All we hear is the bad...let's praise the good

After all this is a community right?

Instead of slating venues, naming & shaming and so forth...what about all those venues that do a brilliant job week in week out? Rarely do we hear about them, but good news is no news right? Isn't it about time we praised those that run great live music venues and provide us with hassle-free gigs, on top of running everything else in their pub. All I'm hearing is bad news when there's tenfold out there doing the North West circuit proud.

Yes we've experienced our fair share of cancellations in the past and admittedly we've had to cancel the odd gig over a 3 year period. That's life and as frustrating as it is sometimes you just get on with it. Things change so quickly round here - a venue that gets slated one week is praised of the highest order the next. Shouldn't we make decisions based on our own experiences? Same goes for venue's experiences with bands.

Just take a look back through your gig diaries and think of all those great gigs you played. Put the odd altercation down to experience, move on and just enjoy the good moments with your band.

The problem with us lot is we're all so damn passionnate about the same thing...it's what makes us tick like a family, and how many families do you know that run like clockwork?

We're also human, and so are the people running the venues.

So hats off to the bands & venues alike that are trying to make it work, starting with Dee & Dave's Indian night on Tue 28th June (presume its still a goer?) where we can all have a good ol' bitch together.

Amen brother! We played at Dee & Daves Beach Party on sunday - they honestly could NOT have gone to more effort!! Maximum publicity, palm trees & seagulls in the pub and even the floor carpeted with sand for christsakes!!!!!!! Not the busiest of turnouts but certainly not for the want of trying...

Our list of favourite venues is vast and our list of "bad" venues VERY small! Spread the love people, its what makes the world go around... ;)))

I totally agree that good venues should get praise and reviews, I'm well
up for that and it helps everyone but if I may make one exception; there are some sneaky feckers out there trying to snare bands for free under the guise of 'charity' repeatedly and I think in those cases they should be named and shamed to help each other out.

Back to the good: The Old Market Tavern in Altrincham, cracking venue with a landlord, promoter and staff who are all passionate about live music, have gone to town on in-house P.A and are continually making improvements. Great beer/ales and bar in general, great regulars and an all round brilliant gig.

I've just read an earlier post about a rogues gallery and thought I'd better reiterate that only in exceptional cases do I agree with naming and shaming a venue.

Sorry if I've gone against the nature of the post!

The community spirit is great - but this site is still perceived, like it or not, as cliquey.

Prime example, there's a lad posted further down wanting people to vote for him to be in with a chance of playing High Voltage Festival - 2 responses ffs!!!

@Jez C - a very good point but he has 161 votes and is in 2nd place. How do you know that 155 of them haven't come from this site?

I've no idea how many people off here have voted for him but I would like to quote a fellow NWBer from a while ago.... He said that if you want to be accepted into a community as a valued member then you have to put something in to it first. Sometimes people want only to take......who will give me a gig? who will vote for me? ect.

I voted for him and I dare say that others have too but his blog is not full of pally backslapping because nobody knows him. After several contributions to blogs and after watching a handful of bands on here - he will find that people will be more chatty.

Do cliques actually exist in life? Or is it that you have to make more of an effort in some cases to be accepted. Either way, it is our choice whether we can be bothered not.

You will find that this is the same with any community.

And now I will publically comment on his blog - to be more community spirited. :)

we never ! name & shame ,its our policy ,but if we think there is a danger of any group getting injured or there equipment geting damaged we will let them know in private .
We promote NWB at every gig we play even the little venues that are just starting up or new venues or new landlords that have moved into a past venue weve played & get in touch with us & are looking for bands to play which they often do ,
Fair plays sugar bullets & we think that everyone are trying their best on NWB & its really good blog .

Nice positive blog here......Bit hard to comment on this as mainly do theatre work now but some that leap to mind are....

The Moses Gate @ Farnworth: Great venues with Ray and Mags who have looked after us for ten years now. Would recommend (and have done many times) to all bands to play this.

The King Edwards @ Blackpool: Always had a great night here. Sadly Nina and Tyler have departed to the Isle of Man but new owners good to deal with and commited to keeping it as a live music venue.

The Jolly Tar @ Nantwich: Ex Limelight boss Ray has made us fell very welcome and speaking to people who have played there in the past it looks like a great gig

Looking forward to playing The Railway @ Bromley Cross as well in July as by all acounts it is a great venue.

