Randy Rhoades, Brian Tatler and 8 others!!!Are we basing this on technical ability and not songwriting? otherwise the Edge hasn't done bad!! :0)
I'm with Pete Presley bar Slash, Dave Evans and that other guy I've never heard of..so for them I'd insert John McLoughlin, Django Rheindhart and either Pete Metheny or whosoever was in any Beefheart lineup
nuno bettancourt, alex lifeson, randy rhodes, eddie van halen, gary moore, steve rotherey, brian may, alan murphy, steve vai, a.n. other. In no particular order, just my favourite players based on feel, technical ability, originality and versatility.

No Gary Moore?... Not everyone's fave person, and has switched styles a lot, but he's done every one amazingly... Or we could have a local chap that Gary Moore once backed on an album - Gary Boyle. Now he can play a bit! Surely Jeff Healey as well?? Speed, soul, style and amazing spans and bends... Not forgetting Johnny Ramone . . . 8-0
local chaps ..... Gary Potter as well then!
David Howell Evans.....
This is always going to be too personal to be of much merit really. Also different ages will have different views. On a different note I think The Beatles Sgt Peppper's ain't nothing too special say compared with Revolver or Abbey Road. Others would would go fooooking ape over such a stupid statement. But there ya go. It's gonna be down to personal opinion rather than any real facts.
That's why the OP said "Who are your top 10" ...... and not "Who are the best 10 guitarists in the world, living or dead" I'm guessing
Well, that's what you get when you don't read everything. :)
I can recommend the Millenium trilogy ...... excellent read! :0)
in no particular order (and it ain't easy confining it to ten!)......... clapton (pre 1973) hendrix alvin lee gary moore sammy hagar peter green ted nugent ritchie blackmore rory gallagher jimmy page one question....who's "the edge" ???????? ;-P
In no particular order it's............Zakk WyldeSlashHendrixRichie SamboraDave MeniketiStevie Ray VaughnJohn NorumKee MarcelloEddie Van HalenJustin Hawkins
Its always going to be a matter of opinion but in no particular order , these are the Guitarists that make me want to pick up my guitar and why, Gary Moore , his range of styles, his agression, and his phrasing and awesome tone. sadly missed Yngwie Malmsteen, gets a lot of stick , but awesome technique supreme accuracy and open opened the flood gates to Shred in the 80s Paul Gilbert, ,fantastic picking technique , great riffer and awesome sense of humor that comes across in his playing SRV, great feel, fantastic tone, great tunes not much more you can say BrilliantDuane Allman, Skydog was a master Bluesman, one of the greatest slide players ever, died far too young Hendrix , non derivative style, some beautiful tunes like little wing, some killers like Voodoo chile Randy Rhoads , superb phrasing, and a great tune writer as well as one of the first players to make theory "cool" RIPEVH, Tone, originality, fantastic technique great tunes.Michael Schenker , fantastic melodic technique, brilliant songwriter, tormented genius , mega tone.Jason Becker, had he not got sick there would have been no limit to this guys playing ability., he would have changed the face of rock guitar simple as.
A whole host have already been mentioned ...so heres one or two more.... Leslie West ... Staggering! Eric Johnson.. Warren Demartini - Ratt Rik Emmett - Triumph Dunno the guys name but he is the guitarist in Blues Traveller.... frighteningly good! And I have to say that given this man has made a career outta being a guitarist makes him nothing less than a magician ..... step forward Mick Mars!!
1. David Gilmour2. Jimi Hendrix3. Eric Clapton4. Jimmy Page5. Eddie Hazel6. Tony Iommi7. Keith Richards8. Josh Homme9. Slash10. Robert Johnson - coz he deserves to be in there somewhereMy top 10 in my humble opinion. I was toying with putting myself in there but if I'm honest I'm more like number 11 or 12! ;)
Nigel Tufnel
1. Steve Vai2. Django Reinhardt3. Joe Satriani4. John Petrucci5. Nicolo Paganini (Yes, he was a guitarist as well as a violinist)6. Jimi Hendrix (Sorry, can't have a guitar list without him in it)7. Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P 1966 - 2004)8. Gary Moore (R.I.P 1952 - 2011)9. Kaki King10. Jimmy PageJust my personal opinions hare, but there you have it.
