Question - When starting a band...

Does anyone look into what the market is like in the area?

With all the "interesting debates" that have been occurring on here of late I thought I ask this question.

So you're starting a band completely from scratch. You know a bunch of players and you all get along.

Do you:

A: Decide on a set list, rehearse it and then try to get gigs?
B: Look around at the venues in your area, see who is playing what?
C: Check which genres are already covered and go for something else (that's what we did)
D: Check out the fees and decide whether you are prepared to accept them
E: Take the A: road despite the criteria in points B: to C:
F: Something else I have missed...?

What do you do? We could learn things from each other here :o)

DISCLAIMER: I'M ASKING WHAT YOU'D DO. ANY COMMENTS SLAGGING PEOPLE OR THEIR CHOICE OF METHOD WILL BE DELETED SO DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME IF THIS IS YOU.

if you're in it for the dough you'd do research

if its for the enjoyment(most of us) - probably not................ you'd just get started playing what YOU like and see what happens!

We looked at what we all wanted to play, went and watched a load of other bands, had a punch up, I mean discussion about what gets people dancing versus stimulating the musos in the audience then scrapped everything we'd learnt and played what we wanted to the best we could. Some of it is done by others, some isn't. We've also started writing our own stuff which is a whole new game/world of hurt delete as appropriate.

Good Blog Sir !

It's no secret that I would love to be in a "Faces" Tribute band combined with some early Rod Stewart solo stuff. That would really cover ALL the points B to E, but since I'm too busy to form one whilst The 45's are so active, this ain't going to happen just yet and may never happen.

If The 45's were starting all over again (this band evolved and inherited some of the stuff we play today) I think the set list would be very different indeed. More like an album track band rather than a big helping of "Classic Singles" in the set.

Because I watch so many bands, I get to know all the same old, same old stuff and feel really guilty when one of our members enthusiastically puts a song forward only for me to state that it's played to death and we drop it. I'm sure this would be the case if we, like I said, were starting over. ( Point B )

I think the majority of new bands go down the A road to be fair.

Will that do Mick?, lol,

Rick.

I appologise in advance................

I find Wigan market better than Chorley market, mainly for the fish selection, but if it's clothes your after, then well worth a trip to Southport market.

I'll get my coat.....

door slams.............................

To be honest Mick,,

F, Do what the fekk you want, if you like doing it, who gives a flying fcuk,
I would never stoop so low as to watch another band do songs then pinch their idea!!!!!!!!!!
"so baby we'll be.......... la la la"

Play what you want to play, worry about the market later. There'll always be places for you to play no matter what kind of music you do, it's just finding them. Music is supposed to be fun, the day being in a band stops being fun is the day you should jack it in. So play the kind of music you love and don't worry about the rest of the shit,

Cheers Rick,

Everyone else, I'm asking what YOU would do, not what you think everyone should do. Just a thought. ;o)

@ the wes paul band-nail on head-hence my post above-this was back in the fifties, don't forget-same as it's ever been for artists of any kind-a few get rich, the rest just do what they do for the love of it the best way they can?

i can see mick's proposition, though-"do bands have to become business people as well as musicians"? ..................i truly hope not-once commercial considerations take over completely art tends to suffer quite badly, in my experience.

I think once you're established there is a certain amount of business that has to be done and thought about, but you should no way start off worrying about that kind of stuff, just deal with it when it comes.

There cant be many people on here doing B cos most of em are practically playing the same stuff. If there was a G it would be make sure your all on the same bus, musically speaking that is.And H, no egomaniacs.

With Poison Whiskey, we just decided what genre we wanted to play, found a bunch of like minded guys and the setlist sort of grew organically from there (and it's still evolving).

Play what you love - it shows. The market for it will come from that.

IMHO

Kind of what Al says, only the other way round. I'm emphatically a hobbyist/weekend rock star/whatever so finding a bunch of like minded people who agree on a gig a month when we can with no pressure if we can't is the only way it will work for me. Luckily, I've found that at the moment, we all know the score and if someone can't make it then there's no drama. The fact that we all like similar music is a bonus.

@Terry, H is a VERY good point. I won't tolerate egomaniacs in a band I'm in. Oh wait. Does that make Me one? :oO

45s i"ll sing in your faces band im a massive fan ,long player is a great album as well as the classic "every nods as good as a wink " to a blind horse ,also the live import "coast to coast ovetures & beginners "apart fronm ronnie lane not playing & jap bass player out of free instead & the classic "ooh la la " ,"smiler" was a great album seeing as the faces played on it all lol! ,every picture tells a story is as always fantastic but gasoline alley & never a dull moment are just as good, dont get me on the faces ,we played stay with me in our old band before "the stories" ......anyway i digress ..the music comes 1st ,before you can ever think about gigging you have to practice every few days not just once a week you have to be a good band ....THEN 2nd the set list ,it has to be something to catch the audiences attention (mmmmm that sounds good i might just see what the next song is ) 3rd the gigs ,youve just started & theres alot of other great bands who have been there & still there so don"t expect the same cash as they are on as if you actually by chance you can blag a good payed gig you wont play there again as you wont be good enough (stage worthy we"d say) so start (not small ) but just to your own abilities ,dont worry theres lots of pubs/venues out there who who are willing to pay a band who are just starting out as in a show case (for gods sake dont do what we did & play for free beer ),it may not be a lot to begin with but it will be a start & help you to get over those 1st few gig nerves & to get you into a groove & how to understand how to re act to each other on stage ..the more gigs ,the better you get ..every good band has done the same "the beatles" played the shitty clubs in hamburg for very little money before they became "the beatles" & most of the bands on nwb"s have had to do in their own way ...its just a very big learning curve but a very good fun one ...andy !

Market is a dirty word to us. We simply play the covers we enjoy and the original music we enjoy writing. I guess we're still naive and idealistic enough to have a creative outlet as our priority.

If venues wanna pay to hear us, great! :D

When Steelfield was put together; my idea was to do a set slightly different to all the other classic rock/metal bands on here... ie. Riff Raff, Sin after Sin, etc... what was the point in taking on these already established bands. Whilst we covered our favourite artists teh set was designed to give the rock market a listen to some of the "other" tracks by the mainstream artist.. eg. Stranger In A Strange Land by Iron Maiden; Home by Dream Theater; Slainthe Mhathe by Marillion... great songs that our target audience had probably heard and would enjoy that were not common place in our target market... this was beginning to work for us as we broke into the more appropriate venues prior to our demise.

It's good to see that the Marauder lads seem to be continuing the same mindset.
