lets have another debate, i was speaking about the albums/mp3s thing with friends at a bbq last sun, and the subject is often a hot potato

so

what do you think about mp3s, particularly compared to cds/vinyl

its fair to admit i was brought up in the cd generation mainly, although did my time with cassettes and lp's as a young pup

i personally love my cd collection, i use itunes and ipods, but not as a main thing, i put 3 or 4 albums onto my basic ipod a week to listen to on the commute, and its handy for compilations, parties, gig interludes, ive never really embraced fully the mp3 thing, cos i love actual albums and would much rather have the actual cd bought and sat there than in the digital domain, and theres nothing better than BUYING(whoa now theres a quaint idea nowadays haha) an album by a band you love and i know i will ever lose that

and feel free to discuss the buying music as opposed to downloading for free, i prefer the buying option hands down

but without mp3s thered be no band tracks on our websites, i think theyre great, in context and as an extra medium for music..

this could be a good un!..

I use both like you Rob, but i mainly use mp3's as 'testers' to see if I like a band/album, then buy the actual album as a CD.

I've loved CD's ever since they came out - all the 'havingness' of vinyl without the snap, crackle and pop.

The little booklet you get that often has not only lyrics, but pictures and explanations and thanks to.....

Cd packaging is getting clever now aswell with proper 'gatefold' covers like records had.

Plus, it only costs about 50p more to buy the CD than the download WTF?

Mp3's are sort of the equivalent of cassettes aren't they? Use them for compilations and on the move, but still have the 'real thing' at home....

I love CD's,
I love having something new in my hands for the money I've spent.
I've done the download thing and it has led my to buy a few CD's that I would never have bought.
MP3's are great, but I hope to god that CD's do not vanish.

amen to that and i think bands having a few sample tracks from new albums actively encourages people(especially long standing fans) to actually BUY the album

Rob i am with you on this one.
Yes i download, if i think the album is crap, its binned. If i genuinely like it, ther e is nothing better than having the sleeve and the original cd to hand so i buy it (not download mp3). MP3 is convenient for ipods etc but is compressed garbage. My mp3 player is full of stuff in lossless format which can be hindered by file size but do sound better on a decent system (not a bloody ipod!). Personally, if you are going to spend time listening to something on a decent sound system then buy the original or get it in a lossless format. If not, then mp3s are ok and convenient, for example uploading demo tracks onto a website or a quick blast whilst jogging with an ipod in yer ears. I hate using them for anything else

I'm afraid I go for convenience over quality and buy most of my stuff on mp3

I prefer playing vinyl .... big open sound, but would never dream of buying new on vinyl

can't remember the last CD i bought ....... but come on, i'm going on holiday on say wednesday, i log on to amazon on tuesday night, have a look around, listen to loads of clips, and end up with three new albums on my mp3 player ..... i'll stick 'em into 1 folder and shuffle that for the next two weeks .. brilliant!

I do miss having all the info (sleeve notes etc) to hand tho ...

i loved vinyl. I loved 2nd hand record shops (in fact second hand shops full stop - that was where you bought guitars/amps/pedals from till you could afford decent gear when i was a nipper!!)

I think the move to digital saved the record companies a fortune initially but they shot themselves in the foot in hindsight didn't they?

I'm still on my jollies and i must admit, being able to download some acoustic Stereophonics last night and burn 'em to cd to listen to in the car the car today was top drawer!!!

...still no feelimg like lifting the needle onto a new piece of vinyl though!
