Creating & sending event invites on Facebook

Useful or annoying? The debate

The question is - Are 'event invites' on Facebook useful for making fans aware of an upcoming gig or are they annoying and could it potentially push them away?

There is no doubt that Facebook is an excellent marketing tool with the facility to post status updates right under your fans' noses, the ability to get to know who your fans are and communicate with them on a level like never before. For The Sugar Bullets, our Facebook Page is probably the most direct and important way of keeping our fans informed & up to date and is always nice to see people commenting on our Wall.

However I don't think I've ever sent an 'event invite'. I just don't want to feel like we're bombarding our fans too much (they can see our regular status updates anyway) and also because an event/gig invite in area X may only be relevant to a small percentage of our fan list who are spread all over the NW, therefore further bombardment potentially pissing them off and removing themself from our page as a fan. That is only a presumption of course...but I know it happens because I've 'unliked' pages before after being unindated with irrelevant event invites on my personal Facebook account. I see it from both sides but receiving regular pop-up notifications on my phone just gets annoying, especially when band or venue X is inviting me to their gig miles away.

Having a genuine interest in Marketing, I am always looking for new ways to help promote the band & spread the word and I'm just wondering whether to test the water with a few Facebook event invites over the next few weeks, it's a facility there for being used and there seems to be so many doing it so why shouldn't we be in the mix? The last thing I want to do is piss our fans off though.

If you are a band or venue do you send Facebook event invites and how do your fans respond?

If you are a fan of a band (in general) do you welcome such event notifications?

Or am I just talking bollocks...
Dean

just tend to post gig on wall nowadays, unless its a charity event or birthday etc...then id create an event but only invite relevant people, not every man n his dog or people who just wouldn't come anyway because they either live miles away, or only see bands when they play in their own local ie..RnC mob! lol

I send event invites etc. but it doesn't seem to make any difference. We used to manage prettty well before Facebook and the like. For my money the best tried and tested rules to follow are:

Mark your territory!
Work your territory!
Socialise in person on your territory!
Let word of mouth do the rest!

And if the word is good you may get to expand your territory.

Hi Dean, I think it pisses people off. It pisses me off too.

I've stopped doing them now and just post them on the wall,

Rick.

@SKP Karen - Thats exactly the problem, we don't know which area each person lives in so no way of knowing to include them in an event invite for a certain pub for not. They only way would be to send the invite to everyone for every gig, and that's how people become pissed off.

@CrazyTrain - Mark your territory! Work your territory! Socialise in person on your territory! Let word of mouth do the rest!
I agree 100%...always the best form of progression, word of mouth wins every time.

@Rick - Yep, as I thought. The last thing I want to do is piss off those that come out to watch us. The 'Wall' it is then. Cheers.

Funny really because I was talking to a chap at The Bath at the weekend and told him about our Facebook page, he said he didn't have Facebook and wouldn't know where to start looking us up BUT asked me for a business card.

Just goes to show that people choose to get information in different ways and therefore important for a band to have a number of different resources at hand to suit your fans.

Ta all.

Karen - thats cos SKP are famous in my neck o' woods & you know everyone locally. Unfortunately getting people to a Punk gig in Bury is like trying to get a veggie to eat a mix grill.

I create events for Bad Horsie. I set them to send invites to people who have friended us. I figure most people will do what I do. Either read and respond or simply hide them from my feed. They are a useful tool. I haven't had anyone ask me to stop sending them yet. But I only send them once.

too true Mr.Rob, I know I was messin with rick before but hel have different contacts and areas of venue on each of those pages so is maximising his audience...its all free advertising after all, and if it gets people out supporting live bands and venues then it can only be good!
ps heard on the grapevine the roundhouse has been bought outright by people supporting the live music scene...hopefully a bit more good news, watch that space! :-)

We send invites and receive invites on facebook, some from our NWB bros. However there is a little tick box that says "ignore invites from______" so there's no problem as I see. If you don't want someones invites tick the box.

@ SKP - Karen, I'm not a gambler but during a recent trip to Vegas, I would do $20 max on the roulette but won every time by "spread betting" By the end of the trip I was $850 up !

Definately use event invites Dean mate and as Rob said, why did they 'like' the page in the first place?
Theres a fine line between informing people and pissing them off for sure but its too good a tool not to be used.
Theres 700 odd on my facebook page now and I pretty much know when I create an event where most of them are from so obviously you leave out the ones that are too far away.
I think the most Ive ever had accepting is about 30 with another 20 maybes who are too polite to say no and normally out of all that about 5 of them turn up!!
That 5 might one day turn out to be 5 better than none ;)

I sent invites and texts to those who want to receive them and occassionally some that don't. I always ask people if they feel pestered but the response is generally positive. Last week I had a couple of girls who dropped a hint that they didn't like jazz so I won't send them any more invites to my jazz gigs....simples. I'm good at taking a hint.

I personally want to receive invites because I go out a lot.

We send them and people will respond with "attending" but then not come.

Good idea to send them once but not bombard people with it.

I always advertise FV gigs on my profile page anyway and tend to get more replies to be honest.

Each to their own

Best wishes

It's hard to say, my band use them but unlike a covers band we're not out every Friday and Saturday, we're out once or twice a month if that at the moment and we're trying to play in different towns each time. If we were playing loads and loads of shows back to back (e.g. a tour), I don't think we'd send out an invite for each show, we'd probably just send out one general invite for the whole lot of shows. Being bombarded with event is a bit annoying.

Facebook events are great for targetting a potential audience and keeping friends and fans in the loop. It's also particularly handy if you're playing far away and trying to drum up support. We dragged quite a few people from down south to our London show via the Facebook event (and a few northerners too).

It is of course one tool, word of mouth, nwb (particularly for covers bands), posters in as many places as you can think of putting them, flyers, your website, local press, local radio etc all play a part too. The combination of these you'll use will depend on the magnitude of the show you're playing of course.

depends ... for the same old pub gig we all do week in week out than no point ... just annoying ...
for something special, than yes ...

I'll definitely be posting for POISON WHISKEY at the Hindley Arms on July 23rd, simply because ...

- it will be our first full gig
- it's the only booking we have so far
- it's a great venue
- I'm going away until September after that gig
- we're pretty damm good! (and very humble, LOL)
- we've got faux snakeskin covered drums, and a real snakeskin guitar strap!
- my beard will be fully grown by then
- (well, should I ruin the big surprise? ... no, you'll have to be there to witness for yourselves)
