Professional musicians are being "emotionally blackmailed" into working for free at charitable and fundraising events, a trade union has claimed.

The Musicians' Union will press next month's TUC annual conference to back a move to give people a choice on whether or not they work for free.

A motion to the three-day conference in London will raise the issue.

The trade union will also raise the problem of internships which do not pay a decent rate.

The motion to the conference says it is "unfair for interns, who are often employed full-time, not to be paid the going rate for the work they do, just as it is wrong that many performing artists are expected to work for nothing when they are engaged for charitable and fundraising events".

It states: "It is extremely unfair to put professional musicians into a situation where they are emotionally blackmailed into working for no fee and are asked to give their services to a good cause.

"This is particularly unjust when others associated with the event, such as venue staff, lawyers and caterers, are being paid."

The motion, which appears in the preliminary agenda, argues that there is nothing wrong in asking a worker to donate to a good cause.

However, the union maintains it should be a choice made freely by an individual.

And a motion by the TUC's young members' conference criticises unpaid internships as "exploitative".

Well said Terry, I certainly don't get pressured in to saying yes, just more crap to keep the unions in a job.

I think what the argument from the union is that if the bands are working for free, why can't everyone else? Security and staff could easily donate a few man-hours for nowt. Obviously the caterers have costs to upkeep but I'm sure if they made a charitable donation that might be quite nice - perhaps profits after the costs of the ingredients have been covered?

I'm sure at most events this is the case but it'd be nice to have the transparency wouldn't it?

Well said Terry.

On the point of getting "paid" in this instance:

"This is particularly unjust when others associated with the event, such as venue staff, lawyers and caterers, are being paid."

It isn't outlined whether the musicians in question are working session players (band or not) or whether it is a big "name" who is being asked to donate time and their "name" to the charity. There is a significant difference.

I think one point that also needs raising is that charity gigs with multiple bands on usually pull in more people than the venue might usually have and yet they still keep all the bar money themselves and still dont pay artists or give anything of whats made to the cause. We have done a few gigs where the bar takings have dwarfed the amount the charity themselves have made from the event and thats just wrong.

I dont mind giving my time for free as it is still good publicity and networking and its a good thing to do but its a bit of a smack in the face when you realise the bar in the place has made more across that day than it would usually make in a week!

When I've come across so called charity workers getting 40k wages it really makes my blood boil. These days I have one view point. If I don't know charity inside out then tough. Also I have given a lot of time and expense to some charities and when the shoe has been on the other foot they have done nothing. This has left me feeling sickened to the core. I would urge anyone before giving their time and money to really check out who they are donating to. On an up note, There are a lot of honest charities out there and are worth the effort, but research who you are dealing with first . The results are quite surprising