Hmmm... Tough one...Here are some of mine, in no particular order:(some for tone and feeling, some for technical ability, and some just cos they rock hard!)Brian MayJeff LoomisSlashMark KnopflerDimebag DarrelZakk WyldeI'll have a think about the rest... I'll get Ste to list his too. Can we do a Top 10 Favourite Vocalist blog as well? :)Gem
1.Ulrich Jon Roth 2.Randy Rhoads 3.Jimi Hendrix 4.Gary Moore 5.Rory Gallagher 6.Stevie Ray Vaughan 7.Ritchie Blackmore 8.Viv Campbell 9.Jimmy Page 10.Eddie Van Halen Do I win anything for getting them right? Graham(rocker)Lee
alvin lee gary moore peter green ritchie blackmore luke fitzharris David Gilmour Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Jimmy Page Steve Hackett, Rick.
it's all a bit too subjective for me. what do you class as great. technique ? ability to write the pieces, ability to create the riffs ? ability to create the perfect appropriate harmonies for the song ? the ability to leave space when it is required ? For me the great innovators have to be Chuck Berry Les Paul Clapton Knopfler Brian May Reinhardt JONNY MARR (so underrated ) Andy Summers McCartney (if we include bass guitar) Me (when I play air guitar) LOL
my biggest influencesbrian maysteve vaijoe satrianipaul gilberthank marvinscott gorham/brian robertsonrichie samborajimi hendrixeddie van halenrandy rhoadsand honourable mentions to steve cropper and lindsay buckingham
but just to mention someone who gets a lot of mentions in polls but never enoughJeff Beck
@Viking - and a very small number afterwards.... How many lists before we got to Clapton! I mean...Many good names above - though I'd throw in Earl Slick, Chuck Berry, Link Wray, Mick Jones, Mick Ronson. - err hang on, is Townsend listed? - Bo, Robert Fripp, err and lots of others. Number 1? For me it'd have to be someone who combined many styles into one that in itself is unique (and underrated - though not here judging by the nominations) Wilko
# Posted by Rob Redfern (Black Rose) - 06/04/2011, 19:32 (GMT) but just to mention someone who gets a lot of mentions in polls but never enough Jeff Beck Ahem! # Posted by Drum Bloke™ - that bloke that... - 06/04/2011, 15:01 (GMT) Jeff Beck - the thinking man's Hank Marvin...
ZAPPA! Dweez and Francesco....
Black Rose - like the Gorham/Robertson addition. Neither are 'the best ever', but probably the best ever team! Like yer thinking!!
there should be more than us two mentioning the man :0)
gorham especially always has a superb note choice and NEVER overplaysRob
Clapton doent seem to have moved on since the Beano album (which was brilliant) , he was overshadowed by Hendrix, Layla was all Duane Allman, toasted by Jeff Beck at the secret policemans ball, now seems content to noodle away on his Strat to Stadiums , respect for his charity work though, Im sure he has loads left in the tank but he doesnt seem that bothered wish hed just rip up a bit !!
@grooverman i guess thats taste for you :-) seriously, you made me think. Wonder whether Hendrix would have become a strat doodler had he lived. After all 27's no age really.Robbie Kreiger?
@grooverman Clapton doent seem to have moved on since the Beano album (which was brilliant) , he was overshadowed by Hendrix, It's all subjective. However, Clapton's understanding of space and minimal guitar playing when required shows progress for me. He's a thinker and understands how to address a song. Now don't all jump on me but I just don't get a lot of Hendrix's guitar playing. I'm sure his technique and innovation are second to none but just doesn't do it for me. Just my opinion really.
its not really a critique of clapton its just hard to see the same player now as the player that did all that bluesbreakers and cool cream stuff, I think Hendrix would have just retired somewhere after the 60s ended , would have been nice to see him at Live aid Robbie Kreiger fantastic player as was Robbie Robertson from the band,
What!!!!No ladies???May I suggest the lovely Lori Linsruth
my main reason for my Hendrix cheerleading is the fact his style is non derivative, rather a Polarization of a lot of techniques that people were already doing, overdrive, feedback fast playing, light gauge strings, the showmanship, the constant need to experiment in the studio with techniques and the Roger meyer effects. and his playing technique, along with people like Les Paul, Wes montgomery and even Chet Atkins were way beyond what most pleyers around at the time could achieve
Slash Zakk Wylde Rory Gallagher Joe Bonamassa Doug Aldrich John Petrucci Randy Rhoads Steve Vai Jimi Hendrix Eddie Van Halen I think it's fairly clear why I use Les Pauls and Marshalls!
