Anyone been contacted from PartyPOP or other band directories?

Selling profile listings on their website

Lately I'm getting lots of calls & emails from various 'band directories' asking if we're interested in being 'listed' on their website, none more so than PartyPOP....they're persistant I give 'em that!

I've had at least 4 calls from a PartyPOP representative trying to sell me a profile on their website. Working in the media industry I symphasise how difficult it is at the moment to gain new business from advertisers/sponsorships etc., but it is important to know the product and market of your customer.

The chap persisted that PartyPOP could help my band with new venues. He could 'guarantee' that venues including function & wedding organisers would come knocking at our door, that the whole world would open up for a local Punk covers band. Without trying to challenging him, I simply asked what knowledge he or PartyPOP had of the area(s) we gig in...to which he replied "Sorry Sir I'm based in LA, USA I don't know, but for only $20/month we can help you".

HOW CAN YOU HELP US FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD WHEN YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF MY BAND, THE AREAS WE PLAY AND THE TYPE OF GIGS WE PLAY?

"But Sir, don't you want to play more gigs, don't you want to earn more money?"......

I had to laugh.

I too have had calls from PartyPop, but their representive was based over here, same old shite about getting us more work & money etc, it is fair to say I told him I wasn't interested and could find my own work.

Also had bridal magazines asking me to advertise the band so we could get work at weddings etc, they got told the same. I don't know of any young couple getting married that want to book a 60's themed band, these reps should really do there homework before wasting their time ringing up bands etc to try and get hard earned money out of them to advertise in a magazine that will do bugger all for them.

@John
No money was exchanged, just a stern NO THANK YOU. I tried telling the chap politely that we didn't need his services but he insisted we did. I remember at the end of the call he said something along the lines of "you're not even bothered about the free listing you currently have are you?". "Not really no". LOL.

@Lee
I agree that websites/directories/magazines etc. should do their homework, or even ask the right questions whilst on the phone to gather information in order to offer the 'most suitable' package. I can understand why a bridal mag might contact bands - magazines in general are really struggling for advertising revenue so they've had to widen their potential customer base. They could sell a quarter page of space to 4 bands at a low rate of £300/qtr....hey its an extra £1200 in their pot why not!

Get this one - I was contacted (supposedly) by Vodafone t'other day asking if we were interested in business mobile phones WTF. Surely they've got more quality leads on their list than a local pub band haha.

@ The Sugar Bullets

I was joking matey I suspected that you are not the kind of person to fall for this scam ;-)

I have had loads of emails from "promoters" offering their services to FV and when you contact them back they turn out to be webshite based which gets you Sweet FA......

I just ignore them now

Best wishes

Yeah pretty much. Some of them are superb and have been great at getting us a gig....and some.......

We still get some asking if we have New Years Eve free....(rolls eyes)

Lazy and unprofessional in my opinion.

Best wishes
