Need a bass finishing

Anybody know of anybody who can finish a bass body? Want it finishing in clear gloss but i'm being quoted everything from £200 - £250 which I think is a bit steep. Also, anybody got any opinions on whether to finish with Polyurethane, Nitro-cellulose, Polyester or just good old Yacht Varnish?
Cheers,
Mark

I do my own with cans - not as hard you think; but if you want it doing with a quick turn around and dried off/hardened - ring your local auto bodyshop for a quote (sorry if that f**ks off the luthiers!!)

Try Ritchie Thompson at Thompson guitars in Wigan. I aint got the number but its near Grahams Ford and o outdoors. He builds all his own as well as repairing etc.

Hope this is of some assistance

Thanks guys for all the info. got a good few contacts. For your info, Richard at Thompson guitars is no longer doing refinishing work.
Got a great quote from Proshine Artworks, sounds like a lovely bloke too.

Jez C - who gives a flying about f***king off the luthiers??!! I'm trying to explain to them it's a GUITAR body not a freaking CAR body!! Charging £20-£30 an hour to blokes who are earning about £8 an hour! WTF!!
Was thinking of maybe trying it myself with cans but haven't got the confidence to be honest. It's a gorgeous piece of wood and I don't wanna f**k it up with a half arsed attempt.

If you fancy doing it yourself, Steve Robinson sells cans of Nitro Cellulose. I have seen a bass a mate sprayed with these cans and it was amazing.

This guy has just started posting on BassChat.

Looks like he charges between £55-80 depending on what needs doing. He is based in Liverpool AFAIK.

Thanks for that mate, but the link for bass chat is coming up as "missing or broken" and I've already spoken to Steve, and his cans are £15 apiece and he reckons 3 or 4 cans to do the job. Had a quote of £50 so far which is round about my budget.