1. Hendrix 2. Reinhardt 3. Les Paul 4. SRV 5. Beck 6. Martin Taylor 7. Benson 8. Johnny Marr (good shout Stevo!!) 9. Angus 10. local players - Mike Walker and Adrian Ingram - WORLD CLASS!!
HendrixPete AndersonAlbert LeeMark KnopflerRobert JohnsonBrian SetzerHank MarvinDuane EddyChet AtkinsEddie Perez
@Ramones1234 - we could have a local chap that Gary Moore once backed on an album - Gary Boyle. Now he can play a bit! YES!!! He's playing in Darwen tomorrow night! See my earlier blog! When Gary Moore played at KGH in the 80's, Gary Boyle was a guest and went to see him after the show. Gary Moore was almost in awe of him and they chatted for ages following the gig. Gary Boyle started his career backing Dusty Springfield and has play with an amazing list of people including Bert Jansch (another amazing guitarist who nearly made my top 10). He also knew Jimi Hendrix! Pretty impressive stuff but he doesn't talk (or brag) about it - like a true proffessional and decent bloke.
@ Daz, it took me a LONG time to get my head around Hendrix. I'm still not a fan as such but I can't say enough about his unique style and the rhythm chops he had were simply incredible.
1. Nuno 2. John Squire 3. Slash 4. Brian May 5. John Mayer 6. Ryan Adams 7. Ritchie Blackmoore 8. Stevie Ray Vaughn 9. EVH 10. Me... ooops Angus
1. Hendrix 2. Reinhardt 3. Les Paul 4.Zak Wylde 5. Eric Clapton 6.EVH 7,Gary Moore (see my vidz) 8.Rory G (see my vidz) 9.John Sykes 10. SRV Err why cant i have more ? lol got loads more to !
strange, no-one has mentioned...Prince! Think about it!
I agree Alec , but you have only 10 and he was apprx 17
not seen Joe Perry - been knocking 'em out for a while now, must be half decent!!!v Lennon? Harrison?
Richard Thompson is another and Stanley Jordan - both are too good!
@Cottonhouse Shakers Gary Moore at King George's - was that the 'Live in '85' Tour? If so I was there - but not 'hob knobbing'!!! I recall being told when I was a kid that Gary B knocked around with Hendrix too, and recall thinking how could it be - but it was! Very annoyed I cannot make Darwen tonight to listen to GB, anyone who can SHOULD! and I need to make it next time!
Hmmm! Mine are probably a bit random (barring number 1) but it's more to do with the music I like than anything, I'm not a big fan of shredders, blues or the crazy stuff. They're not really in any order, they're just the ten guitarists I really enjoy. Here goes: 1. Dave Gilmour (huge inspiration on me, unbelievable tone and expression) 2. Johnny Marr (what makes the Smiths better than Morrissey's solo stuff) 3. Richie Blackmore (one of the reasons I got into guitar as a kid) 4. Vini Reilly (three decades of ambient, beautiful music) 5. Adrian Belew (made the Talking Heads even better, truly innovative user of effects technology) 6. Reg Smithies (under-acknowledged guitar genius in the Chameleons, pioneered the two melodies approach to having two guitarists in a band, produced stunningly great riffs) 7. Roger McGuinn (king of the 12 string) 8. Adrian Borland (the genius behind The Sound - best new wave guitarist there was) 9. Phil Manzanera (redefined pop/avant garde with his mates in Roxy Music) 10. Johnny Greenwood (on his day incredible, defines the sound of Radiohead as much as Thom Yorke's voice - playing on OK Computer is astoundingly great)
Steve Lukather Paul Gilbert Ritchie Blackmore Angus Young EVH Steve Vai Nuno Matt Bellamy Mark Tremonti Slash
Nearly forgot Jan Akkerman! ...I think there's more than 10 been suggested though... Has anyone mentioned the fella that plays with the Irish bloke doing fancy dress as a fly - Bonio, I think he is??
@ Dakota At the end of that Prince video...where does his guitar go?? He throws it up....but it doesnt seem to come down....bloody good trick!!!
Thomas McRocklin. Completely original. Very tasteful. Now fulfilling his massive early promise...
