and then the bombshell!
They've run out of Thin Ice! So it's a pint of Northern Lights, which was a very acceptable alternative.

Phoenix back on for second spot, more of the same with even more singing, dancing and barracking of Alyerpal by Steve the singer. It was one of those evenings that seems to be over before you've really got into it, and we had to slip out at 12.20 with the band still in full swing to cab share with Steve Blease (lots of Steve's last night!)

It's honestly getting to the point where I'm not sure if I prefer playing in the band or watching the band!

Here's a couple of pics to prove I didn't dream it:

And I've just noticed that Steve was wearing the same T shirt as last time they gigged there!!

Love to all

Watching is much better these days. Playing is quite hardwork at times. I bet people who have never done it think it's piss easy.

If only they knew. :)

Great night, a good crowd, I do love to people watch when a band is on. I especially like to be man handled by the biggest blokes bird while I'm pretending to have a wooden leg so I don't have to get up dance. /sigh

Al, Iain, Stuart, Steve, Di

Thanks for coming and drinking the place dry (again).
Had a cracking night though with the clocks going forwards we actually finished at 01:30 ;-)
Just a bit tired this morning.

Was a hell of a night indeed. Excellent band with a down-to-earth attitude about them. (I spent almost the entire night drooling over that Goldtop Les Paul of theirs... Sumptuous)

Was a pleasure to meet you Al, I especially enjoyed the conversations that followed our brief introduction.

By the end of the night I'd been introduced to many many many people who I think are all great.

All in all a pretty decent night. Cheers all.

Great review. My RELOAD bitches....er sorry .... I meant bandmates went on a pilgrimage a couple of weeks ago to see Phoenix and were mightily impressed. I couldn't make that particular care in the community....er I mean....band outing but we do, as a rule always get out and support other bands on weekends when we're not gigging (seems to be a bit of a theme running through other topics today) though for us it tends to be over Burnley/Pendle/Rossendale way.

Crouched under yer arse with me tongue hanging out. I've been around the cell block enough to figure out the non clique queens!

Your alcohol reviews brought back memories of the Black Dog at Ossy who are busy producing a range of sweet shop flavoured vodkas. The parma violet liquid chalk didn't have me convinced but the winter nip concoction would come in handy for any singist needing to clear their bronchioles before a gig. I suspect Jay (the landlord) is some sort of mutant Willy Wonka. I half expected to see oompa lumpas at work in a grape press and was disappointed to discover he crushes his skittles, pear drops and cola cubes etc by hand in a pestle and mortar. Shame. We could have used the oompa lumpas in a song and dance routine at our gig there.

Good beer review Al! I only had the one pint cos I was driving but the IPA was very nice too. It was good to get out again, meet a few more NWBers and see another great band. A pity I had to leave after the first half, but Sunday morning baby duty plus clocks going forward meant that discretion was the better part of valour.

I've been to see two NWB bands now and haven't been disappointed (in fact, I've gone home from both thinking 'better get practising!'), the OMT was full with a great crowd too. Looks like a cracking place to gig and I can't wait until we get started now.

It was great to see you all, thanks for turning out. Pleasure to meet a few of you for the first time (Steve, Andy, Anthony, Martin). And while I'm at it, I just want to say a big thanks to Al for all the effort he puts in to try and make NWB a 'community'. Al, you're a top bloke!
I take my hat off to Jimmy, John and Luis at the OMT for really investing in this place to make it one hell of a band / music friendly venue. Now we don't have to worry about lugging PA, lights, smoke machines, lasers, even guitar stands! And with 18 plug sockets to choose from, you can't ask for more.
