Filed Under : Hello , Voting

Posted By : Stonecycle | Comments : 43

Just for a bit of fun debate :)

Seein as there's been a few fairly heated blogs over the past couple of weeks how's about a nice simple music one?

Your top / favourite three piece groups :D

For me it's gotta be Hendrix Experience, Cream and Grand Funk Railroad.

Who do you guys like?

Not a "famous" band but does anyone of "a certain age" remember a band called Ostend?
"Local" band playing around Wythenshawe/Altrincham/Stockport areas in the 80s. Lineup was guitarist/lead singer : drums/backing vox : and the famous Adrian Lockhart on 3 keyboards/bass pedals/backing vox. He played bass on a minimoog and when he needed 2 hands on keys he played the (Moog, I think) bass pedals.
Whenever my band (Joules the Band) was not working I always tried to catch them. They successfully played all their own rock stuff in the pubs and clubs they worked (as did Joules eventually) because they were good, catchy and they built up their own fan base - which of course many of you on NWB have done.
As a 3 piece they had a full sound and were unique. They didn't release anything commercially but I have 4 studio tracks they sold on cassettes (!) at gigs. I also recorded them live once on a Tascam 244 portastudio.

Weren't the Foo Fighters a three piece at one point? (Nothing Left to Lose album?)

Quote #Not only the best, but the best live band of all time (and thats official)................'Rush'#

A bold statement.
according to Rolling Stone Magazine it is Bruce Springsteen and the Estreet band.

Ask Men.com says Queen.

Classic Rock magazine says Led Zep.

looked through the polls... no mention of Rush.

Music Radar says Rush, but that is probably boosted by this years gigs.

Give me proof and i'll give em a listen ;)

Some of these bands mentioned use extra musos live, Green Day, Stereophonics so are they a "true" 3 piece?

Rush dont, neither did the police from what I can remember

Very true Keith. I use a loopstation when we need a second guitarist :)

i LOVE three piece bands

biffy clyro
the fratellis
the jam

i cant stick the police but they deserve runner up points for mixing the punk stuff with the reggae type thing
and to be honest if they have the eternal prick sting in their lineup theyd be in mine top three i think

# Posted by The Black Watch - 15/08/2011, 12:30 (GMT)

furthermore i HATE it when three piece bands add more members

i absolutely adored the frats for years when they came out but when i went watching them before the second album came out i died when they had a second guitarist and now biffy have done it as well

theres something about the noise a three peice makes and the spaces in between that noise are what makes it amazing

@Stonecycle, I have been tempted to have a go with one of those for a while now, what if the tempo of the song has changed a bit though (not suggesting for one minute that sometimes the song can speed up...)

Avatar

# Posted by Stonecycle - 15/08/2011, 13:31 (GMT)

@ Keith - tempo changes are the tricky part so I always try and record the loop as late as possible before I use it (ie a solo over chorus rythm I'll record the rythm on the chorus right before it). Used sparingly its great for adding just a little bit of colour here and there. As long as the drummer can hear my guitar clearly its a-ok :D