If you're being serious Alec (and I think you are but I can never quite tell!), Prince is a great shout. He is a phenomenal player and rarely gets the credit he deserves. I've never seen that clip you posted - wonderful stuff. Far too many clips of his to choose from but I love this one. If I remember correctly he opened the 2006 Brits with this (or certainly played it early on in the night) and blew everyone else away. If you can't be arsed watching the full 12 minute medley (and everyone should certainly try to find the time to), he shifts gear at 2:45, again at 5:10 (into Purple Rain) and finally at 9:18 when ending with the amazing Let's Go Crazy. And just to finish the post on a shallow note (which isn't in my nature but what the hell), he'll have earned extra bloke points by probably smashing in the back doors of all 3 of those foxy backing dancers (plus Sheila E too at a guess)... :-)
Prince is actually a fantastic shout, the man is a genius! Should really be in my top 10 actually - might swap him for Johnny Greenwood (sorry Johnny)!
I'm always half serious :D No, I've got all his albums (erm, didnt actually buy em all) and out of all (or certainly most) of the guitarists mentioned on here, him n hendrix are the two who stand out because they fit their solo's to the meaning of the song.Stuff by Gallagher, SRV, etc etc are ok, but solo's are interchangable...you could take a solo from Bullfrog Blues and stick it into Messing with the Kid for example...just guitar twiddling really, whereas Prince, Hendrix, Brian May? actually get to the root of the song and their solos arent interchangable...if ya see what I'm getting at. No, I've been a Prince fan since I got the 12" of 'I wanna be your lover'...and he can play a wide variety of styles....top musician all round, songwriter, showman, producer..got it all...knocks spots off half the generally accepted top 10...shame he isnt more appreciated over here
PS Still wanna know where that tele finished up...cos it sure didnt come down!
My favourite top ten guitarists are - 1. Chet Atkins2. Brent Mason3. Phil Keaggy4. Brian Setzer5. Big Jim Sullivan6. Larry Carlton7. Albert Lee8. Johnny Hiland9. Popa Chubby10. Nuno Bettencourt Johnny Hiland - watch this guy he's amzing
That Phil Keaggy aint bad is he?? Must admit I wouldnt go and watch that kinda stuff but amazing non the less. PS Is that an oversize Les Paul or is he just really small??
Just read his bio...does finger picking too...and has half a finger missing on his right hand!!
In no order.Lyndsey BuckinghamBilly GibbonsDon FelderAngusAlex SkolnickChuck SchuldinerJon MayerJohn SykesCant think of anyone else
'Alec , Oh reet now i know where yer comin from m8 , but heard this live twice and he does play the lead and excellently at thet to
@Ramones 1234 - Yes it was the 85 tour, I was there too. Moore wore that big black trench coat for the entire gig, he must have shed a stone in weight. And yes Gary Boyle did know Hendrix.
Yeh we went to King georges hall that nigh I remeber driving up a one way street the wrong way to get to the king Georges hall, "One way one way!!!!! - "Im only going one way !!" and we went the apollo the following night when Phil came on at the end , I remember it was filmed but ive never seen any footage my mate got chucked out for storming onto the stage to give Phil a hug
cant believe it took 70 posts for don felder to get a mention ......after finally going to see the eagles , however perfect they were , i did feel a bit short changed coz felder was no longer there. but the glaring omission from this list, and probably the absolutely outstanding guitar player of our time....if this is him taking the piss then how good is he serious ?
oh.......and he is just as good on electric too......
This is one of my favourite player no ones ever heard of Greg Koch hes the Fender demo guy in the states and he releases the occasional CD on Vais favoured nations Label,he is so good he will blow your mind, and he just treats every gig as a laugh very entertaining there loads of stuff on you tube and he has done some brilliant tuitional stuff, I just wish hed get the credit he deserves , hes one of those guys if you try and copy you end up with you head in your hands give him a watch simply stunning
Demoing an amp very funny guy and some stunning throwaway licks
In no particular order :) 1. Tom Morello 2. Erik Mongrain 3. Joe Bonamassa 4. Matt Bellamy 5. Paul Gilbert 6. John Martyn 7. Eric Clapton 8. Carlos Santana 9. John Petrucci 10. Herman Li
Love the Greg Kock stuff. He did a demo of the Fender VG Strat for a Guitarist DVD a couple of years back which was also excellent. Tommy Emmanuel is also very impressive. He was on at Bolton Albert Halls a year or two ago and I didn't bother going - that now looks like a mistake of epic proportions...
