Where's my thesaurus....I need more superlatives!
Bad Horsie were one of the first bands from NWB I worked with as ST Photography. They are without doubt some of the most down to earth, incredibly funny, no nonsense, no ego blokes on the North West scene. Ever since the photoshoot, I've been looking out for dates to get to see The Horse and last night I finally got the chance. I grabbed Mrs ST, grabbed my camera and we headed off to Southport for the evening. Both of us dosed up on flu remedies - man flu in my case, which is clearly much, much worse than ordinary flu. But enough about me.
I got a chance to catch up with Mick, Neil, Paul and Don and Mark from Vankwish who was depping as sound engineer for the evening and various other Horse followers as this was something of a "home" gig for various reasons. For those of you that haven't seen Bad Horsie, their set is full of 80s pop tunes played in a rock style with some proper "rock" tunes interspersed.
And so to the performance.......two words - absolutely phenomenal. Neil is an amazing singer (God knows how he hits some of those high notes) and a top, top frontman interacting with the crowd all night. Mick (almost exploding at times) with his new Explorer is an exceptional guitarist. Paul on bass is top drawer and Don on drums is an absolute legend - his "Hammer of the Gods" sticks thundering all night. Absolutely flawless. And for all the technical skill the watch word with these guys is FUN, FUN, FUN!! And you can tell with every song. I don't think I've ever been to see an NWB band and had a big cheesey grin on my boat race all night long!! Mrs ST said the same thing and she is notoriously hard to please (trust me!)
So well done guys. In summary, a top, top bunch of blokes who also happen to be a top, top group of musicians who play some awesome pop tunes in a rock style whilst having fun. These guys without doubt make it into my top 5 bands from NWB. Venues, if you get a chance to book The Horse, you'd be a foal to pass it up.
Credit also to Mark from Vankwish who was obviously having some issues with the PA but still managed to do a top job. The boys sounded awesome and you would never have guessed you were depping for the evening - well done Sir!!
All that remains is for me to steal one of Neil's line.....may The Horse be with you, always!
