Amy Winehouse vs London Riots

Just curious here. Some of the folks who complained about jokes when Amy Winehouse died are now making light of the London riots (as one example)

Who decides or what defines when an event is too serious to be the subject of jokes?

No doubt there will be some wide ranging opinion here. My sense of humour is pretty dark. I could find jokes about most topics funny, but often choose to hold back out of respect for others.

I'm not implying censorship. Just curious.

I guess one of the major differences is that she sold records to feed her habit/s rather than nicking 60" widescreens from Currys.

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot. Charlie Chaplin

For bigger things (like the riots and down to jokes about 9/11 and stuff) I believe its simply a coping mechanism. We need to be able to laugh at this stuff in order to make it less damn scary and be able to move on from it.

It's odd, because in the grand scheme of things, the riots affect all of us. Yet strangely people find jokes about the riots more palatable it would seem.

The loss of a (subjective mode engaged) great artiste is more of a tragedy than the loss of millions of pounds worth of goods and property (and LIVELIHOODS) apparently.

I can't really laugh at the riots as they incredibly depressing. Nor could I laugh about someone aged 27 with the world at their feet killing herself with her vices.

THE FEKKIN’ DIFFERENCE is, I’m laughing at this government’s inability to deal with this situation after throwing their weight about, YET AGAIN.

Me and the missus have had no help whatsoever in our lives from any of the fookers so don’t get me started.

See me after school and I’ll explain !

If as reported the average age of the looters is between 12 and 18, then most of them will be safe from prosecution. Therefore, they could actually be doing the nation a favour if it means that the law is changed.

Like I said on a previous blog - "set a curfew on the streets and anyone who is caught outside after the curfew looses their human rights." Simple and effective. Then again you would need a spine to enforce this.

Can anyone imagine being locked inside a house with children whilst the mayhem goes on outside? This aspect makes this whole affair very unfunny.

I hope they dont enforce a curfew when I'm driving back from the Swinging Arm Birkenhead at midnight on Friday... better than getting Hi jacked and putting my drums on a bonfire...I think?...or me even....No; me before the drums it's the law..CJ.

Looting broke out in Wigan town centre last night. Currys and PC World were spared any damage but Greggs and Hampsons were stripped bare.

Thanks Daz. I've already got me coat on

There have been death(s) Wes..... the lad that was "dealt" with by the Police and I understand another lad last night.

Mark Duggan aged 29 was shot dead by Police - his family protested peacefully.......others have not.

Jolly good, 2 less benefit claimants.

They didn't bother looting Waterstones.....

I think they need to "deal with" a few more of the buggers! It's all kicking off in Manchester tonight.

Everton fans have decided that, in light of events of this week, not to travel to the spurs game on saturday .... there is little point now as all the good stuff has gone..

Ill get the coat....ooh and those trainers.....oh and nanna wants a new toaster.......

I gather that Liverpool has a large 'gang' of vigilantes wandering the streets looking for gangs of youths .... to give them a 'bit of a talking to'.....now in light of the lack of affirmative police action doesnt that make you feel a bit warmer inside..... That will sort out gang culture pretty swiftly i reckon ...."if you are in a large group you are gonna get a good hiding"......