I do agree that there is a "Clique" here but to be fair to those people they do tend to go and support each others gigs. Nothing wrong with mates doing that and it never bothers me to be honest. I just wish i could go and see more of the band off this site. :-(

Best wishes

John

@CHS - Thankyou for being community spirited lol!

Apparently :0\ (or :-\) means confused ... I was being down with kids!!!!

The last thing I want to do is reopen the whole bloody clique argument; I was hoping I'd worded it such as it didn't (and it appears not to have, phew!!).

On the subject of acceptance; he may well think that his plea for votes was completely ignored and f*** it; won't bother asking again. Some peopole introduce themselves into "communities" - some people stay at the edge and gradually integrate. Maybe intyegration might be a bit easier if you feel like you're being welcomed, not ignored.

Anyway, enough of my bollocks, the suns coming out!

@Jez - Maybe integration might be a bit easier if you feel like you're being welcomed, not ignored.

I will guarantee you that if he starts again and puts up a blog saying "Hello I'm new on here" - he will get a warm welcome from around 10 people......that's 8 times more welcomes than you are likely to get in 90% of Con/WMC clubs in Lancashire - now that is a definition of cliquey! After that, he is on his own and his future contributions will determine how popular he is on here. It will be interesting to see if he reads and contributes to this blog. Even if he doesn't, I still wish him good luck because I enjoyed his song that he asked us to vote for.

@Mutha Humbucker - \\m// ;o))

Let me guess...... a winking person with a double chin wearing a Jamiroquai hat - Does that mean that I've backed a winner at Ascot?????

Sorry guys but I believe the good venues already get plentiful, regular good press...or is this just about kissing arses that are already covered in lipstick...
It's the bad ones who get away with it...cos everyone's too scared to be honest or controversial...
It's a tough world out there with a lot of bad stuff going on, we can't all just stick our heads in the sand and hope the bad people go away.
Jez is right, only 2 people voted on that band, some community...how many we're at the meeting I tried to arrange to address serious matters, less than 10...
Now we have cheap food and all the pigs are out, 40+...probably to discus Eastenders all night eh...
Dave & Dee have earned their excellent reputation and deserve all the plaudits they receive...but this blog suggests we dont give them enough credit...what ???

Think the clique debate is for another blog, this is more about praising venues (and bands) where it's due. Never understood this whole clique thingy anyway, shame on us for making a few mates who share the same interest. Although I do agree with Cottonhouse's blog and the give & take scenario.

What spurred me to write this was a blog further down about having a 'credibility chart' for venues, there's just something that appears ethically wrong about it. I also question the true representativeness of such a 'chart' - people scoring a venue badly for the most trivial of reasons, or a venue scoring highly because your wife's brother is the landlord. It all gets a bit messy in my opinion.

There's plenty of great venues out there run by good people who actually know what they're doing, my point was that 'they' hardly ever get a mention and so just wanted to even things out a touch.

sorry if it went off tangent, that however is the nature of conversation. As I stated, I tried not to drag in the clique argument, hopefully sidestep it - FAIL!!!

In my opinion there are more good/great venues that poor ones in the Northwest. To those venues that want to put bands on. If you do it, do it right and work with bands to ensure a profitable night for both parties, if the night is promoted to the max and aimed at your punter market there is not reason why it should not work. Don't just asume that if you put a band on you'll get punters in

@Roj - another completely accurate statement.

We all know how the industry works. I just wish everyone would get on with it. If you've got problems with a venue, deal with the venue or don't go back. If you've got problems with a band, deal with the band or don't book them again.

I don't subscribe to this "everyone must know everyone elses business" philosophy. Certain bands or venues may not be able to work together, but that doesn't proclude other venues and bands trying.

This community has too many people too keen to use it as an outlet for frustration. It also has a number of people who are too keen to get involved in other peoples affairs. Not a good mix in my experience.

ST take a bow...

"I don't subscribe to this "everyone must know everyone elses business" philosophy. Certain bands or venues may not be able to work together, but that doesn't proclude other venues and bands trying."
-------------------------
Apart from the 'give praise where due' statement, this was the other point I was trying to make...just you explained it better :)

"It also has a number of people who are too keen to get involved in other peoples affairs."
------------------------
...of which some are more interested in other's affairs than their own.
