I won't quibble about the above being marvellous but there is more to being a great guitarist than being able to play 100 notes in a bar!! NOT that I am decrying the two mentioned, I agree they were awesome, especially as soloists.
I would offer Steve Howe, John McLaughlin, George Benson (as a guitarist, not as a balladeer!) and John Williams.
Ok, have a go now!

Hi mate , George Benson i do agree , thats why he is/was a top session Guitarist playing for loads of artiestes over the years , cant comment ioh the others so i wont , but i do know what you meen , Bass is my tool of choice coz i love it , but played 6 string myself for many years . never lead , but a competent Rythymn player still so I never ASPIRED to be some lead twiddler in any way or form , also how many notes to the bar doesnt impress me or never has, hence Rory G , i meen the guy ewas a fantastic guitarist without a doubt but i think even he once said i am on the back row when looking at the greats , but to un assumeing for me ,coz i just loved his style of his own type of Unique ( in my eyes ) blues . but fuck me could he play !

as for Gary Moore , wel,l he could do the whole Shaboo ,and has done overf the years , but again , his Feel and love for the guitar far outweighed his ability for me , hope you know what i meen dude

Hi Trig, I was thinking of guitarists in different genres - Steve Howe of YES, John McLaughlin the jazz/fusion man, often played a Gibson double neck, with the Mahavishnu orchestra, John Williams the classical player. I was not knocking Moore and Gallagher, far from it, and yes I agree with you about the feeling in their playing. I play guitar, bass and keyboards in various bands and would be delighted to have the skill of the above named. I have always been too idle to practise over the years to aspire to their heights.
Keep on playing whatever. Never give up. You have to grow old, you don't have to grow out of playing!
